Correct me if I’m wrong, and I probably am, but isn’t this technically piracy as the original game had to essentially be cracked to get the source code?
Or is this a grey area as it’s the engine and not the games?

I think the original Prince of Persia is freeware, kinda like Doom. So if this is the case, then no, porting it to the Vita wouldn’t make it piracy.

    • MagilsugaM says:

      its abbandonware

Just shut up and game on will you?

    • warfaren says:

You can’t get a game’s (or any program’s) source code by cracking it, cracking is done to remove things like copy protection.
You can’t really get the source code unless the developer open-sourced it themselves. What you can do is try to recreate the source code either by just playing and analyzing the game, and try to write your own code that functions the same way, and/or you could disassemble the game (which is terribly hard) and try to write your own code that produces the same assembly code.

And yeah, like you say, if someone creates an open source engine rewrite for the game (using maybe one of the above methods) and publishes only that but not the game data files (such as the levels, textures, music, etc.), that’s perfectly legal.
