Can I pop in a hard drive with CFW already installed on it?

Post by ColonelPanic » Wed Nov 28, 2012 8:05 pm

So I was thinking, and this may be a completely stupid idea, but what if someone were to make a hard drive image of their PS3 HDD with a CFW installed, then 'burn' this image to another hard drive and just stick it in a different PS3? Wouldn't that bypass the hassle of downgrading or even make it possible for newer PS3s to have CFW on them?

Spam needs to be controlled on this forums geez. The Firmware of a PS3 is not written on the harddrive but in an internal memory.

The firmware is not stored in the HDD. It's stored in the flash.
So, no this will not work ;)

EDIT: @ AkiTsugi
You beat me to it :lol:

Ps3 you stick the hard drive into would be formated befor you could use the system.... HD imprinted to console id, but everyone else is right too, firmware is in the flash memory.

the ps3 will format the hdd if it fails the system id check.
only core system fw files are stored in the nand or flash of the system's motherboard.
user and extended system related fw files are stored in the hdd.
this is why the system has very limited functionality without the hdd and requires you to use a usb flash drive(with the correct fw update on it)to install a new drive.
and eating thrifty maid noodles because of it......seriously!?! off brand noodles.....ouch i got burned by tech support.....ouch........

A simple answer to that would be NOOO, because cfw is not just installed on the HDD, But in the Nand Or Nor itself. Plus the HDD might not be compatible. If u really want cfw on your ps3 then u must make sure that it is downgrade-able to 3.55. Because as of right now cfw can only be installed on a ps3 that is on or is able to get on th 3.55 ofw. Hope this helps :}

The only way you could do this is if both of your PS3's are on 3.55. You would need GeoHot's JB installed on One HDD for it to work on the other.
