PS3 OFW 3.15 what can it do?

I have recently obtained a PS3 that still has OFW 3.15. I was like WOW! I have never seen the " install other os " option before, so I was like WOW! again.
I am no stranger to the scene , already have a PS3 that I updated from OFW 3.55 to rogerio 4.something and a PSVITA that has been "hacked" since the UNO kernel exploit. So I was wondering if it is worth it to update (PS3) to the latest CFW or keep it here to install other os. like what other os is there? just Linux distro's? and what can it do then?

There are options for other os on cfw (rebug if I'm not mistaken) so I'd personally install cfw and move on from there!

AFAIK all current cfw/mfw's install over 3.55 and lower. So you should be ALL good installing ROGERO 4.46.1/COBRA7 hybrid from where you currently are! Enjoy!

Update to 3.55 OFW and then update again to whatever CFW you want

3.15 really doesn't offer you anything exceptional other than the offical Sony way to install Linux. Modern CFW allows you to install Linux and it even removes some of the limitations/retrictions Sony imposed on the official other OS option. They really did sandbox it.

I guess it all depends on which features are important to you. Personally I'm a big fan of the CFWs with Cobra mixed in, especially if you have an original backwards compatible PS3. You should be fine to install a trusted CFW straight onto 3.15. (Worked fine for me) But if you are concerned then you could update to 3.55 OFW and then install CFW over top.
