The GekiHEN Wishlist: Stuff I’d Like to See on Vita (Part I)
That time of the year is upon us again! No, I don’t mean Christmas. Not Summer either, that’s just about to end. I’m talking about contest season! It’s the stuff that fuels scenes, where developers compete for the better entry and strive to do better than their peers! I, for one, love these contests because they usually bring so much great stuff. If you guys don’t remember, about a year ago we had the reVITAlize contest organized by Wololo himself, to try and give a boost to the development then surrounded around the Rejuvenate hack. The contest brought us entries like VitaShell 0.1 and VitaQUAKE 1.0 and back then I did a series of articles with stuff I would have loved to see come out of the contest.
Well Rejuvenate and reVITAlize are now a curious part of the history of Vita hacking and thanks to our friends at CustomProtocol, we now have a new contest: GekiHEN.
As far as I’m concerned that’s all the motivation I need to bring back the wishlist and maybe inspire developers who have no idea what to enter as a part of the contest. It worked for VitaShell, so maybe I can do my part once again with this series of articles. However, I am going to change some of the rules from last time:
- This time around I won’t do different articles for games/apps. Everything goes on the same article.
- There will be a round where I will ask you the reader, using a poll, what you’d like to see and after sorting through the realistic answers, publish them on an article.
- As with last time, the order of preference is not defined by how soon/late the entry appears.
- I will always try to keep the choices realistic because I know enough to not go around asking for devs to port PCSX2 onto the Vita. I mean, really?
- If the an open-source version is available, I will link it in the title. I am doing your research for you devs! 😉
- I am going to focus on games for the most part because the Vita is a gaming console. I may touch on a few apps, but only those I believe could truly enhance the Vita experienceTM.
With that said, I’ve wasted too much time already, let’s get on with the damn list already!
Plugin Wrapper for Legit Games:
If you follow my Twitter, you should know that I was slightly disappointed when plugins were announced for Henkaku+Vitamin, they were locked to people who were using their own legit game dumps. However, not only are Vitamin and MaiDumpTool extremely unreliable for dumping games (nor can they work together without issues), they don’t make 1:1 dumps of games and resort to all sorts of hacks to make them work, which is why many a game doesn’t even work properly on them. I am not alone in this however, so hopefully if someone can’t make this, maybe Henkaku will eventually evolve to include something like that. Whatever the case, Team Molecule already gave us more than I ever expected, so I won’t be crossing my fingers for that to drop any time soon (or ever).
Exult for Vita:
Do you want to play what is considered one of the best cRPGs ever made for PC on you Vita? Do you? I sure do! Even though ExultPSP is an actual thing, the old graphics don’t really look that good, even with filters, because of the 480×272 resolution of the PSP being upscaled into the marvellous 960×544 that the Vita boasts. Although, in my honest opinion it is about time we bury VHBL (no disrespect Wololo, but its time is come and gone) and PSPemu homebrew and start focusing on the great things that we can bring natively to the Vita.
If you want even more Ultima on your Vita, you could also port:
- Pentagram: an open-source implementation for the poor cousin Ultima VIII
- xu4: an open-source implementation of the revolutionary Ultima IV
- Nuvie: an open-source implementation of Ultima VI, which also allows you to play the two spinoffs Martian Dreams and The Savage Empire
There’s plenty classic gaming to be had here friends… and yes, own all these games on GOG.com but I would love to be able to play them on the Vita instead of my 1080p monitor.
OpenTyrian:
You seriously didn’t see this coming? Like not even from a mile away? I mean c’mon, it’s Tyrian 2000! It’s even free on GOG.com if you want to play it right now! But as with most shmups, I prefer to play it on the Vita. There are some games that just feel much better if you take them with you on the go. Did I mention it’s Tyrian 2000? Because it is. On to the next one!
XBMC/Kodi:
If you were around on the days of the original Xbox scene, you might remember XBMC. heck, you might still even run it on your Xbox. I know I do.
For those that don’t know what it is, Kodi (formerly known as Xbox Media Center) is a very powerful media center that features a metric ton of plugin to enhance its functionality even further. It can read local files or stream them from other devices that are sharing media on your network. However, I do not know how viable it is to port this to the Vita. I know that the Xbox version was dumped because the system was not powerful enough to run the newest versions, but maybe the Vita can do one better. Not expecting it, but it sure as heck would be cool.
GemRB (BioWare Infinity Engine implementation):
I mentioned greatest RPGs of all time earlier, so it is only fitting that I mention one that was so popular, the Kickstarter for it’s spiritual successor gathered $4,188,927. Over 4 million dollars. You know what I would do with that kind of money? I would be set for life! heck, two lives! But getting back on topic: GemRB is an open-source port of the engine that powered Planescape Torment, as well as Baldur’s Gate 2 and the two Icewind Dale games. The best thing is that it is not an impossible port to achieve: the GemRB website features screenshots of the engine running on everything from PC to Android and even a NOKIA N810! I am not kidding. Here’s proof. This would be the greatest thing ever. One of the greatest games of all time running on the most underrated, underappreciated portable console of all time. If you ask me, that’s a match made in heaven.
Prince of Persia:
The last entry in this part of the GekiHEN Wishlist is going to be another classic. Before Ubisoft successfully brought back the saga and then killed it deader than a fly on the wind-shield of your car, the only version of Prince of Persia I knew was the one I had played on DOS I don’t even remember how many years ago. It doesn’t look terrible considering it a DOS game and the gameplay is very solid and challenging. There are also mods for it to further the value of such a port so it doesn’t seem like a bad idea now does it? I know my girlfriend would never let of the Vita if this got ported.
So there it is! The first part of the GekiHEN Wishlist is come and gone. Did you like my picks? Do you feel like throwing me out a window and into the front of a train? Whichever it is, please feel free to sound off in the comments with your picks! Please don’t say PCSX2, it’s not going to happen. Ever.
Let’s hope GekiHEN brings us a ton of cool stuff, while checking on Twitter I’ve already seen one developer asking if a major update to his plugin could get entry so that’s a promising start. I want more cool stuff for my Vita! Counting on you developers to make it happen and I’ll be here to report on it!
Until next time and happy gaming!

Man, it would be a LOT of work but a port of the original Halo: Combat Evolved (with or without multiplayer) would be awesome. The game isn’t graphically intensive anymore, and could probably actually run on a potato.
I can run halo on a laptop with 16mb of video ram so…..or 24mb but regardless halo is possible im sure
The source code has never been released or leaked for Halo Combat Evolved so a port is not going to happen.
I’m really Hoping for a save decrypter that can decrypt legit games saves that can be used with dumped games and legit games for other users.
Maybe unrealistic, but would a Skyrim port to PS Vita be possible? I remember back in the day, ’twas said by Sony that PS3 and Vita games were very similar, development-wise (or something like that).
I think the big piece your missing here is this: Skyrim isn’t open-source. Nor would it ever be. It’s not like a random developer can just pick it up and port it. The only way it would ever happen is if Bethesda decided to do it, and they would have done it a long time ago if that’s what they wanted. Not to mention this wouldn’t even be related to homebrew, which is the presumed purpose of this article.
openMW thought ?
I was thinking that, since Skyrim (PC) is moddable (and thus, probably a lot known about its “inner workings”), someone could work some voodoo. The article looked to me like a homebrew wishlist that included ports of many old games, so I added my own wish to the list.
Would a Skyrim to PS Vita port be possible? I remember Sony saying something about Vita and PS3 games being similar, development-wise. Sorry if double-posting; my comment didn’t appear.
I highly doubt plugins will ever be available for non dumped games. There has to be a reason why only games dumped by Vitamin work. Vitamin must either edit the game in a way that allows plugins to be loaded, or the game must be unencrypted for plugins to be loaded. Either way is iompossible when the game is on a cartridge. Would be awesome if the Vitamin devs shed some light on this.
What Vitamin does (I think!) is open the game so that the assets are decrypted but install itself on top the game so it runs as “the game”. Have you ever had one of those problems in Vitamin where after dumping the assets, instead of going to the eboot decryption it fails to open Vitamin again?
If you try to open the game you were dumping after that, the Vitamin process resumes because the program itself was tied to the game. So there’s a weird hack there going on.
Of course we know plugins are allowed by steroid.suprx so we would have to find a way to load that into the game somehow. That’s why I said I wasn’t getting my hopes up. It may be impossible.
All solid entries to the wish list, I would like to see a way to play Castle of the Winds and maybe Last half of darkness. Those point and click games would never let me put my vita down.
Make a CSPSP for vita. This will be a definite top award-winning project. The game had enormously big fan base when the psp was alive.
make a N64 emulator i’m dying to play ocarina of time using ps vita native hardware
No please dont all n64 emulators are based on Paul lambs code from forever ago. We need new code since even the best compatability on oc for n64 is laughable vs any other console
True, but I doubt anyone is gonna write a whole new N64 emulator for the Vita. And I doubt anyone who would want to port something to the Vita would be wasting their time. I think mupen64 would be a nice one to consider. It has decent enough compatibility and already has an ARM port that runs well on older hardware. My Xperia Play could even handle most games on the Android port.
Oh, also, if you want an N64 emulator that’s totally fresh from the ground up: http://www.cen64.com/
what about porting in “project 64” i used it to play ocarina of time successfully although there were some other games that it said have issues
I remember project 64 for the PC played Ocarina of time at 60fps on my ancient windows xp computer with 256MB of ram and an old intel pentium (can’t remember which one) and original windows xp (no service packs), Majoras mask had some slowdowns on certain cutscenes but other wise worked perfect 2 as did many other games

For the opentyrian port, look here : http://wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?f=116&t=46738&sid=7beed2ab79da835ba087f2c773b81377
I’ve had my eyes on that. The article was written before that however. As soon as there is a release you can bet I will be there to report it!
when it will be ready i release, now you can test WIP build 😛
It would be nice to see a warcraft 2 on the vita (probably a wargus port?)
A Ikemen port. Is a open source mugen clone
A wiiflow clone with 3d game box opening retroarch and the game selected.
A win95/98 emulator for old games like mechwarrior/age of empires 2 with touch
A thread to all make his wishlists to this event.
is it possible to run RPG maker MV games on VIta since they use HTML5. it makes PS Vita the ultimate RPG machines 😀
The 2 things I’m hoping for one day is a Dreamcast emulator, and a Gamecube emulator. Probably not possible but we can only dream
ok ok @TYPHOON_NEON got the PCSX2 thing since the last time you replied to my comment but we CAN get an Xbox or Gamecube emulator, haha just teasin’ you, I guess there’s no hope for the sixth generation :p
Reicast is the closest thing you could get running on vita. I mean dreamcast runs full speed in many android phones.
Yup, as Magus says the Dreamcast *may* be a possibility. The developer of Reicast has expressed interest in porting it to the Vita so that’s a start.
And thanks for taking my joke as it was, a joke. I was not mocking you specifically, just making light of the fact everyone seems to expect too much of the Vita’s hardware 😛
I wouldn’t mind if somebody could port the awesome MVSPSP (NeoGeo), CPS1 and CPS2 emulators to work natively on Vita. NesterJ too!
Retroarch runs all those and more natively on the vita.
Sure, but MVSPSP runs more NeoGeo games and better, even running under VHBL
How about the 3D java games that was never a reality in java emulator on PSP
A cps3 emulator so that we can play sf3rd strike, would be great
I would love that too
Tnv being ported would be nice, aside from that maybe quake 3?
VLC, a decent browser, & PPSSPP would make a Vita/PS TV with Henkaku a real power house. We all know the default apps are either garbage or are missing a lot of very useful functionality, so pretty much anything would be a massive step up.
We all know that ps vita has stronger system than 3ds , but still its impossible for these hackers to port 3ds exclusive games…
Lets say… Monster Hunter ?
better if they can mod MH Frontier to spoof your region a dedicated server for 3.60 users, and a translation patch while at it. lol
PS1, PSP is to vpk conversion.
I think that is going to be a Vitamin update at some point.
Really hope so, I’d love to turn my white Playstation TV into a PS1 / PSP console.
Why don’t you make a contest for hardware to find a way to install a external drive (hard drive/Pendrive/memory adapters)to vita so there will no be more memory problems
They’ve got kodi running and android phones… Gotta be able to hook it up for vita tv
here’s my wish list for the PS Vita:
Elite style game : maybe Alite (android base) or something like Oolite (pc base)
OpenTTD : A native version for the Vita would be nice (it was OK on the PSP)
Warzone 2100 : There’s a few open source versions around (would be cool on the vita)
Paradroid : My favorite C64 / amiga game. Freedroid / project paradroid , and other versions around to be ported.
Sentinel : Another C64 / amiga game by Geoff Crammond.
A few others games Deuteros X , Millennium 2.2 , The Chaos Engine , Dune 2 , Giana Sisters and lots more are open sourced ready to be ported..
I wonder if we could get a Linux / android emulator ???
I remember getting Windows 95 booted up on a PSP (pointless but fun)…
CP3 Emulator or any MAME emulator for the PSVita that is able to play Street FIghter III Third Strike would be wicked awesome.. Definitely on the wishlist for me haha.
Which Twitter is your Twitter? Can’t figure it out!
Thanks
@thekftX. Sorry, I use my old handle here on wololo.net.
Cheers 🙂
MODs for Prince of Persia DOS?? ***! They even released a C64 version??? Have to check that.
I’d like to see Descent on PSV someday…
want to see the other ps vita remote desktop app moonlight is nice but there is no solution for us that dont have nvidia caards
my wishlist (I’ll ask a lot in hopes of getting at least one 🙂 )
-Coldboot for Henkaku
-XMB Menu (let’s face it the pins suck)
-Screen Settings Menu (brightness, contrast, gamma, color, etc)
-Dolphin port
-PSP/PSX features (and no, I don’t want to get a PSP, would be like getting a DS already having a 3DS)
-Monster Hunter Frontier G region/online mod, if it ever gets dumped.
-FPS Counter
-Battery status and other data overlay optional function during game-play (to avoid checking with the home button)
vita,s homebrew scene will be amazing with all the possibilities presented.
was wondering if the vita could handle the old mechwarrior games from the pc, particularly the mechwarrior 3, and mechcommander.
keep up the awesome work developer’s!
All I would like to see is a Commodore 64 emulator. And ps1 iso loading
Is it possible to Port this on psvita https://liquidsky.tv
diablo1,half life , teamfortress ,Counter strike pc ports( 1.5 ,or 1.6) , Dreamcast EMU(nullDC ) , quake 3 arena, n64 emu native ..
What about usb loader for vita tv ?
BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP #BUMP
I would LOVE somebody to open up the game catridge port for standard memory. Imagine a 512GB sd card in the top of your VITA!!!! YES PLEASE 🙂
I would love to have AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) ported to the Vita, also of course N64, PS1, Dreamcast emulation and of course some support for external memory, a USB stick connected to the Vita would be really nice.
Mame,cps3,Dreamcast
A universal media player with hw acceleration.
what’s the point in asking for input if you are going to delete it or leaving it stuck in the moderation? smh
I think you have a few misconceptions about whatever is going on here:
1. No one deletes any comments here unless they are obviously spam
2. I have no power to approve comments unfortunately, I am a blogger and have no admin right over wordpress
3. I clearly wrote: “There will be a round where I will ask you the reader, using a poll(…)” and while many of the suggestions will go into the poll later on, the time has not come yet. It will however 🙂
So yeah, I just wanted to make that clear. I wish I could approve the comments (or edit my own articles after they are published) but I can’t. So I’m as powerless as the commenters left in limbo. I apologize but there is nothing I can do 🙁
