Unfortunately, the PSVita didn’t get a native GTA port so we’re stuck either playing the PSP ports of GTA VCS/LCS or Remote Play. However, that may one day change with the recent porting-over of UnitySA to the PSVita!

 

What is UnitySA?

As its name suggests, UnitySA is a port/remake of GTA: San Andreas in Unity. Obviously, it doesn’t use original code since GTA:SA isn’t open-source and as a result, it doesn’t aim to be a complete re-implementation of the game. This project has been going on for more than a few years but it’s nowhere near finished although it has already passed some serious milestones such as:

• Rendering Maps
• Providing functional weapons
• Allowing you to drive cars
• Splash screens and a basic HUD system among others

At the present, the people behind the project are Metapyzkz and in0finite with some commits from other members. As great as this sounds we have to hope that Rockstar Games doesn’t stop these people from furthering their work as community-based game remakes have, in the past, created some legal trouble as was the case with AM2R.

What about the PSVita port?

The PSVita port is still in early stages and caghandemir is apparently the main person behind the porting effort. Currently, the port is at the following stage with the following deficiencies:

• A low framerate which hovers around the 10FPS mark when the PSVita isn’t overclocked (i.e 333MHz CPU/111MHz GPU)
  • Framerates in the 20FPS range have been reported by caghandemir when the PSVita is overclocked. However, higher FPS may be achieved by lowering Unity settings
• Input doesn’t work too well as only the left analogue stick and touchscreen are supported as of right now
• Pretty long loading times
  

  The PSVita port doesn’t run very well especially without overclocking but the sheer fact that you can run UnitySA is just awesome!

• The remake itself is still unfinished so don’t expect to get the full GTA:SA anytime soon on your device

To see the port in action, simply check out the YouTube video below in which a channel called “Call Me Jay” shows off UnitySA running on the Vita. Unfortunately, there is no VPK or executable code released just yet BUT if you know how to mess around with Unity, you can always grab the source code and try running it yourself.

Conclusion

Remember that UnitySA itself still isn’t finished yet so don’t get your hopes up high yet. However, this port shows that there may be hope in the future for this native remake to run decently on the PSVita so that you can at least roam San Andreas and wreak some havoc!
