Emulation News: RetroArch 1.8.9 released with custom bubbles on the Vita + improved AI service & Yuzu gets 32-bit Switch game support with New Super Mario Bros. U & Mario Kart 8 Deluxe running well!
In the last few days, the spotlight was on the PlayStation Vita as Graphene has managed to allow its 4th CPU core to be used in games & homebrew rather than be reserved to system processes. However, other scenes haven’t been dormant and in this article, we’ll be looking at the release of RetroArch 1.8.9 and the long-awaited 32-bit support in Yuzu!
RetroArch 1.8.9 lands with custom Vita bubble support, improved AI service, various Core Downloader Improvements and more!
RetroArch requires little introduction with it being an all-in-one emulation solution allowing you to use many emulators/game engines called cores that’s available on a whole slew of platforms including Windows/Mac/Linux and popular hacked consoles like the Switch, Vita and 3DS together with mobile platforms.
While RA 1.8.9 may seem like a trivial update, it brings various little tweaks and important fixes which will surely benefit a good deal of users!
Now, RetroArch 1.8.9 has been released which is an incremental update bringing along many quality-of-life updates together with some feature updates with the main stuff being:
- An improved AI service allowing for custom accessibility service support.
- This allowed for the creation of a custom service which aims to make Final Fantasy 1 playable by users who lack sight by giving a description of what’s on-screen in plain English while also giving information on how far one can move in a certain direction
- The ‘Core Updater’ has been renamed to ‘Core Downloader’ and it includes various quality-of-life improvements including a # next to installed cores, the ability to hide Experimental Cores while also allowing for easy core deletion
- According to the full change log, the PlayStation Vita now has support for custom bubbles although no information has been given on how to use them. The Vita’s port is also making use of a new version of vitaGL
- The commit adding support for custom bubbles can be found here with Rinnegatamante and frangar being the ones who worked on it
- Improvements to the Vulkan WSI which should reduce stalling on integrated GPUs such as Intel’s HD graphics found in many desktops and laptops
- Auto Save States have been added which ensure that save states are properly flushed to disk when exiting RetroArch which eliminates broken save states
- Other stuff like performance improvements to the Ozone menu driver, an initial Persian/Hebrew/Asturian translation, enabling Game Mode on the XBOX & UWP port among many others

Yuzu gets initial 32-bit game support with New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe running well!
Ever since last March, work has been on-going to add 32-bit game support to the Yuzu emulator as some Wii U game ports do not use 64-bit binaries.

While there aren’t many 32-bit games for the Switch, some pretty popular titles such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Monster Hunter XX and Captain Toad are 32-bit so omitting support for the ARM32 architecture isn’t an option for emulators and now, Yuzu has followed in Ryujinx’s steps and implemented initial support for it!
According to a comment on Reddit, 32-bit Switch game support was introduced in the recently-released Yuzu Early Access Build 632 which is only available to Patreon supporters. Then, earlier today, videos started making their rounds on YouTube showing New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, a 32-bit title ported from the Wii U, running on the Yuzu emulator with pretty good results confirming that 32-bit support is operational in its current state with more recent videos also showing Mario Kart 8 running well.
As usual, it’s important to state that a mid-high end PC is required to get a playable experience while emulating Switch games in Yuzu with some games being more demanding than others! To use 32-bit applications right now, it is required to use Yuzu’s Early Access Builds which can be accessed by donating $5/month via Patreon.

Other than these releases, the 3DS also got some love with the release of 3DSEins 0.2.0 which is a clone of the UNO cardgame together with a Nintendo DS version.
