Release: Nintendo Switch Homebrew Launcher for firmware 3.0.0
As promised, with only a few days of delay, developer Plutoo has released a Homebrew Launcher for the Nintendo Switch.
Who can use the Switch Homebrew Launcher?
The Homebrew Launcher is currently only compatible with firmware 3.0.0. If you are on a firmware lower than 3.0.0, you’ll want to update your console to firmware 3.0.0. The recommended way to do this is to get a copy of Pokken Tournament DX, which ships with firmware 3.0.0 (a few reports state that some recent copies of the game ship with firmware 3.0.1, you don’t want to upgrade to 3.0.1 so be careful).
Arguably, if you’re on firmware 1.0.0, some hackers have been recommending to stay there and not upgrade, even to 3.0.0 which seems to be the golden firmware right now. It is unclear however if this homebrew launcher will ever be ported to lower firmwares, let alone 1.0.0.
Last but not least, if you’re on firmware 3.0.1 or above, you’ll have to wait. There’s some good hope for you though, with the recent announces of some unpatchable Tegra Exploits, and SciresM’s 4.1.0 Trustzune exploit.
Switch Homebrew Launcher. How to install and Run
The Homebrew Launcher comes with an extensive FAQ, we’ll reproduce below the part on how to install and run.
- Download latest nx-hbmenu.
- Put the hbmenu.nro on the root of your sdcard.
- Insert the sdcard into the device.
- Set your Switch DNS server to 104.236.106.125, and perform a connection test.
- Click “Install”. If you see 2000-1337 on your screen it means installation succeeded.
- Restart the device, and perform a new connection test.
- Click “Run”. The exploit is finished when there’s a popup asking you to exit.
- Go to the home menu and click the Album icon.
What can I do with the Homebrew Launcher Today?
As of now, there’s not that many homebrews for the Nintendo Switch. The Switchbrew wiki has a page of homebrews that is desperately empty for now. However we know for a fact that a few homebrews such as a doom port for Switch exist. Maybe it’s just a matter of the switchbrew wiki being filled. The hackers point to a tutorial where you can learn how to make your own homebrew with libnx, as well as a few samples.

Last but not least, the hackers explain that this is not a Kernel Exploit. Ultimately they intend to upgrade the launcher to work with kernel hacks.

This is great news! When can we start seeing stolen games to download?
It is statistically unlikely that you’ll ever see any stolen games to download, for the Switch or any other video game system for that matter, and even if they were stolen it’d be nearly impossible to verify that they are in fact from a stolen game. You’re better off just creating backups of your games, and at worst, depending on the laws of your country, legally downloading backups of the games you own.
Thats just mental gimnastics, the backups are in the 99% of times, pirated games.
But ok, call it back ups ripped by yourself.
When can we hope to see the first backup games run on this?
Stolen games ? Wrong answer. People dumped it to allow to share with us. If it is stolen games then that mean you get it without someone’s permission. Silly!

Not being a *** but I believe piracy is too soon for the switch. Being able to play backup games this early will ruin it and likely decrease the sales of its titles, causing less to be released for the system
Hi, here is maybe the first homebrew for the launcher !! 🙂 My Final Burn Alpha port running on the switch. Put roms in “/switch/pfba/roms/”. No audio, input a little crappy in the menu but SF3 3rd Strike does run fullspeed for example 🙂

It’s not for nothing, I speak in total ignorance, but it seems to me that both Sony and Nintendo are trying to sell as many consoles as possible in 2018 so much so that I think they have left and in some way helped the SCENE advance faster than normal this year, there is too much coincidence I do not say.

You’re on the wrong platform. Nintendo has the most expensive games, Zelda was $60 at launch and 5 years later you can bet Zelda will still be $60 or at a very low discount.
