RetroArch Update: PCSX-ReArmed now working!
If you read my latest GekiHEN Wishlist article or have been reading my articles on emulation in general, you know I am an apologist of doing our best to ditch the PSPemu that everyone is still so obsessed with and this includes de PS1/PSX emulator. It is wonky, not 100% compatible and we have to play it at a god-awful upscaled 480×272. While I don’t know if the guys over at libretro read this blog (I hope they do!) they did heed my plea for a PS1 emulator since the latest RetroArch nightly release brings us PCSX-ReArmed support on the Vita (courtesy of Frangar)! They teased it a few days ago with this tweet:
PCSX ReARMed (PlayStation emulator) progress on PS Vita! https://t.co/83pOxRQTHU
— libretro (@libretro) 24 de setembro de 2016
Which was followed up this morning with the announcement that PCSX-ReArmed is now available on the PS Vita! I tried two games but couldn’t get it to boot, I don’t have the time to troubleshoot right now but you can check here to see what games people are playing and with what success.
What is PCSX-ReArmed?
PCSX-ReArmed is a fork of the popular emulator PCSX-R which itself was a continuation of the original PCSX emulator. One of its most popular features (still today) is the fact that it worked near flawlessly with a BIOS file. ReArmed is the libretro port of this emulator for ARM platforms (Android being the main example) and is probably the most compatible portable emulator in the market. On the PC version of RetroArch PCSX-ReArmed is substituted by mednafen-PSX. The current Vita version runs many games at 60fps, but more optimizations are coming.
Download PCSX-ReArmed
To get the latest version of PCSX-RA, just head over here to the libretro buildbot and get any nightly that is from the 26th September onwards. I would recommend you post on the comments what games are working and how they perform for other users, if you don’t mind the trouble. That would help a lot of people.
A new day is dawning for the Vita, that much is for sure. Enjoy the release everyone!

Is the PS1 Vita version really wonky? I have had 100% success rate with it :0
Yes…A few games either…A: very slow to the point of unplayable…and B: Some games don’t work (i tried mega man legends 2…. it didnt work) it gives you an error…(one thing i noticed about this issue though….is that the game booted up and then the capcom logo was visible…then it gave me an error)

How i can load roms? i need to copy .iso file, or archive, or just .bin file?
According to the comments in gbatemp – bin and cues
Also pbp ones
You can left the .bin file only without .cue file; it accepted. So, you will not get too much files inside the folder.
My pcsx is onlywing the cuefiles bins do not show up and just crashes when trying to load cues what gives?
Way to *** all over TN-X, lol.
This desperately and the PSP version when it comes out have L2/R2 button controls by touching the back-top-left&right corners so that the L2/R2 BUTTON GRIP COVER grips by JOETSU Electronics work. (If they don’t already)
I tried with Metal Slug X on bin/cue format and didn’t work
Just tested it. It works fine on mine.
It is a little slow though.
I’ve got Deconstruction Derby Raw working. It’s just figuring out where to putting a real BIOS file. Looking at the config setup explains where the best place to put the bios and the CD image files.
pretty please with sugar on top where does the bios go?
The default is ux0:/data/retroarch/system/ For the games, I put each game in its own folder in ux0:/data/retroarch/Games
I created the Games folder.
thank you suikoden ii works like a charm….
seanp2500, Suikoden II, a man with taste I see! 🙂
I’ve tested Rampage 2: Universal Tour, Rampage Through Time, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2. All of them work without a hitch, although the lack of L2 and R2 as of right now make both Spider-Man games about unplayable unless you swap out the controls. Even then it’s a little hard but still workable, very happy with the results either way. I’m going to need a bigger memory card…
Update on THPS2, it does work very well, maybe even better than my physical copy does anymore, but it doesn’t seem to save
Luckily save states make that problem null and void but still.
Also Pepsiman and Rampage: World Tour also work just fine.
Tested silent hill. I’ts working pretty good
First…post on Wololo
Liked this pcsx release and did one game testing so far to check out settings, stability, and others.
Just like the other say Bio goes in system, if you moving save data from psp 1k-3k then you need to use a software memcardrex to go from vmp to mcr and just rename mcr to srm… well it work but I notice since I was testing it with SagaFrontier there no second mem slot?
Going play with it more later…
Soo…. other test… Spyro 3 does not retain save data. I suspect possible long name issue or symbol but still doesn’t retain it only during the game. Once you close the game it gone.
Also trying to close the active game create a crash.
I still need to try another game to see how other save data work but the saga frontier one save just like *.bin file so it wont save like the game id if anyone need that info.
Great work so far much better than ps1 support on ark.
I’ve used a few Retrocore emulators on the vita like genesis_plus_gx and mame and they work fine. However when I run pcsx-rearmed and attempt to load a game it crashes with the error message ….
‘An error has occurred in the following application. (C2-12828-1) Saved Core File Succeeded. ux0:data/psp2core-1474917534-0x00000333b3-eboot.bin.psp2dmp’
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the vpk, rebuilt the vita database, restored the vita system, but still the same error. I have the bios files in the correct folder and have tried various .bin, .cue, .iso and .img game files but no luck 🙁 Any pointers appreciated.
curious if this is ps tv or first gen vita etc but my advice would be to backup vita mem card and format
I’m using the slim model. I reinstalled using the latest nightly build and everything seems to be working just fine with PCSX-rearmed, no more crashes and Silent Hill plays just great 🙂 I have no idea why it would crash but all is good now.
I had the same issue when I didn’t unzip the .bin file property, also I think you need to put a .cue file with each time for it to play (could be wrong on that).
Nice I bought a 2nd vita for all my legit purchases, and will use my modded phat for homebrew and emulators!
R2c2, you should try deleting the settings .cfg file in retroarch via filemanager, hopefully this helps!
symphony of the night is flawless for me.
Yah, Diablo, Gauntlet legends, nuclear strike, asteroids 3D, Bomberman world, Pacman World, MDK all work really cool 🙂
Quake2 exits 🙁
looks like Img’s do work.
@Jolly Thanks, I tried that but no joy, it still crashes when trying to load a game. I’ll keep trying as I so want to play Silent Hill (again) 🙂
@R2C2, Ah man that sucks :/ i hope you figure it out! Do you def have the most recent build? Resident Evil 2 and Tomb Raider work flawless.
Is there local multiplayer for PS TV ??
If your still not wise to where the Bios goes, try /ux0:/data/retroarch/cores/system that nailed it for me. Diablo didn’t work until i put the BIOS their, so I’m sure other games require the BIOS to work fully.
thank you man I tried the other system folder and it still wasn’t recognizing the bios
Does it play .pbp games
yes
FFVII doesnt work, it black screens for like 1 sec then goes to the select cores tab
tekken 3 dosnt works….. i mean it does.. but laggy
Issue:
Jet Moto 1 – Player Spawns sideways everytime (Ideally unplayable),
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 – If vita sleeps while playing the game the music stops but game sound still works (Not a real issue)
NHL Powerplay 96 – If vita sleeps while celebrating a goal the game crashes but you can still move? (Weird, but manageable)
Working: Spider-Man, Rugrats – Search for Reptar, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, Jet Moto 2, NHL PowerPlay 96
Mortal Kombat Trilogy runs flawlessly,Tekken 3 runs so slow in default settings, needs tweaking to make it playable.

I’ve just tried the latest 2016-09-27 build and PCSX-rearmed seems to working like a champ (no C2-12828 error anymore). I’ve only been playing Silent Hill just for a while but I can honestly say that playing PS1 games on a vita just feels right. I have played Silent Hill on a PSP3003, a PSP GO, JXD7800b and a GPD-XD, but the Vita definitely wins. All I need now is an update to SCUMMVM and I will be very very very happy 🙂 🙂 Thanks Retroarch team.
Tested a Saga Frontier pbp I made a while back myself and it worked full speed but did not retain save data after I closed the emulator.
Either enable automatic writing of save data to the memory stick at timed intervals in the retroarch settings, or return to the retroarch menu and quit from there instead of the vita home menu.
there is alot cool ps vita game i dont want to west my time with ps1 game any more
Tried a few more game…. saving data… is a hit and miss I tried Chrono Trigger and it made a save data without issue but for Spyro 1 it did not. “update” Just tested what someone mention earlier, with this same game after I save in game and “quit” retroarch and crash…. it have retain the save data…. O_O”
Was also going say the anolog dont work but… once you get into the game you have to turn it on or before in the input setting.
Retroarch have a few issue it seem though… but good job so far
Where can I download a psx/ps1 iso discography?
You don’t want an image discography. google search “psx2psp games download” and use those shrunken pbp files.
Nice another pass time for my vita…
keep up the good work guys
10000000000% working !!! LOVE U GUYS!!
How the heck do I get this thing to read my game files? I have the BIOS (SCPH1001.BIN) in the System folder and it reads it just fine, but every time I try to add Gran Turismo 2, the emulator isn’t reading it. Is it Because it’s a .bin file?
Retro arch only loads 3 bios files, scph5500.bin, scph5501.bin, scph5502.bin http://wiki.libretro.com/index.php?title=PCSX_ReARMed#BIOS
didi you try using emctools?
1.- drag gran turismo.bin to ecm, it make a file called gran turimo.bin.ecm
2.- drag the new file gran turimo.bin.ecm to unecm, it rewrite gran turimo.bin and that file is the one you have pass to the folder on your ps vita
in my case i create a folder called Isopsx, no matter the name, it is just to know where are my psx games, and now in the emulator, you can watch your game in load content, you just have to find the folder rout.
THIS. I have my .bin and .cue files in the same folder but when I open the folder in pcsx to load content it doesn’t show any files
I have the same problem. Have the bin and cue files in a folder but when I access that folder in load content it doesn’t show anything.
double comment, sorry didn’t show first one
it can run megaman legend and medal of honos, the bad new is, the emulator doesn’t have a way to configure the right stick to use, and to use L2 and R2, you have to change in the game, configure input and change de left and right dpad as a L2 (left dpad) or R2 (right dpad), i hope the developer could add a second stick to used in the games like medal of honor to move de aim or the camera in games like soul reaver or megaman legend, but right now i think we can play games like, resident evil, megaman x4, x5, x6, final fantasy.
some one know how add cheats, like gameshark?
i go to try just adding a txt file.
Did somebody try metal gear 1?
This is just marvelous! for very first time it’s possible to play Metal Gear Solid, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Yu-Gi-Oh the Forbidden Memories on the Vita
Not first time… I have a legal Metal Gear Solid on vita since…. like ages ago
Good for you, the game was unable to get after that.
how i make the bubble icon more like the one in the picture? the link from which i downloaded this on here gave me regular retroarch black bubble…
Final Fantasy IX is working…I love you guys for this one
Tested : FF7 – Vagrant Story – Brigandine – Bust a groove
