Half-Byte Loader (HBL) is an open source Homebrew Loader for the Sony PSP. It allows to play fan-made games on any PSP up to firmware 6.37 included. HBL allows to run emulators for the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Sega Megadrive, NES, Super NES… and many other applications.
Important, if you have firmware 6.60, please check HBL for 6.60 Instead.

How to use
Unzip the archive at the root of your psp and run from th XMB. Check the README file of the archive for more info 🙂

HBL is a work in progress and sometimes it might fail to load your favorite homebrew. However we believe it is harmless for your PSP and I personally test my work on several PSPs before releasing it. We are also confident that this program cannot “brick” your psp and it will not void your Sony Warranty.

I’m confused I have a psp 3003 version 6.20 what do ido I don’t kno what the root is or where it located I dnt know what a XMB is can you please please please help me ASAP
Ok so i have done everything correctly with placing the files on my mem stick on my psp 3000 with fw6.37 and when i try to load the hbl xmb ver it goes to a black screen then poof!! the unit shuts off??!?!?!???
never mind… redid the copy to mem stick… reset unit and poof!!! it works!!!!!!
how i update to ofw 6.20? psp\game\update? but i can´t.
u need the update for psp_go? or try to rename the floder with capital letters.

Ok so I have a 1000. I downloaded the latest build, and now I put hbl in the root of my memory stick. My problem is that when I launch hbl from the xmb, it simply stays at a black screen. Any help appreciated
root is the memory stick (main floder) =ms0:/ if u use go it is called ef0:/
place the h.bin file, the hbl floder and PSP floder in the root. ready

I have a psp3000 now and b4 i bought it is v.6.31pro… and i careless to update it to v.6.37… so now i cant load any .iso game… have any idea on it? pls… help…
So, If I want to install custom firmware, I have to run it through this program?

Hey, make sure the HBL that is in the root of the zip file goes in the root of your psp…there should be hbl folder, readme.txt, and h.bin files. Then, the HBL folder inside PSP>GAME in the zip file goes into PSP>GAME on your PSP. Then it should run.
hmmm…I did the same as you instructed, yet my screen still goes black after selecting the HBL EBOOT on my psp…
i was having the same prob thn update to 6.31 thn download the minni so kakura i dont knw the corret speeling then get 6.31 pro then downgrade to 6.20 tn hen

use hbl is really easy.
Copy all files outof Wololo´s download to a free memory stick:
– hbl
– PSP
– h.bin
start hbl the same way as a SonyDemo-game
or try to find a easy installer for example 6.XX Installer v1.4
Okay Since people obviously cannot figure this out:
1. Open the Computer or My Computer (Depending on the Windows OS).
2.Next Plug your PSP (with the data cable) OR plug it’s memory stick into a supported memory Card Reader
3. Load the drive that has the PSP or it’s memory stick in the drive. When the Drive Letter (M: in my case) Opens, THAT IS THE ROOT MENU!!

Will this work on my PSP 2004, i don´t really know much about these things, i´m a real newbie. And one more question, wich probably is a stupid question but still, is PSP 200 and PSP 2004 the same? I think mine is a 2004 because it says under the start, selesct… buttons some numbers and in the end PSP-2004, so is it a 2004?

Okay “stupid”….ahh, just joking. The ROOT of memeory stick is the same place you se PSP,MUSIC, PICTURE…..folders. Just drop anything that belongs in “Root” location into that area and drop anywhere. Just FORGET about theose folders called “”ROOT….they are NOTHING for us.

HEy…i´m new here, just want to say thanks for your awsome work. Stupiditly (because i was curious actually) update my PSP to 6.38, i had 6.10 and my HBL stop working, now i´ve tried HBL rev113 signed official and works with the only difference that now has a black background…..i wanted to tell you my experience just in case is helpfull for someone else….see you.

only for ppl that get black screen put the hbl folder thats not the game “HBL” outside the mp_Root where u see psp, Mp.root etc. Took me a while to figure that out
for ppl who get a black screen put the hbl outside the Mp-Root not in. Put the hbl where u see psp, Mp_Root,etc on its own. Put the HBL folder in game folder still. Took me a while to figure that out kept getting wrong advice maybe puttin it in Mp_Root works for some ppl
after all that configuration ,,,when i started the HBL!! it did start and retuned back to the XMB but no homebrew from this website is working!! hoe do i confirm that the HBL has installed correctly?

There’s not much “configuration” going on, really, you just have to unzip the archive on your memory stick, shouldn’t be too hard.
If HBL returns to your XMB it means something wrong happened. Instead it should show you a menu.
HBL does *not* stay in ram, it’s not like a Hen or things like that. You need to be running within HBL’s menu in order to run homebrews.
actually , i hv done exactly like what u tell us to do , n i hv tried run it for several times but the screen still goes black n shut off after few minutes , well i hope that not gonna break my psp, i use PSP 3001 v/ 6.35 , do u hv any idea how to get it works ?
It is worth noting that the version of HBL for OFW 6.37 works fine for OFW 6.38 too.
hi i have a modded psp and it modded perfectly but the only thang is it wont show up the games that i downloaded and wont play them, nothing i just dont get it, i have a psp 1001 and im using 6.20 but im not useing the patopon and exploit save game, im useing the TN HomeBrew Enabler, the faster hack, i aint no pro but i learnd some stuff, if anyone dont mind teaching me or helping me out wid this problem i would greatly appreciate it thanx
