Polls/Surveys

Postby Nazar-WTH-PCgamer » Sun Feb 20, 2011 9:28 pm

I searched for a topic about votes or pools and found none... except for "mana poll" results ;) All kiddings aside, it could be a neet way to have people's opinion on which main aspect of the game they would like to see the most improvement next... interface/themes/cards/in-game features/quests/etc. Then for the leading category or for each one of them, a series of items suggested by developpers and members that could be part of that next improvement. I would like some feedback on that thought.

As I wrote down in another discussion thread (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2715), at the moment, I'm not aware if such a feature is available on phpBB Group forum. But in fact it doesn't matter because iff it isn't supported by this forum, I will try to find another site that allows us to use its survey/poll feature and to put links here. We can always use an outside resource to provide this feature if most people think it could improve the way ideas are discussed.

For my part, I truly think it could prove to be helpful in the long run. Some people could say that we don't need survey and we can do all this already through a discussion topic. So why should we use pools and surveys? Because of their main advantages: they are quick, simple and automated!

QUICK & SIMPLE:
With pools, people could see on the same page all WTG offers to focus on next. If they feel like it, users could also add their own suggestions to the list. WTG could see what users think is best or want most by reading a single survey rather than 100+ posts. Also WTG can reach more people if the voting is not restricted to registered members. That way, ANYONE CAN vote and almost EVERYONE WILL because it won't feel like a burden to people...
- they don't have to create an account if they only visit;
- they don't need to register if they already are members but not currently logged in;
- they won't have to read all the previous posts to see if one is matching the suggestion they had in mind;
- they won't need to write a detailed post;
- etc.
All users would need to do is "click" one of the choices on the list or write their own suggestion at the bottom! The only downside to an unregistered poll is the possibility that one or more individuals vote several times to influence/corrupt the vote but for that part we can rely on the honesty and ethics of the people coming here. If I can find a webpool with an IP address check it will prevent that fraud without the need to register so we could win on both sides!

AUTOMATIC:
With the automatical calculations, statistics and graphics they can show the evolution of the votes for each proposal during the survey and the final results at the end. No need for WTG to read and compile 100+ posts to see what users prefered.

Thanks in advance for all your comments and thoughts on this subject. Cheers!

With a simple google search, I found two free web poll/survey tools.

http://www.micropoll.com/
http://www.webpoll.org/ (by StatPac)

The second one (by StatPac), if you read the PDF manual on page 3, offers all the features to restrict or not the ID and IP and it treats them seperatly so that one does not prevent the other and so on.

There might even be some better ones out there and maybe some of you guys can share if you had a good experience and you recommand using a specific one.

What's wrong with the poll system in phpBB? I think it's just a matter of activating it...

Also, regarding unregistered users allowed to vote... meh, I don't really know. I'm not sure I value the opinion of a person who is so distant from the community they won't even register on the forums to give their opinion...

I know registering to forums is a pain, but still...

By the way, it's spelled "poll", not "pool".

If your main concern is the possibility for registered users to created polls, I think it's a fair request and I can probably activate it as soon as today, just say "yes" and I'll do it :)

As far as installing additional crap on my servers, believe it or not, I'm not willing to do it (each additional piece of software on my server ads maintenance time, and I already don't have enough of that for now, unfortunately)

hmmm, turns out registered users should be able to create polls already... did you actually try?

Edit: yeah, I tested your permissions and you are allowed to create polls.
When you create a new topic, it's the "polls" tab at the bottom of the page, in the section under the "preview" and "submit" buttons

Wow! Thanks and please forgive me in advance for all my spelling mistakes. English ain't my first language. Indeed, the php FAQ mentions "How do I create a poll" when I search for "poll" spelled properly ;) and I hadn't notice the poll option under the new topic yet. I'll give it a shot this week.

Thanks to you, I corrected all the pool(s) into poll(s) in my previous posts. That was so many occurences that I should remember the difference from now on.
