Rare PS2 Classics Coming to PSN

Post by GhettoBeta59 » Tue Oct 04, 2011 1:11 am

Found some news today:
If you purchased a PlayStation 3 within the past couple of years, chances are you don’t have a backwards compatible console, but don’t fret, for Sony is striving to do more than just offer you some of the best PS2 titles via HD collections. That’s right, they’re also brining a number of ”rare classic games” to the PlayStation Store starting tomorrow.

The titles that will be available for purchase tomorrow include God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red. This effort is all part of their new “Only on PlayStation Network” program, which is clearly an attempt by Sony to revitalize their online marketplace in light of the major network outage that lost consumers’ trust several months ago.

If you are a PlayStation Plus member, there are some added incentives for you as well. Subscribers of this premium service will receive 20% off during the launch week for each game that launches through the “Only on PSN” program. Not only that, but if you shell out over $60 through your PSN wallet, you’ll get $10 worth of credit to November purchases, which can be applied to anything available for purchase on the Sony Entertainment Network.

In addition to the PS2 classics, don’t forget that Eufloria, Okabu, inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller are all launching this month, and are also part of the program.
New hope for some type of a PS2 loader, like POPSloader.

"classic" ps2 games that i never heard of. but i gotta say i'm not suprised when they took out backward compatibility, i knew they would do this eventually. there's nothing quite like making people pay for a game twice when software backward compatibility was obviously possible on ps3. that being said, this is interesting but most likely, they won't have too many ps2 classics on there. for the popular ones, they'd rather do an hd upscale which again is kinda paying for a game twice but at least they're 2 or more games on the same disc in that case

The emotion "Engine" is a hardware chip. Restoring it would be a magical feat.

If they put Legaia II Duel Saga on there it might entice me to finally buy a PS3.

(I highly doubt they'll put that game on there and I highly doubt I'd actually buy a PS3 anyway)

Yeah, lol. But the weird thing is is that they aren't PS2 HD remastered or anything, it's in it's original form. Do you think there's some kind of emulator or something for the PS2 classics?

I suppose its possible, but, more likely than not, its a (very mildly) recoded port.
