SDLPoP-Vita, play the original Prince of Persia on your Vita!
I have no idea what the deal is with French developers and granting my wishes, or if it’s all just an happy coincidence but I’m still happy this keeps happening. With this, another game gets taken off my wishlist (even if this one isn’t a GekiHEN entry). Developer usineur has ported the engine SDLPoP to the Vita, which now allows us to play the original Prince of Persia game on the Vita (possibly even its mods). The developer says this is an early port but everything should work and encourages everyone to report issues on his GBATemp release thread.
What is SDLPoP?
SDLPoP is an open-source project that aims to allow people to play the original Prince of Persia DOS games on modern systems without the use of tools like DOSBox. It was originally created by disassembling the code of the original game to get the source. Now we can all enjoy it on the Vita thanks to developer usineur.
Instructions for SDLPoP
Quick installation:
- Install SDLPoP-Vita.vpk using VitaShell
- Extract the prince.zip archive into ux0:data/
Controls:
- Left: turn or run left
- Right: turn or run right
- Up: jump or climb up
- Down: crouch or climb down
- X: pick up things
- X +left/right: careful step
- /\: display remaining time
Download SDLPoP
To play SDLPoP on your Vita, you need to head to usineur‘s GitHub release page and get both the VPK file and the prince.zip file. After that just follow the extraction instructions for the zip file and play the game. If you run into any issues, I would advise you to report them here so the developer can get around fixing them.
Happy gaming everyone!
[Update: it has come to our attention that the developer’s page contains copyrighted content that we cannot link to here, so we had to remove the download urls]
Time to update to 3.60!
Good Times!
Correct me if I’m wrong, and I probably am, but isn’t this technically piracy as the original game had to essentially be cracked to get the source code?
Or is this a grey area as it’s the engine and not the games?
I think the original Prince of Persia is freeware, kinda like Doom. So if this is the case, then no, porting it to the Vita wouldn’t make it piracy.
its abbandonware
Just shut up and game on will you?
You can’t get a game’s (or any program’s) source code by cracking it, cracking is done to remove things like copy protection.
You can’t really get the source code unless the developer open-sourced it themselves. What you can do is try to recreate the source code either by just playing and analyzing the game, and try to write your own code that functions the same way, and/or you could disassemble the game (which is terribly hard) and try to write your own code that produces the same assembly code.
And yeah, like you say, if someone creates an open source engine rewrite for the game (using maybe one of the above methods) and publishes only that but not the game data files (such as the levels, textures, music, etc.), that’s perfectly legal.
correct me if im wrong but who the fnux cares about piracy on 27 year old software
“its not piracy, its share with your anon friends :D” hahaha thats true, who cares!
I love the ps vita hacking scene there is always new awesome homebrews
native access to the vita hardware definitly rocks, didn’t even think I’d be playing old pc games on the Vita. Thanks!
