Possible Downgrade Strategy for 6.37

Post by techie99 »

I am new to the PSP scene, so I may be overlooking something...

Out of curiosity I opened the 6.35 OFW with a hex editor. I found the only human-readable information in the file was the version string. So I modified it to 6.38 (something higher than the 6.37 OFW I am running). At that point the PSP did actually think that there was an update available. When the updater runs it says that the update is corrupt. I assume this is because the file stores some form of md5sum inside the archive package.

My question is: Is there a way to repackage 6.35 as 6.3x?

Simple answer: No. Modifying the updater is impossible.

Impossible seems like such a harsh word. Could you explain why?

Truth is, that question has been asked for nearly 10 or so times.
And since the PSP homebrew scene is almost 6 years old and has seen some great minds and they have all had the same ideas so don't think you are the first to think if it ;)
It was possible in the early firmwares but Sony got wind of it and they changed something in the PSAR which AFAIK, cannot be repacked after it has been opened

So that is why JJS said it was impossible

frillybob tried for months on this a few years ago. He eventually learned it wasn't possible. Then he began to code.
I am frillybob's brother. :)

To bad though.
But everything can be hacked. GSM was, and everyone thought it was impossible to crack it just 1 year ago. We'll just have to patiently wait.
