Guide to the Scene. 3.56+ CFW worth it? Scammers? And MORE!

Post by JeoWay » Wed Jun 05, 2013 7:06 pm

NOTE: I AM NOT ENCOURAGING OR DISCOURAGING ANY JAILBREAKING OR MODIFYING. USE HACKS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!

Today I want to shed some light on the subjects of questions I've been asked when making clear statements:

Advantages: Execution of Homebrew Applications. Unsigned Code. Creating Game Backups and playing without the disk. Installing Custom Patches (Keep offline Kids!!!!)

Disadvantages: Running Custom Patches Online may ban you on that specific game. Banned from PSN. Console Banned (requires new console id or new console overall). Internet Connectivity issues (resolved in jeoway 3.55;fix :D )
--------------
Statement: Jailbreaking 3.56+ may potentially be bad for users with no experience that play online (PSN) a lot.
Question: Why would this be bad for users?

Statement: Scammers will earn tons of money via legit developers hard at work to provide a ***free*** jailbreak.
Question: Why would scammers make money from other developers hard work!?

Statement: New users may also break/brick their console in the process.
Question: Why would they brick/break their console during the process of installing a jailbreak?
--------------

New Users: Is it bad for them?

In my mind, it could be potentially harmful to them. Why do I say this? Some users may not know what they are doing whether they are installing a jailbreak on their PS3 Console or if they are playing around with PKGs that specifically say, read the instructions. I can't even tell you how many people have asked me for help on subjects that state to read the instructions and do EXACTLY what the poster/developer stated in doing in the long run for modifying some portion of the console and/or game/homebrew. How many times have you heard someone say they bricked their console because they didn't know what they were doing? Probably a lot, because I know I have. And not just on forums either, I've been emailed plenty of times to know that people NEED to know this information before modifying ANY portion a device. Not only Jailbreaking either. Tons of people who are on versions of PS3 software (normally 4.XX) have purchased a flasher and attempted a downgrade. Have some people broken their consoles physically before? Yes. Why? Most likely they didn't know what to do. YouTube isn't the most reliable source for information either. Copying what someone else has done on YouTube normally what cut it. There is also the Wild Factor that your PlayStation Console may not be compatible (or your base firmware isn't 3.55 or lower, use MinVerChk.pup - please). This also comes with the fact that if you successfully install the jailbreak and homebrew on your playstation, being connected to PSN and running homebrew ***WILL*** get you banned.

Result: Users should do lots of research because in the long-run, it WILL help on future modding. Along with planning out your homebrew strategies (such as DONT play homebrew while connected to the internet/PSN)

Scammers: How much money will they make from our hard work and countless hours?

Scammers. Are they getting money. Are they not getting money? The answer? They normally create a good fake from our hard work and sell it as their own. I bet you have wondered a ton on why these people create such good fake files and phony websites. Haven't we all? Well, the answer is clear. Once a legit jailbreak is out past 3.55 (if ever, not highly likely), then they can easily condor up a good fake (using the same legit files we created) to spoof it as their own. This has been done by many people, such as those who took Sony's standard Shop firmwares (which have shop package installers that don't work/useless) and change the version name to something like "my crazy 4.XX-JB!". This has been a tactic by many people to issue a fake pup and generate money over time by supporters who are blinded by the solid fact that they are 100% fake.
Here is some examples of scammer earnings:

TransamGrafx.com is the website we will use today as our fake. Knowing its a good fake with nearly 30,000 members.
Total amount made and website expenses:

Members: 26,647
Total Member Payments: Around 60% users donated
Donation Amount Per User: At least $10.00
Website Payment Per Year: IP Board about $240.00 per year

Lets do some Calculations:

26,647 x 60% = 15,988 Donating Members
15,988 x $10.00 = $159,880 Total Donation Money (roughly)
$159,880 - $240 = $159,640 Total Stolen Money after Website payment (Roughly)

Honestly, with the website owner technically "stealing" over $100,000 from innocent people, its not right and I hope they throw his @$$ in jail for a long period of time and return money to all paying members. Its only right 8-)

Do you feel confortable knowing tons of innocent gamer's money are being taken by scammers? Of course the person is "giving" the money to them, but that is because the scammer is using spoofing tactics. Spoofing Tactics basically means that the scammer is posting pictures of a modified system update "getting ready to be installed and say corrupted". This is because they show the version name set to something like "4.XX TransamGrafx.com Jailbreak". Or in the features section of the before installing the update editing which may say something like "Added Install Package Files and /App_Home to the XMB Menu under Game. This can ALL be done within the MFW Builder Framework. Nothing new. Nothing Special. Nothing to push the scene really.

Due to the large amount of scammers on various websites (heavily YouTube w/ surveys like no other). To keep fresh in mind with who your dealing with, visit:

--------------

How do users brick their Console? [First Paragraph but specifically for the console bricks]:

As I stated in the first paragraph, anyone who hasn't been able to identify a real developer vs. a fake developer made be installing a bad PS3 Custom Firmware Package. This is caused by the Contents of the Firmware being bloated/corrupted in certain areas whereas the PS3 will not act right. Such as the conclusion of a terribly developed PS3 Homebrew (kind of the same thing in this case). The contents of the PUP may have the required signatures, (or advantage of the ECDSA bug), but the PUP contents may have not been developed properly. This was errors that was happening in Wanikoko's CFW files. Along with the start of Rogero's 4.XX CFW. (Don't worry, the latest builds of Rogero CFW have been said to be stable). I just wanted to get that out of the way.

Now, this post wouldn't be ended properly without having some pictures or videos now would it?

TransamGrafx, you should be ashamed of yourself!
