Rediscovered my PSP - best way to update from 5.50 GEN-D2?

Post by riviera99 » Fri Jun 26, 2015 6:50 am

So I've done quite a bit of reading around the net, and gone through a few threads here on wololo, but im strugging to get a definitive answer, hence this post

My PSP slim 2002 (yellow Simpsons edition) was sitting unloved on a shelf for a few years, and i recently dusted it off and re-discovered the joy :D However, some of the more recent games I've tried to run are throwing the dreaded 80020148 error. So I am assuming i need to perform an update to get these games to run

As per the thread title, I'm currently running 5.50 GEN-D2. I did find some websites that said i could just go to Network Update via Settings on the XMB to get updated, or there are some options in the recovery menu ("Use M33 network update" for example). But I'm wary of just jumping in and doing this - one never likes to tinker too much with a system thats working (for the most part). But i'm also quite keen to play these newer games ;)

i did already notice that my version.txt was set to 9.90 - ive since gone and changed that back to 5.50

So i guess the real question is, whats the best/easiest/safest way for me to get this CFW updated? should i just follow the procedure here: http://wololo.net/installing-pro-cfw-on ... 2000-slim/ ? Or is there a better path one should take?

Though i cant be 100% certain (as i first loaded the CFW on this PSP many many years ago) I'm pretty sure this PSP is perma-hacked with a Pandora Battery - not sure if that makes a difference or not...

Thanks in advance for the help!

I am no expert but, I would just follow the instructions on that link. You can always downgrade now so its not a huge deal. Your console is already hacked so its obviously hackable and far as I know thats about all you need to worry about.

Edit- I am basically in the same boat as you, but I have been using mine for a few months now. I have a PSPgo but I used to have a 2000. Ive tried several different versions of firmware and havent noticed any real difference in them. I would just update to 6.60 or 6.61 aand go from there. As far as I know there isnt any difference between those two firmwares. Like I said I am no expert, just happened to be reading the forum at the same time as you.

Sorry, theres a difference between 6.60 and 6.61, you cant log into PSN on the older firmware. Heres a link for the CFW I am using I think its the most recent version viewtopic.php?f=17&t=41249

I would say go with 6.61 ME 2.3 but 6.60 ME 2.3 is fine as well, No real difference but some people say some plugins don't work on 6.61 but I never had a problem.
I would also highly suggest you update to OFW first before installing the CFW to clean up whatever that awful GEN firmware did.

Moving topic to PSP/Custom Firmware.

Update to 6.60 OFW (Best firmware in my opinion) and then to 6.60 ME-2.3 using the OFW Installer.

Can you confirm first though that you can update to 6.60 OFW or if you get an error. If you can update, ignore the rest below.

If I remember correctly though, 5.50 GEN has a spoofed version.txt to 9.90 or 9.99 (can't remember which) that will make updating to 6.60 OFW impossible unless you access the flash 0 and change it back to 5.50 manually or download a 5.50 version.txt and swap it out.

Code: Select all

release:5.50:
build:4047,0,3,1,0:builder@vsh-build6
system:55383@release_550,0x05050010:
vsh:p6544@release_550,v56454@release_550,20091118:
target:1:WorldWide
That is just a version.txt of 6.20 I found on the net and edited to use with 5.50.

Here is also a video guide:
• PS4 1K 2TB OFW • PS3 3K 1TB OFW • PS3 Slim (2103-B) 500GB 4.82 Rebug • PS3 Slim (2003-B) 250GB 4.84 Habib •
• PSV 1K 32GB 3.60 HENkaku • 3x PSP 2K (TA-085v1) 128GB 6.60 ME-2.3 • 1x PSP 2K (TA-085v2) 32GB 6.60 ME-2.3 •

so it was touch and go, but got there in the end

I got the OFW 6.60 update done with no issues, and then since i already had the PROCFW update on my mem stick, i tried that one first. It would install OK, but every time it rebooted, it would go to OFW - after reading the instructiions, i assumed this was expected behaviour.

I then ran Fast Recovery, but it looked like that would never work - i'd get a black screen for a few seconds, then the PSP would power itself off. Upon reboot, again running OFW

So I had a mini-freak out :P (fearing i'd be stuck on OFW forever). Then i took a few breaths, and tried to install ME-2.3. First, it took a while to find the files for ME-2.3 (since zload looks to be down). Then the actual installation took me a couple of attempts, as i was struggling to get the file structure that it expected (i didnt know if i needed OFW version of me_install, or jsut the normal one; if i needed the OFW EBOOT.PBP renamed to 660.PBP, etc etc)

A bit of trial and error later, i got the combo it wanted, and i am now happily running 6.60 ME-2.3 , and the games that werent loading ealier are now running like a dream

Massive thanks to all who replied - this happy gamer is eternally grateful!

You Need to install CIPL_Flasher after you install Pro for permanent cfw
