Vita Quake 2.0 released, brings Online Multiplayer
A few days after the highly successful native PlayStation Vita hack HENkaku was released for the 3.60 firmware, Rinnegatamante released Vita Quake 1.3, bringing HENkaku support. For those who don’t know, Quake was a highly popular first-person shooter released in 1996 for the PC. Since then, it has seen a large number of ports to other platforms, like the PlayStation Portable, the Nintendo DS, the 3DS, and, of course, the Vita.
Ever since the HENkaku version of the port was released, it has received several updates, and now, a particularly important feature is here, along with other changes (like rumble support for the PlayStation TV).
The video above is from the original v1.3 release, and the latest build brings many improvements. Anyway, about the new features….
Aaand, you probably guessed it from the title. This update to Vita Quake brings multiplayer support, both local and online. More than that, Vita Quake is able to connect to any native Quake or ProQuake server, of which there are multiple ones online.
VitaQuake
Cross-play between platforms also works, because of this. Remember the platforms I stated back in the first paragraph? CtrQuake (the 3DS port), for example, can play with WinQuake (for, duh, Windows) and Vita Quake. Those are the three platforms I’ve tried using to connect to a server. Multiplayer works fine, and, because Rinnegatamante figured it’d be nice, he’s hosting an official server for Vita Quake. Even better, you won’t need to type the IP of the server to connect to it, as the Italian developer added an option to connect to the official server.
About the other features – well, they’re also important, I suppose. We have performance improvements (which should be very noticeable, especially if you plan on playing online. Apparently, these improvements allow you to play online multiplayer at 60FPS with the PSP resolution), rumble support, and mod support. Of course, rumble will only work for the PS TV, and only if you have a compatible controller (duh, obviously Sixaxis users can’t have rumble, but I’m pretty sure most PSTV users have either a DualShock 3 or 4). At the moment, rumble is used when you get hit by an enemy.
About mod support, you can now expect to be playing Quake 1 mods on your PS Vita or PS TV. Mods are listed in a file (mods.txt), and an external application (Vita Quake Mod Selector) allows you to choose which game to launch.

This is impressive. The Vita homebrew scene, although quite… late, is definitely growing quickly, with high-quality homebrew already out, due to developers, but also because of the friendly community which encourages developers to continue working hard, instead of looking down on developers and demanding features as if the developers owed them something as other scenes often do.
Well done, Vita homebrew developers. Well done, all of you. This is certainly how you revive a console.

This is so awesome! Wish I had the skills to make/port this kind of stuff! Thanks devs working on recent homebrew. Defo made my Vita exciting again. c:
Really enjoying wolfenstein and quake. Reminds me of the early ’90s ;’-)
That is actually a really good feature. I’m glad that guy puts so much time into homebrew.
YES!! very happy with this port, now I am just hopeful for a quake 3 port! that would make my year haha
Great
Super nice really gives hope for the vita
Nice. Slowly getting to modern era games. Maybe next year we’ll catch up to present and finally be able to pirate the s#?! out of the Vita.
HOW TO PLAY QUAKE 1 ARENA MOD FOR THE PSP WITH BOTS ON THE VITA:
First download the mod from here: http://wololo.net/downloads/index.php/download/1389
Now open up the zip file and follow this path through the folders: qaar4.rar > psp_qaa_r4 > psp > game > QAA > ID1
Now copy all of the contents inside the ID1 folder and create a new folder on your pc name “quake 1 arena” without the quotes(make sure its lowercase)
Transfer all the files from your ID1 folder inside the rar file you downloaded to this folder
Now go to molecular shell and set up your FTP
Open up your FTP browser on PC and follow this path through the folders: ux0 > data > Quake
Transfer you “quake 1 arena” folder into the Quake folder
Now close your molecular shell and start up your vitaQuake Mod Selector
You’ll notice that there’s two options: “id1” = is your normal Quake game and “quake 1 arena”
Select quake 1 arena and press x to activate it and then press start to exit the app
Now go into vitaQuake and select New Game
Now go into options and adjust the settings, things you want to change are:
-Screen size: lower it down 1 bit
-Brightness: increase it to your liking
-Camera sensibility: lower it down halfway the bar
-Always run: turn it on
-Show crosshair: turn it on
-Game Resolution: lower it all down
Inside the options still, go to Go to Console option and press select to open up a typepad and type “addbot” without the quotes to add 1 bot to the game.
That’s it, have fun.
Things to know: If you press the PS Home button the game will crash once you return. The game runs at a 30fps speed with this configuration. I don’t know if it’s possible to add more than 4 bots, you’ll have to google it up and search for the proper command to use on the console option. It’s insanely addictive. I also tested Nazi Zombies Portable using this method but it didn’t work.
hey Wololo, there’s a writer at Neurogatget baitclicking and spreading false info on their website.I believe he’s getting the info here.
from 1.4 to 2.0, it’s a little big.
It’s more like vitaQuake 1.5…
weird version definition…
Maybe dev is following his own kind of semver… New feature (online multiplayer) -> new major version 🙂

So ecstatic with the progress these guys have made, great job to all you devs! Keep up the great work!!
Quake on my PSS Vita 🙂
ok ok do NOT talk no mooore
just tell me how to install
i;’m so excitedd
PLEEEEEEEEEEASE
The multiplayer is a buggy pile of *** right now, the controls lag, for some reason everyone fly’s when they jump…its weird, great start, but *** as is, the game however does run a lot better in single player
i did not experience anything like that it was so smooth for me
The flying was probably due to a single player map which involves less gravity coded into it. I hope later we can have a multiplayer lobby type thing so we can choose maps and such.
If someone makes a port of counter strike 1.6, i will donate atleast 1000 bucks to him/her.
Please make it, i keep dreaming everyday!
Just won a game in the vitaquake server , my nick was StrikerBOII . Cool game , Very few moments with noticeable lag.
i was like shock when this thing release this game is one of forgotten i was 10 yrs old at that time and this game release at windows 95 i was so happy that i able to play this game again 🙂 i hope there is a Quake 2 and 3 at vita and more blessing with this site
i want Quake 2
I wish someone would remake or port CSPSP =(..
Plys, make Diablo II on psvita!
i would love if they could make CSGO for the vita 😀
I love the new update, but is there a way to make your settings stay put? On 1.3, it wasn’t really a big deal, since all the controls were already plugged in properly, and all I needed to change was the invert the y axis, and add the crosshair. But now in 2.0, I also have to change the resolution and other things, AND change the controls to my liking, and when I exit the game, and go back in, they are back to their default settings.
Any chance of porting QUAKE II to the vita using henkaku?
