PS Vita 3.60 Hack: Everything you can do with HENkaku so far
It’s been a busy and somewhat confusing weekend after the release of a groundbreaking hack for the PS Vita 3.60. The hack, nicknamed HENkaku, opened the door to native homebrews and customization of the PS Vita, as well as re-opening access to PSP homebrew. These things were possible before on lower firmwares through other hacks such as Rejuvenate, the email trick, or various ePSP exploits, but HENkaku made the whole process dead simple.
Combined with the fact that many tools such as VHBL now exist on the PS vita to unlock things pretty easily, it can be confusing what one and cannot do with HENkaku. Tinkerers and devs are still processing a lot of info here and over the weekend we’ve seen almost a release or important announce every hour. Here’s a summary of what you can or cannot do, currently, with your newly hacked PS Vita 3.60:
(as a reminder, HENkaku can be installed on your 3.60 PS Vita by simply visiting the official site henkaku.me on your PS Vita’s browser and clicking on the “Install” button)
Native PS Vita Homebrews on Vita 3.60 with HENkaku
The main goal of HENkaku is to enable native PS vita homebrews. There was some early confusion as we believed existing Rejuvenate homebrews from the 3.5x era would work. Technically they could, but the format is slightly different: HENkaku needs vpk files, while Rejuvenate used velf files (technically a vpk file is a zip file containing the velf file + some metadata, but Yifanlu gave the precision that most velf homebrews from Rejuvenate will not work out of the box without some recompilation).
To clear the confusion, there exist several lists of available Vita homebrews for the HENkaku 3.60 hack:
- List of HENkaku Homebrews ready to install on /talk (thanks to humbertosnk)
- Showcase homebrews on the official HENkaku site
- VPK Mirror by our very own Wolfmade
- Also check this list over at the vitadevwiki (some of these might still be in velf format)
PSP Homebrews on Vita 3.60 with HENkaku and VHBL
I’m proud to see that Half Byte Loader is still heavily used on the scene, more than 6 years after its initial release. (oh, and here’s to the naysayers who say every hack enables piracy: HBL/VHBL was never used to run PSP isos in its 6 years of existence).
Installing VHBL on your HENkaku enabled 3.60 PS Vita will let you run a wide collection of PSP homebrews, including a bunch of emulators.
- Install VHBL with HENkaku on your 3.60 PS Vita
- Get PSP Homebrews here and here. Note: the process to prepare and install PSP homebrews from within VHBL is convoluted. Thankfully you should now be able to simply install your PSP Homebrews directly in /ux0:/pspemu/PSP/GAMES from the FTP in HENkaku’s shell. (People have confirmed this works)
PS Vita 3.60 Customization: PS TV Whitelist, Custom Themes, & more
Native access to the Vita system gives us ways to customize several aspects of the PS Vita. This includes improving game compatibility of the PS TV, installing custom themes, and more.
- PS TV Whitelist: how to with HENkaku. (The process is extremely simple given that there’s a HENkaku app you can now install that does all the work)
- A good guide on Custom Themes for Henkaku over at hackinformer
- HENkaku gives you access to a lot of folders and files on the PS Vita. Besides PS TV whitelisting and Custom Themes, there are lots of things you can tinker with, but proceed carefully…
Beyond HENkaku: Access to more files, Save Decryption/Encryption, Game dumping, …PSP/Vita backups?
Scene Veteran SMOKE recently released a mod of the HENkaku Shell (molecular shell), giving access to more folders beyond the original app0, ur0, and ux0. With SMOKE’s mod, the shell gives you access to tm0, vd0, vs0,… Molecular shell can also be updated to enabled full read/write on a series of folders.
Note that you don’t need a mod, the folders are actually available from any FTP client through molecularshell, they’re just not visible. for example, going to folder gro0: in your FTP client should give you access to the current Vita cartridge. Technically this lets you dump the content of the Vita cartridge, as discussed here. This does not mean games can be pirated (the dump would be encrypted) but gives some hope to the people looking for piracy on the platform (Molecule team have stated they’ve taken steps to reduce the risk of piracy through their platform, while admitting that piracy cannot be prevented forever once the platform is open).
In parallel, popular hacker MrGas demonstrated he is able to decrypt/encrypt PS Vita Save Data. This is potentially a major breakthrough. It could enable, among other things, the search for future exploits in video games, which could become new entry points to exploits such as HENkaku.

PS Vita save decrypted
On the PSP front, a PSP kernel exploit would be required to run advanced PSP homebrews, plugins, and PSP backups. Nobody has stepped forward to announce such a release at this point. The Zett stated that VHBL will be redundant in the coming weeks, which seems to imply a bigger release could be out soon for the ePSP and HENkaku. Maybe a new PSP kernel exploit? (I do not have the details and will have to defer to The Zett on this one).
We’ll be following the developers very closely in the weeks to come, to keep you updated on all those fronts.
hoping for a vita cart dumper and back-up loader..and maybe PSP too..
And the million dollar question for people who haven’t decided to update yet is when will Sony release a new FW to patch HENkaku? How many days till that? 🙁
Bro it could be anytime soon…….maybe in a few seconds, or in a few minutes, or in a few hours, or in a few days, or in a few months, or in a few years, or till judgement day!!! 😀
Or just before you die! 🙂
Well, my advice (which many would agree on) is you should update your vita and update it while you can, you don’t get another chance, life is no nintendo game, just update it and stick with the new home-brews 🙂
Heheh nice Eminem reference.
You can always download PS4/PS3/Vita OFW files before they update and install them manually later. The real question is when will the exploit be released to the public so we can selfhost.
Hi. What can I run with Retroarch emulator?
It is possible to launch PSX, N64 or PSP games?
Is there a hope on Dreamcast emulator in future?
1. Retroarch is an Emulater collection
2. it will possible with the next ePSP kexploit
3. There is a extrem buggy DC emulater for PSP. PS Vita
should be able to run it on a good performence, if somebody port it
INTERSTING NEWS INDEED
just wanted to ask if anyone thought it was funny that on the psp the lateset firmware was 2.60 and thats when everything broke lose and now the vita fw everything is opening up
What about package installer?
“The Zett stated that VHBL will be redundant in the coming weeks, which seems to imply a bigger release could be out soon for the ePSP and HENkaku.”
I think what the Z meant here (wild guess) is that in future there might be a VHBL.vpk like package that may be easier to install as a bubble, than the current method. Is this possible?
Yes, you might be right, I might have second guessed a bit too fast here
It happens to the best of us, bit then again, it’s your opinion on your own blog post, can’t fault you for that.
FFX is probably a bad example if you wanted to confirm that you modified the gamesave data. It was crossplay and we were already able to modify the data with bruteforce on PS3. Is there another game that confirmed this?
So one problem with this, there currently isn’t any mirrors of the website for the hack… when the website goes down so is the hack :/
It is not velf file in the vpk, but fself. Different formats.
Just want to know,
Is PS1 perfectly emulated ?
If so is it worth upgrading to 3.60 from 1.80 ?
Thanks
PS1 games are only perfectly emulated at full speed with sound on tnv as far as I’m aware. If you wanna play PS1 backups iso’s whatever you wanna call them then you should stay where you are. Pretty sure you can do almost as much/more (cuz the ePSP) on your fw than if you were to update then install henkaku. Currently ePSP is not compatible passed fw 3.52. I say stay where you are for now until more progress is made.
Wrong. TN-V Psone emulator is “bad.” The one in 3.20? I think is the best one and the other one is the app.db way. Those two are the best ones.
I’m thinking that in the future we are soon gonna see complete vita hack to play vita backups but even before that I’m hoping they gonna release an other kernel exploit for PSP games and I’m really excited for that.
can someone tell me where to put the sega genesis roms, they dont show up for me in the emulator
“(Molecule team have stated they’ve taken steps to reduce the risk of piracy through their platform”
Did they? I thought they said they didn’t specifically enable it but wouldn’t do anything to try and stop it either.
There was another statement after that, that most devs usually react as a “not my problem” when their tools are used to unlock piracy, that they believed they could do better and that even if piracy cant be stopped they would make it harder on people to use these tools for piracy purposes…
Which totally points HENkaku us something WAY bigger than just a userland exploit.
HOW DO I FIND IP FOR MY VITA TO FTP?
After installed the MolecularShell just press Select in the new app.
That will allow you to make a FTP to your PC within your connection.
Sorry bad English.
The main feature I want is to easily have my PSP game backups easily be playable and have bubbles for them on Vita XMB without needing a base game.
i had the same question. i downloaded filezilla . on my ps vita , i go to network , status , than ip adres . i type ip adres on filezilla but can not connect. please help me ( sorry 4 bad english)
did u type in the port number and press SELECT button on molecular shell
thank you bro . on molecular shell. i press select , ip and port number is given . and type that in filezilla .
it works
SERIA POSIBLE QUE AYUDARA HENKAKU U/O OTRO SAMARITANO EN ARREGLAR LOS ERRORES DE LA MEMORIA
Exelent i can’t wait to have everything that comes with henkaku
Why is anyone concerned about piracy on what has been considered a Legacy Platform for almost a year now? Big corps can complain about Emu’s all they want and resell it to us in 60$ POS, but does anyone still develop or even spend time behind the platform except the brilliant minds behind HENkaku? What’s the next big AAA tittle scheduled for release? C’mon now. Open up the platform and let us use it they way the Tech was intended to perform. D*** you Sony!
Because the Vita is still getting localizations of games that many people are interested in. NISA, IFI, Atlus, Aksys and XSEED are still releasing games, some of them exclusives. They’re not AAA’s but they have a niche.
I’m currently looking for a method to delete individual game saves to games like Gravity Rush and Neptunia Re;Birth; that usually require you to make multiple saves for whatever reason (Neptunia usually being Normal and True Ending trophies).
In my findings, deleting my second Neptunia Re;Birth1 save file (ux0:user/00/savedata/PCSE00443/data001.sav) only deletes the raw data, not the file’s info. Might be kind of obvious, given PS3 and PSP save file layouts…
However, given how Sony wanted to merge all saves into one dumb file, now we can’t edit out the saves we no longer want (developers were just too damn lazy to add Delete save functions, likewise Sony themselves not allowing us to remove saves from within the game.
I understand that Sony wants to protect potential gamesave exploits, but jeeze, even the PS4 allows us to remove saves we no longer want!!
If this save de/encryptor developer creates a program that allows us to manage our gamesaves, it would be a godsend.
should I upgrade my lower fw vita that has tn-v running on it,I already used henkaku on my other vita with current fw.
not yet
what if there are new ps vita gmes that you want to play that require this firmware, would you do it?
Can you manually update your vita to 3.60 firmware? I want to stay in 3.18 as long as I can for PS1, PSP and Package installer unless something better comes from henkaku, but I don’t want to miss the train either. Can someone give us a guide in preparation for this scenario? Or maybe better, a henkaku version for older versions such as 3.18 and 3.36.
yes you can with QCMA
how can i install the henkaku without internet on the vita?!
You can’t.
Like in Android’s HELIUM app, you need to set temp root-like permissions every reset. Hence the Vita too.
Vita 3.61 is now out.
Are trophies supported too? I want to earn the trophies, I just can’t afford all the games.
Hey can someone help me i have a 3.52 ps vita can i install henkaku or how can i ugrade to 3.60 manually???
Upgrade it via PC by using CMA
If i ued HENkaku , will i be able to play pirated PS VIta Games Like gravity Rush ??
