PS VITA + 3G + TurboSIM = TESTING

Postby cliobrando » Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:13 pm

Hello friends! this is my first post on this community and I hope that it can be useful to somebody that had the same problems (or questions) as me.
Well I bought a US PS Vita (Locked to AT&T) knowing that I couldn't use it with another data provider. Well here (in my country) there's no AT&T so the first thing I did was: remove the SIM card of a 3G Modem, then put it on the PS Vita.. (With the false hope that magically worked)

This picture is with the AT&T SIM card

Well the message with any SIM but AT&T was "Invalid SIM" so I thought: "and.. if I put one of these "turbo sim" things?" (I googled it but didn't find someone that tested it)
So I bought this: hxxp://www.focalprice.com/MX192X/Univer ... _Card.html (the cheapest one that I found and that seems like a good one..)

So I inserted the 3G Modem SIM (with the "turbosim") and it worked, it shows that is registered with the local carrier (ENTEL) with 3G connection:
Image
(If you look closely there's the AT&T data connection activity on the live area)

But there's a catch.. when I tried to open a web page using the browser the first time it told me that I need an "AT&T data access plan or something like that" so I pressed the button "get a plan (I don't remember the exact text)" and it opened the "AT&T data provider" activity (actually is a web page).. well inside there appeared a red text that tells "INVALID SIM" I clicked the link "Privacy policy" (just to test something) and then the X to close the web page, and then appeared a message that says "You need to wait a few minutes to start using the data connection (I don't remember the exact text)" I closed the activity, and went back to the web browser, this time I entered http://www.google.com in the address bar and it started loading the page.. well after like 10 second it showed me the "C4-3619-9" error.

Well, i didn't had another SIM to test, searching on google I found that some data providers don't work with the PS Vita (even the "legal" unlocked ones), so It'll be interesting if someone can test other data providers using the same method.

PD:
- I had to cut a little bit my 3G Sim to use it with the "turbosim" so be warned.
- Sorry for my english (not my native language)
- Thanks to all the people that makes this community so great.

This is a picture of all of the ingredients used:

Hope this help someone and thank you for reading!

Nice find, you kinda tested it for everyone with your same issue.

I hope other provider's sim card will work.... maybe ask some friends if you can run a short test with their sim cards...

The playstation store and everything that need's an internet connection gives the same error code: C4-3619-9
I used a 3G Modem SIM card, and my phone uses a micro sim so I can't test with something more (my friend didn't want to cut his sim card on the name of science).
Something that I forgot to mention was that when the PS Vita is connecting to the 3G network appeared a message on the screen that says: "Select the APN settings" (I'll post a screenshot later) with 2 options: broadband and set later, but doesn't matter what is selected there, you cannot change the APN settings later, maybe that option or menu only shows on factory unlocked 3G PS Vitas.

I also have a 3G US Vita but in Australia.

I shall play around with this (first i need to buy the SIM card adapter) and give any feedback, so give me few weeks.

APN Settings
Use this option when you need to set up an access point name (APN) for your data transfer.
This item may not be displayed on some models or with some SIM cards.

Hope someone finds a SIM Card that works.

Hello friend, i share the 3g internet from my android device with the operator clar to the vita and works perfect!... did you enable the roamming on the vita with the turbo sim? regards from Viña-

*note: i really think maybe entel block the internet access from your sim when you are using in others device... also you need to setup the entel apn{s on the vita

Yes, roaming is enabled, but the main point here is the native 3G connection on the vita (Not tethering). And yes, maybe the carrier blocked the data connection on the vita, so that's why I'm asking if someone else can test the same thing with other carriers/SIM'S.

The thing here isn't about being able to use any Carrier SIM for the 3G, but to be able to configure it. All PS Vita's Worldwide come with a "bundle" of APNs, incase, as SONY said the PS Vita may be unlocked in a future update, so that users could just insert the SIMs and start browsing, without configuring the settings

UK, EU and HK consoles are SIM-unlocked, here, SONY UK recommends but doesn't insist on Vodafone, so I'm using 3, I get a constant 5 bar connection:

What you have to understand is that "Unlock SIMs" trick the devices into thinking that your using a native operator, thus making the PS Vita use a native operator's APNs and network settings (in this case AT&T's settings) for internet.

As far as I know, the PS Vita US 3G version doesn't have a menu which allows the user to change APN, which the UK version does. Here, I insert a 3 SIM Card, choose the APN the PS Vita has preset. I then go into Settings and remove the username field, as this information is incorrect (out-of-date to be correct, Three, the mobile operator, changed these settings recently). Even though "broadband" may be your operator's APN, the username(s) and password(s) may be incorrect! The username and password is no longer required for 3's internet! And the PS Vita has all of the other information required up-to-date!

If these options ARE accessible on the PS Vita 3G US model, then use them, find out the details by phoning your operator (I don't know your operator and I don't even know the country your from, so I can't give you a number  )

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt that ATT PS Vita's will EVER be able to use 3G outside the 50 states!
