Lets start with MINDCRAFT because it's easy.
To start of with, this game was a massive disappointment.
The gameplay if the first place it faltered, mainly everything was too big, you couldn't really get a feel fr this world you were in because you could only see 4 blocks in front of you face.
You also take up a big portion of the screen.
Now your going to see this comparisons a lot so I suggest you get ready now.
Terraria is the same thing Mindcraft is. A 2D Minecraft. But whereas Mindcraft mad huge design mistakes you will notice Terraria makes wise choices.
The above issuse, everything being to big.
SCREENSHOT HERE
Note how small everything is, now Terraria has a bigger screen advantage, but if Mindcraft had smaller sprites, you could you know. actually see what is around you.

My next issue is the Sprites themselves, I'll put this nicely....
They are an eyesore, the worse I have even seen in any game I have ever played.
There is not a single thing about this that looks even decent. I swear my eyes bleed looking at it.
Yes, that is the nicest this I could say.
The player sprite looks like a MSPaint scribble, the background is blatantly pasted in, the block/tree/water/ect. are stretched or just plain old ugly.
NOW I KNOW WHAT YOUR THINKING
"It was clearly just rushed for the comp"
Well I thought about and all I can say is this.
Looking professional is what is going to give you edge right out of the gate. This game is in it's 7th revision. Looking good should have a moderately high priority, especially for a competition. There is no excuse in my mind.

Now before the hatred starts, you should all know that this review is under the style of "if i didn't mention it, it was fine"
Note that it says fine.
I leave with this, everything that wasn't bad was fine, but there was nothing notable about this.
