Rules updated regarding links/signature/advertising

We put in place a very friendly rule about signatures. In the other forums I've been moderating, nobody ever reached the limit of 250px, it was more a symbol than anything else. However it seems that a minority of people are pushing this rule to the limit, with signatures so big they make reading the threads very difficult.

We have also seen people using their signatures to "spit" ads for their website in the face of everyone.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think promoting your website in a relevant way is a very good thing. If you own a website that has content which can help a given situation in a given topic, this is fine. If you have a general website that you want to discretely promote in your signature, this is fine too.

Unfortunately people have been abusing our friendly rules about advertising and signatures, so we have to strengthen them.

Please try to find a good balance between advertising and spam.

Here are the two new rules, applicable now. I also of course updated the main rules

- your signature (if any) should be less than 150 pixels in height (text included). Moderators reserve the right to change your signature if it doesn't follow this rule.
- Discrete and relevant links to other websites are allowed. Blatant advertising is not allowed.

Note that the new rule about advertising is intentionally vague. Mods reserve the right to remove links that are inappropriate, for whatever reason.

Those signatures are fine. Don't worry, you won't get banned (or at least not directly) if your signature is too big. However you will receive a warning if you violate the rules.

We give you guys one week to adapt your signature if needed. If you want to check the height of your signature, just take a print-screen, paste it in paint (or your favorite image editing program) and select your signature (text included). The dimensions will show up in the corner. The height if the second number.

I would personally send a PM to the concerned users and ask them to change their sig before any warning.
