3DS: Downgrading from 10.x/9.x to 9.2 using homebrew
Note from Wololo: This tutorial on How to Downgrade your 3DS from 10.x/9.x to 9.2 using homebrew was initially published by /Talk member genxmur, as part of our monthly tutorial contest. Genxmur won the May tutorial contest for the 3DS (a $10 PSN code) with this entry. You can find the original post here.
NOTE:Apparently this might brick your N3DS but it’s much more safer using an O3DS,Also if you try downgrading from 10.4/10.5 or anything above you might brick it,10.3 is safe(Did it myself)
Hey Guys, let’s get into it.
Get a Homebrew launcher
Firstly you’re gonna need a homebrew launcher, if you don’t have one I recommend Ninjhax but basically anything works.
Link for Ninjhax: here
Congrats. You can now run homebrew 🙂
Setup
*Ahem* Moving on.
- 1)Get the sysUpdater app from this link:here
- 2)Place the contents in your ‘3ds’ folder (NOT the one with Caps).
- 3)Grab the update file you want from here
NOTE:Be sure to get it from the right section i.e. if you’re using an O3DS then get from the O3DS section
- 4)Now place the file in your SD Card,Most people prefer to create an update folder in the SD Card root and place the file in there but it’s up to you.
downgrade
- 5)Open your homebrew launcher and go into sysUpdater, you will see a few options. Select Downgrade. If the app freezes or any error occurs you can try using a different homebrew launcher or try the process with the same launcher a couple of times. It’s usually nothing to worry over though, I had to try 3-5 times to get it to work.
- 6)Wait Patiently, after the process is completed your 3ds will reboot (Hopefully) . Go into your system settings to make sure you’re on the correct firmware.
You can do the same process if you want to update, just replace the update file with the desired version and instead of selecting ‘downgrade’ select ‘update’ in sysUpdater.
Enjoy 🙂

This tutorial will cause people using a Japanese n3ds to brick. You need to add an extra step for it. It includes deleting one specific file
If you are using a Japanese n3ds delete the 000400102002CA00.cia file.
Yes Your Right Who Wrote This Tutorial?..
This guide links to a really old version of sysupdater that no one should use anymore. PlaiSysUpdater is the recommended downgrader these days; it is much more stable and will check the hashes of the CIA files before downgrading.
https://github.com/Plailect/PlaiSysUpdater
Also, this guide fails to mention that you should format your 3DS before attempting to downgrade. This has been found to lessen the chance of a soft-brick, and if that happens then usuallly your only recourse is to boot into recovery mode and update your 3DS to the latest version (11.0 as of this post). And since software downgrading has been patched in 11.0, you are sc*** unless you want to get/already have a hard mod.
What’s more, you should format your 3DS twice.
But really, this tutorial is redundant and potentially dangerous. Just use Plailect’s guide.
Wut? lol. no need to format twice.
Yes, there is. Some 3DS’ softbrick after downgrading for a reason that is still unknown. Because softbricking means having to update to the latest firmware (and thus, losing the ability to downgrade now that 11.0 is out), it is recommended to format the 3DS before downgrading.
Not always the case, but better to be prepared.
Old Post. 🙁
Will this also work on the 2DS?
freakyhax worked a treat for me 🙂
follow plailects tut. i got through it with no errors etc on o3ds firmware 10.6
News is getting kinda stale. Maybe talk about the guy that’s trying to dump Zelda Wii u to a SD card
@wololo: Please stop spreading old/incomplete/unchecked/whatever tutorials! That’s newbie like…
where are your tutorials then…..oh wait….
Right here, smart guy/gal: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki
But that’s not his tutorial though, smarty guy/gal
But you don’t need to write a tutorial for being against bad quality/outdated material
give me a tutorial to downgrade 11.0 without hard mod and I will give you $20 bucks 😛
Its not possible, and never will be. 11.0 added a mechanism that checks all the system files, and if you attempt to downgrade, the 3DS measures a change in the system files and bricks. The hardmod downgrade will probably also get patched soon, so you either get a hardmod now and downgrade, sell your 3DS and buy one with 9.2, or you forget homebrew and downgrade as a whole. Your choice.
Never will be? I wouldnt go THAT far.
$20? Do it yourself
The problem with a tutorial like this is that the authors on github who did the work and assembled all the tools, update their guide on a nightly basis. Even if the downgrading/A9LH guide is good today, it still poses a far greater risk than using the constantly updated one by the actual creator.
I would also boot into a CFW like Luma without an Emunand and install the sysupdater as a cia that way you should be able to avoid the problems mentioned in step 5.
I’m currently on 4.5.0-4U. There’s so many different 3DS hacking methods. What is the firmware that’s pretty much across the board considered to be ideal to be on. I ultimately wanna install permanent CFW to the 3DS internal memory (sysnand?), and be able to run 3DS ROMs. Not sure how much of this is currently possible. I have Cubic Ninja, and “The Legend Of Zelda – OOT 3D”. I’m rockin’ the original teal 3DS (if that’s relevant). What’s the advantage of the flashcarts, and which is the best, overall? Thanks.
9.0-9.2

Then follow this guide: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-1-(Homebrew)
And if you want permanent cfw use this guide afterwards: https://github.com/RShadowhand/ShadowNAND
old post but helpfull
