What to make of the Kojima Playstation combination
It must have been hard for Andrew House to contain his excitement during today’s announcement of a new partnership between one of the game industry’s most well know faces and the PlayStation brand. It isn’t hard to understand why, industry veteran Hideo Kojima is officially out of contract with Konami and his new studio is open for business.
Hardly a stranger to the spotlight Kojima nevertheless became “2015’s most talked about game industry personality” due to the controversy surrounding the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and his soap-opera like relationship with publisher Konami.
Tiptoeing around the Konami owned brand name Metal Gear, SCEI president Andrew House underlined the importance of the famous franchise to PlayStation.
While trying to suppress the biggest of inner smiles mister House asked the viewers to welcome “one of the most creative talents in gaming” and gave the mic to Kojima.
Hideo then announced that first game from Kojima Productions (Kojima’s new independent game studio) will be a collaboration with PlayStation.
What to make of the Kojima Playstation combination?
At this point there are very few facts known about the Kojima/ PlayStation collaboration. We don’t know the name of the game or genre let alone how it will play.
To me Andrew House’s words: “Kojima-san, on behalf of PlayStation and together with the fans, we would like to offer our full support on your new journey” didn’t only mean good luck on future ventures but also a way to state make something great and take “all the time” you need to make it great.
PlayStation is dedicated to support Kojima Productions project even though it may take long time before the game is ready for showing or release. It is safe to say that we can expect a Kojima game on a PlayStation device. Probably PS4 maybe in combination with PlayStation VR.
But this announced collaboration in no way means that the game will be a PlayStation exclusive even though it might turn out to be. If anything a timed exclusive is more likely in the landscape of today’s game industry.
Update: Kojima Productions official website has some text on it.
“From *** Sapiens to *** Ludens”
*** Ludens roughly translates to the Those who play. *** Ludens is A term made popular by Dutch historian Johan Huizinga. In his book *** Ludens advocates the cultural importance of play and what is adds to society
Update 2: fixed Konami productions to Kojima productions in the previous update.
Sometime after the video announcement it became clear that the first game out of Kojima Productions would be console exclusive to PlayStation.
Last and I I called it.hahahhahaha
My God!
Continuing from where PT stopped and on PSVR would surely cause some serious heart attacks!
A new P.T. like project with PSVR compatibility is also my best bet
is it safe to say that Playstation just dropped a nuke?
At the very least the perception of having dropped a nuke. But in the end I’m happy knowing a new Kojima experience is coming that is not Metal Gear. Unless Kojima goes the way of Inafune and Igarashi the new project might be really refreshing especially so if a VR experience
Please no more metal gear!! Since mgs3 they are too boring!!
Also keep mgs Acid and Acid2 for yourself
You could make the twin snakes for ps4
I don’t think you understand. While Kojima was there in making Metal Gear, he doesn’t own the rights to it. Konami owns the rights to Metal Gear, and unless they want to sell it off to Kojima’s new company or Sony, no one but Konami will be able to make a Metal Gear game.
Of course they won’t make another Metal Gear, it belongs to Konami you mutt -__-
Horray!!! Thank you stupid-little man!!
You wrote “Konami Productions” in the update… my eyes are bleeding! 🙂
Ouch. Thanks for pointing this out good Sir/Madam
He named his new studio Kojima Productions?! I thought Konami owned K.P. that’s why Kojima had to disband it when he leaved Konami. Well I guess the fact that he used the same name proves that it’s not…… I hope…..because if not hes gonna run into some legal problem with Konami….again
Come on PT/ S.Hills for PSVR….
Well, let’s see if Hideo can successfully step out of the shadow of Metal Gear, and if Konami can survive without him. Sure they can make more games without the auteur creator of the franchise, but will they be MG titles in name only? Phantom Pain already breaks the blueprint of the single player experience being the most important focus, more so than Peace Walker. It’s interesting how far things will go before they’ve completely strayed from Kojima’s vision and the games become indistinguishable from any other generic FPS/TPS title.
I would love to see a remake of searcher, or the supposed 2nd one that never made the light of day.
Is the word *** censored to ***?
Here’s to hopes that Kojima will create a game for the ps vita!!
A franchise to surpass Metal Gear..
Never. (x
Metal Gear is like a mountain, you just cant move it. You can climb on it and be happy about, but its very, very hard to surpass it.
Okay, its Kojima we’re on, but still… I doubt that this would _ever_ be possible.
