All the more reason to spread it around! First they cancel now they stop a fan translation?!?!? They deserve to have the whole iso distributed not just the patch!

And you need to learn how copyright works, If they become aware of copyright infringement such as this translation they must take it down or they lose the rights to it. Yes I know that doesn't make sense but its a use it or lose it type thing. Now this applies to the US at least and I make no claim as to knowing how Japan does its copyright laws.

You should be happy they waited till after it was done so people could get it, They could have stopped it right at the beginning and ending it all.

FF type-0 doesn't interest me, but this comes off as a bit dirty and underhanded. I know they have to enforce their copyrights, but that's a harsh way to do it. Most translators are fans of the product and probably would have stopped if the company would have asked nicely. My theory, they probably noticed the game was building up a following and they decided they wanted a piece of that action, not wanting a free translation patch cutting into their potential profits. It's just my own theory based on how I've seen big companies act in the past.

It comes off as really slimy to me, but I'm just some nut probably reading too much into it. I just hope this doesn't become a thing. I'd hate to see fans of various games get into trouble simply cause they wanted to translate a game for their region for others to enjoy.

OK I'll bite, How exactly should they have done this? All I see is a cease and desist which TBH is asking nicely. "Slimy" would have been them shutting the site down and going after all sites and people that have distributed it. Like SCE did back in the PS3 era.

On that page he mentioned threats and false accusations. He doesn't go into detail, but I think if Squenix wanted to have it taken down without causing bad PR, they should have simply asked for them to take it down. If they refused, then legal measures should have been taken.

Honestly until I see the letter I am going to go with sky just got mad at sqeenxz for even sending the letter, I have seen a few C&D's and lets just say the lawyers are not the best at making things friendly. Blame the lawyers not the devs.

I rarely blame devs, but there's more to Squenix than devs. A big corporation like Square Enix is more than a bunch of developers. When it comes down to this kind of stuff, it's generally out of touch shareholders and others in power in the company making the decisions, with the poor (poor as in I feel sorry for them) PR department to clean up the mess. In the end, it doesn't matter what I think, I'm just some guy on the internet blowing off some steam at a company that will never notice me.
