Hacker qwertyoruiop announced today on twitter that he has a working exploit on PS4 firmware 4.5x. Although he apparently confirmed his work on 4.50, he says the exploits should work on firmware 4.55 as well. (update: the hacker confirmed 4.55 is vulnerable, see below)
When asked for details, the developer confirmed the userland exploit uses a webkit vulnerability.
Update: unlike we initially stated in this article, people pointed out that at the time of writing, the hacker had only shown he has the webkit exploit (user) and that he was still working on porting the kernel exploit. (thanks to @i8br for pointing this out). However, Qwertyoruiop has now confirmed both the Webkit and kernel exploits work on 4.55.
PS4 Jailbreak release when?
Of course, the question that’s burning everyone’s lips is when this exploit will be released, if released at all. Qwertyoruiop has a solid record of releases on iOS, but has also in the past mentioned exploits on that device that he never released. I have contacted the hacker for details on that, and will update with his answer if he ever gets back to us.
Update on release plan: Qwertyoruiop has replied (thanks!) and told me he doesn’t know at the moment if this will be released or not. In an ideal world he would keep a kernel exploit for private access and research on future firmwares, and release only if/when he finds a second user/kernel exploit combination.
In the meantime, I strongly encourage people to stay on has low a firmware as possible, and for those willing to dig deeper into exploits, to give a try to the webkit exploit he released a while ago.
