PS4: How to get your hands on a PS4 with a 1.76 firmware or lower
A fully functional PS4 Jailbreak is now available for PS4 running on Firmware 1.76 or lower. The Jailbreak allows to run native code and/or Linux. All files for that exploit have been released here. As such, PS4 models running firmware 1.76 will probably skyrocket in prices very soon, and now might be the last time to get one at a reasonable price.
About PS4 Firmware 1.76
PS4 Firmware 1.76 was released on 2014/08/20 (August 20th, 2014). Any bundle released before that date will have a firmware below 1.76.
Some advice when shopping for a PS4:
- It’s easier to ensure you have the right firmware version if get the device new and sealed, not “used”
- If you get a “used” console, be careful: most sellers update the console to the latest firmware before selling it. Ask them to confirm the firmware version before buying anything. This is true both online and in brick&mortar stores.
- On Amazon and eBay, some sellers sell a different product than what the description says. I have seen some sellers offering the Star Wars bundle instead of the Killzone Shadow Fall bundle, for example. Be careful here, as always, ask the sellers for details if possible.
- Amazon have a great return policy. Use it if the PS4 is not the one you expected!
Buying a PS4 new, with a guaranteed low firmware
The ideal way to get yourself an “old” PS4 firmware is to buy one of the old bundles, and to get it new. The ps3devwiki has a page listing these old bundles shipping with the old PS4 hardware, which are guaranteed to come with a firmware <= 1.76, if you buy them new.
On eBay, you can look for PS4 Launch in the Game consoles category. Make sure to get a “sealed” unit.

Additionally, people are reporting that consoles bundled with The Last of us usually ship with firmware 1.76. Update: several people are reporting that there are 2 types of TLoU bundles, and some of them ship with firmware 2.03. Get confirmation from the seller before buying those!

Does anyone know if the chips that the firmware are on are replaceable? just solder an old firmware chip into a recently bought one if you’ve updated the firmware too far?

Short answer impossible get!
Long answer unless you were lucky enough to dump $600 on an early starter kit fact is you probably will never find older dated consoles Sony or otherwise. Companies are smart with this sort of thing, even if you somehow acquired one chances are even then there is the small possibility the firmware would have have been tampered with during or after packaging before the shipping.
You can still find some of these bundles on eBay but they are expensive.
However that Special day is getting close for these :), they will probably only go up once exploits are released. Prices tend to run on the higher side for Amazon just an fyi…
Does anyone know if the Ghost edition of the Destiny PS4 would be fine?
I might be buying a used CUH-1003A / B01. The user says he factory reset it. How can I know what firmware it ends up on? He does not want to start and look at firmware number. Can it be less than 4.05? If he once upgraded can it be reverted?
