A good friend of mine contacted me recently because his PS3 got banned from Sony’s PSN. He owns a PS3 for the sole purpose of playing Videos and music, and mostly runs Showtime (a media player Homebrew, far better than the official PS3 video player) and Netflix. If the default video player on the PS3 was decent, he wouldn’t have to run a CFW at all. As a matter of fact, he never played a single game on his PS3. Nevertheless, he woke up one day seeing that he couldn’t connect to the PSN anymore.

Like I requested in my previous article, commenter vFX suggested I write about the Source engine. So here it is, and as always, if you’re expecting an in depth review of every bit of history, feature, spec. Then you’ve come to the wrong place. Sorry!

In a previous article, I claimed that modern consoles can probably only be hacked by companies, or more generally by people who can invest a relevant amount of money into R&D, then expect a significant return on investment.

Over the past year, we’ve seen a continuous stream of exploits releases (almost one per month since April last year), and even 2 kernel (psp) exploits. But it seems the trend has stopped, with no new major announcement on the horizon. TomTomDu80 has a psp user mode exploit, which he ported to VHBL, but most likely no plan to release it for 2.05 (or that would have happened already).

With all the rage about CFWs and leaked keys, the Ps3 system has been opened widely. But long before this, other hacks were found that allowed homebrew apps to be ran, amongst other things. While most of these hacks are patched, some are still accessible, even on the latest OFW.
