PrBoom in Retroarch is a very nice Doom version with Music!

Post by rsn8887 »

I just realized that PrBoom in Retroarch works perfectly on the Vita, even with music. But it requires good mp3 versions of the music files as separate files.

Since some music files have the same names for doom2.wad and tnt.wad, I chose to make folders to store the files for Doom, Doom2 and TNT separately.

Here are the steps:

- make folders somewhere, one for each version of Doom:
ux0:/emuroms/prboom/doom
ux0:/emuroms/prboom/doom2
ux0:/emuroms/prboom/TNT

- Copy doom.wad into ux0:emuroms/prboom/doom/
- Copy doom2.wad into ux0:emuroms/prboom/doom2/
- Copy TNT.wad into ux0:/emuroms/prboom/TNT/
- into each of the three folders, copy prboom.wad from https://github.com/libretro/libretro-pr ... prboom.wad
- into each folder, copy the .mp3 versions of all the music tracks (unzipped) for that version of doom. The music files can be downloaded from http://sc55.duke4.net/games.php#doom . Before copying to the Vita, all .mp3 files have to be unzipped, and filenames have to be renamed so that the leading "d_" is removed from their filenames, e.g. "d_victor.mp3" should be renamed to "victor.mp3"

That's it! Now start Retroarch, select load content, browse to your doom.wad, doom2.wad, or TNT.wad, select it, and play Doom with music!

Does it quit? If not, then it's legit... Too legit.

No Brutal Doom needs a more sophisticated engine such as ZDoom, which depends on fmod, and neither have been ported.

PrBoom aims for an authentic “original” Doom experience, without many modern features. There’s no look up/look down, etc.

I just tried it, it really is awesome.

I had a few problems, the prboom.wad didn't work for me, it caused Retroarch to crash. I fixed it by downloading the shareware version of doom through retroarch.

In the retroarch xmb go all the way to the left, and go down to "Online Updater". Go to "Content Downloader", and select Doom. You will then find your working prboom.wad in ux0:/data/retroarch/downloads/Doom/

Thanks OP! I wouldn't have known about this otherwise. I'm working on a better controller configuration.

Thanks! The prboom.wad is just some helper file similar to a bios file. You just put it there but never load it directly.

It is definitely worth obtaining the official full versions of doom.wad and doom2.wad they really are awesome games with great level design, and the full version have many more levels than the shareware version.

I have a alternate music pack for Doom I and II
Here is an example of what's included.

I already converted the ogg files to mp3 and properly renamed everything!

Doom I Metal pack
Doom II Metal pack
