what are (were) the benefits coming from downgrading a psp phat from 1.50 to 1.00 firmware with D_A downdater?

The firmware 1.00 has no use in this time.
These days ago, as the 1.50 ofw was needed for homebrew, a 1.00 had been better cause of the no limitations for software.

so basically it was useful because unsigned homebrews could be loaded even better than in 1.50 kernel?

Thats right.
1.50 needs the kxploit "fix", or 1.50 POC, for launching those homebrews which are not "patched" with the kxploit.
