The Legend of Sword and Fairy ported to the PSVita – Play the famous Chinese RPG in English on your Vita
It seems that Wololo /talk member and developer (or rather software porter) ‘usineur’ really likes porting open-source games to the PSVita (and doing an excellent job at it) so this time around, we got ‘The Legend of Sword and Fairy’, a Chinese RPG. Thanks to usineur, the Vita’s native library keeps on getting bigger so your Vita won’t put up a protest because it’s only emulating games 😉
What is The Legend of Sword and Fairy?
This protagonist is Li Xiaoyao, who’s an orphan from a small fishing village in China that lives with his aunt. When his aunt falls sick, he decided to go in search of a cure for his aunt and while he did that, he encountered a maiden that he fell in love with and so the player must guide Li through the dangerous path that faith created for him. The Legend of Sword and Fairy was released in Taiwan (ROC) by Softstar for MS-DOS computers in 1995 and has been ported to Windows and the Sega Saturn (quite an odd choice). It also got a TV series as it was quite popular in China.
While it was originally in Chinese, it was eventually unofficially translated to English with the name The Magic Sword and the Chivalrous Youngsters (and Chinese Paladin) and this is why we can play the game on the PSVita. Some years later, the ‘sdlpal’ project (a cross-platform re-implementation of the game
that’s also open source) was created and that’s the port we have on the Vita.
The Vita port was made by ‘usineur’, who’s ported various fan-made Zelda games and some other SDL-based games. If you’re a fan of RPG games and/or Chinese culture, I would suggest you give this one a go as it seems that it’s one of the best Chinese RPG’s ever made!
How do I get it?
To get it, you can open VHBB and get ‘sdlpal’ directly from there as it is available on VitaDB. Otherwise, you can follow the instructions below which are something longer (you have to get the data files yourself by downloading the full game which is free to download). If you have any issues, report them to ‘usineur’ on the GitHub link below in the Issues tab.

N.B: The data files are about 136MB large so it’ll take a while to install through VHBB! The sdlpal port is available on various platforms including Android and the 3DS (homebrew) among others.
仙剑奇侠传, in case if you want to know the name in Chinese.
plz port hearthstone to vita, vita wont do it 🙁
Looks amazing. I love RPG’s so I’m definitely gonna check this one out.
The game is famous in china. I’m gonna try this on vita.
> has been ported to Windows and the Sega Saturn (quite an odd choice)
Not odd at all, because the Sega Saturn was the console to own if you liked RPGs before Final Fantasy VII hit. As a result, it was more popular in the East until then.
Just a note: the game is also playable in chinese. You have to edit the sdlpal.cfg in ux0:data/sdlpal and just change the line “MessageFileName=m_eng.txt” to “MessageFileName=m_chs.txt”
so famous theirs even a TV-Show call Chinese Paladin made in 2006. Girl friend love it.
Wow, this game is called “Chinese Paladin”. It also has a drama show.
