this only works for backwards compatible models, like mine 8-)
What about the backwards compatible models that utilize a SW emu? Would that have a big impact on homebrew performance? I know it sucks for playing pretty much any PS2 disc game I have ever bought lol
SW-only consoles don't let you play PS2 games from disc

Sorry, I should have been more clear. From what I (did) understand some models run ps2 discs differently. It was my understanding that a few earlier models such as my CECHE-01 only use sw emulation for ps2 discs while even earlier models like the CECHA-01 use separate hardware to emulate.

All I know for sure is that Jak and R&C play like **** on my CECHE and play just fine on my CECHA.

ok I get what you're saying and it seems that you are confused with this, allow me to break the confusion:
There is essentially three different ways a PS3 emulates PS2 games: Software, Hardware, and both.
- The very first models (20GB and early 60GB) used full hardware, meaning they had two PS2 chips in them (the EE and the GS).
- Later 60GB and early 80GB models used both software and hardware, software for the EE and hardware for the GS.
- Every other console uses only software, this greatly decreases compatibility and thus Sony removed disc support (only a few select PS2 games that run fine are available for playback on PSN).

People normally call "software compatibility" to the second type of console, but that's incorrect as those console still have PS2 hardware in it, less than original ones, but still have it. Think about it, if those "software compatible" consoles had full software emulation, why would Sony remove it?

be warned though, the ps3 is VERY picky with which homebrews it wants to load. Most emus should work, the problem is finding a version that works well, there are many versions of the same homebrew and some have huge changes between them.
i recommend a site called sksapps.com, they have a huge selection of ps2 homebrews (and a lot of different versions between them)

burned discs won't work with swap magic on the ps3, only USB stuff
