"Free" can mean a lot of things. Often you'll find that artists release their work on the web as "freeware". That means you can enjoy it at no cost but the artist still has rights to his own work. This means that if you sell a game with freeware music, the artist can sue you and he will win the case. However it's generally allowed to use others work in a "fair use" fashion, which is basically what you do when you create a game and give it out for free.
"Free" can also mean "public domain" or "copyleft". this is a much stronger statement of freedom. Works in the public domain can be used for any purpose by anyone. Copyleft aka. GNU GPL license etc. is similar but you implicitly agree to give your users the same freedom as you yourself enjoyed from the original sourcecode.
In short there's a bunch of free and permissive licenses out there, but any of them should be fine for media you list here. As long as it's free it is ok for use in the Genesis contest.
If you add something please edit your post to keep this thread tidy. Thanks!
