they dropped ps2 compatibility because of the problems with it
heat , circuit board rework and to drop resources for the system
ps2 full compatibility is a very big resource hog
by dropping it they were able to reduces system strain and smooth small issues with the ps3 hardware
plus after the ps3 was widely sold and had a descent amount of software
there wasn't a need for the ps2 support, as a ps2 is cheaper, and can use the same connecting cables
the emotion drive alone is a $12 chip, with a $2 spot on the mother board,
its also the same emotion drive chip from fat ps2's, requiring steady/stable power regulation, meaning a 4th power mode from the psu(1st power off/standby,2nd ps2 mode, 3rd game mode, 4th other-OS mode/blue-ray movie mode)
ram and chip sets also had to support ps2 functions leading to a few games not being supported on full BC ps3's at all
and they also blocked the back ups swapping trick that was becoming popular at the time,so to those saying it was stupid to drop ps2 disk support, there is a lot more to this then just dropping ps2
and to those complaining about sony using lead free solder in the ps3,this was a legal requirement place into effect (in mid 2005 for US) banning the manufacture of electronics containing lead based products to be produced on such large scale in the US and many other countries, without a proper full investigation of long term use of lead free solder and other materials in electronics(if you have a apple G5 tower you know this issue is a very painful hit to the wallet), with many leading companies having little to no testing or knowledge of lead free metals in electronic equipment, as lead was a standard to prevent instability and furring(little hairs that grow on the exposed metal components in electronics) of the conection points.
(replacing lead-free solder with lead solder is not illegal in the US and many other countries, it just can not be sold as new with this modification though, also it must be brought to the buyer's attention that said unit has lead based metals in it before being sold, or legal action can be taken against the seller for intentionally introducing a known poisonous material into the buyers home without the buyers knowledge)

sony was already pushing for the ps4 next year anyway...
and eating thrifty maid noodles because of it......seriously!?! off brand noodles.....ouch i got burned by tech support.....ouch........
