Disqualify Nazi Zombies Portable

Post by Lartza »

As is clear from the title, I request Nazi Zombies Portable to be disqualified from the contest.

This is due to the fact that the team working on NZP has still failed to release the source code of the project which is required by GPL. This is outright copyright violation to take someone's code, in this case the Quake engine and use it against the license that id software has set for it, which requires source of the deriative works to be released.

I tried to reach out to NZP team and requested the source, but their answer was locking the thread and telling their engine is 100% own and custom (http://nzportable.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1295(https://www.dropbox.com/s/xrm3kesh3jkkb ... _scrot.png))
The whole project is indeed based on Quake and thus violates GPL terms which one can familiarise with at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html

I have not released their source, nor am part of their team and haven't ever been or will never be with such disrespect for other people's work, GPL and open-source projects.

They have stole someone else work without giving credit or obeying to the license set by the creator, and I hope I could have downloaded the 1.1 source when the link was viral so I could re-release it like Quake license obeys.

PS. Actually if someone has the source, I might be happy to release and host it after packaging it with the GPL license file, but that's really what the developers should do not someone who was kicked from the team or me.

Exactly, but their engine source is kept behind closed-doors and doesn't ship with the GPL, which should not be the case. (QuakeC, the scripting part is hopefully from scratch like they say) Also the game ships with several files related to Quake (quake.rc darkplaces_history.txt) and the maps are in .bsp format, there is no doubt the underlying engine is Quake.

They are using Bakers ProQuake PSP engine, which is a modified Quake engine. They are Under the GPL, and they HAVE to release the engine source if they release a binary. They failed to supply a source for their last update as well. Big mistake.

It doesn't matter how much work they put into the game. They are under GPL still and have failed to release the source; that's going against terms of use.

jastolze wrote:I'm pretty sure that they DON'T have to release anything, dude. I'm a donator over there, and being one doesn't even get you the source. Don't complain. Oh, and especially don't try to ruin what they've worked very hard for. From the way I see it, you can't accept the word NO. On top of that, you don't have all your facts straight. The source code they have written IS in fact their own work, and I'm pretty sure that means they don't have to release it. Just ask other quake-mods like Solitude or left4quake. They won't release it. Why? Well because they wrote the code from scratch. Hope this cleared things up for you Lartza :)
Solitude I can't confirm anything sicne their site is down and no files are available from moddb, but left4quake hasn't been released to the public and thus doesn't have to release the source (afterall, there aren't even any binaries so) If they do they have to release their engine and if not written from scratch, their QuakeC sources.
RUSTII wrote:and im guessing they got PERMISSION to release the game without the source,Because of the work they put into it.
So that gives them to the Right by the GNL to not release the source...Well that is what i got from it..
With permission you dont have to release source..So why dont you take this to the forum the files are hosted at?

but then again, they have More then just a few guy's looking at ALL the works from genesis.
if they find Something,"Houston we have a problem"..But untill then!Enjoy the negative vibes your getting 8-)
For permission, they would have had to BUY a license from id software and also asked from EVERYBODY who had made edits to proquake and whatever proquake is based on(since those edits are probably GPL, but are owned by the respective modders who made the edits), so I doubt that.
