TubeHax released for 3DS – Smealum releases Homebrew Launcher + Region Free for all 3DS models
Update from wololo: Somehow I managed to completely miss the fact that The Z had published an article about this release a couple hours ago (you can find the Z’s article here). Yay, you get 2 articles on the same topic for the price of 1. Apologies about the mixup here, totally my fault!
Smealum delivers once again, and just released TubeHax.
What is TubeHax?
TubeHax and IronHax are two ways to get homebrews to run on your 3DS, and they run up to the latest firmware 9.9. They allow, among other things, to run emulators and enable region-free compatibility on your 3DS. TubeHax requires you to install the Youtube app, while Ironhax requires the game Ironfall. Both applications are free on the eShop, but Nintendo removed the Ironfall game after Smealum’s announce a few days ago, that the game had a vulnerability that could be leveraged to run homebrew.
He announced a couple days ago that another vulnerability exists in the youtube App, which you can get from the eShop, directly on your 3DS. At the time of this writing, the app is still available on the eShop, but it is likely that Nintendo will take action to either remove the app shortly, or patch it with a “security” Firmware update. so you better get youtube fast.
How to install and use TubeHax?
Smealum has a very detailed explanation page on how to install and run the homebrew launcher through TubeHax.
In order to install tubehax, you will need a console whose firmware version is between 9.0 and 9.9, as well as the YouTube application (available for free on eShop) and an internet connection.
Preparing your SD card
In order for homebrew to run on your system, you will need to place a few files on your SD card :
- boot.3dsx : this file should be placed at the root of your SD card. It’s what ninjhax/ironhax/tubehax will run first ! Usually, this is the Homebrew Launcher.
- 3ds/ : this folder will contain all the homebrew applications you want to install to your system. You can either place 3DSX files directly inside of that folder, or create an individual folder for each application you install.
To make things easier, we put together the homebrew starter kit; you can just download it and extract it at the root of your SD card. Alternatively, you may choose to only download The Homebrew Launcher menu executable and place it at the root of your SD card.
No matter what, you should have a file named boot.3dsx placed at the root of your SD card.Installing TubeHax
- On your 3DS, open the System Settings app, then go to Internet Settings and Connection Settings. From there, select your favorite Connection, tap the Change Settings button, and on the second page head over to the DNS section. Once there, select “No” for “Auto-obtain DNS”, and under Detailed Setup, enter the following address : 107.211.140.065.
- Save these new settings and close the System Settings app.
- Open the YouTube app. It should redirect you to a firmware selection page.
- Under “Select your firmware version”, choose your console’s firmware version. Getting this right is very important ! Once you’re sure you did it right, hit the Submit button.
- Wait for a few seconds. If you did all the previous steps right, the exploit should run and the Homebrew Launcher should load up !
Note: if you did get your firmware version wrong (which happens to more people than you might think), we’re still waiting for an answer from Smealum as to how to fix it, frenetically click on the “change firmware version” button that should appear on the page in youtube. You need to click on the button as soon as you can, consider clicking it repeatedly even before the page load. Otherwise at some point the page is frozen and you’ll have to try again.

First off… First.
Second, I have to say, I’m REALLY impressed with this exploit, and the apps it comes with. Particularly SNES. It works surprisingly well… in most cases. I’m in the process currently of testing it’s compatibility as well as with other games/programs. So if anyone has a suggestion, feel free to ask~
is anyone else having this problem? I’m getting error code 003-1101
The 3ds hacking scene seems to destroy the vita hacking scene!
I’m actually glad Vita is more secure than 3DS, HAHAHHAAHAHAAAAA…
Nintendo is weak, NX will be hacked in a week because Android, stolen account, etc… etc..
It would be hillarious if Nintendo forgets to patch stagefright. lol
Do you even know what you’re talking about? NX is not using android and knowing nintendo, its gonna be pretty secure.
Seriously search your *** before you start talking ***.
NX will not be an Android Console!
In what way does the 3DS scene destroy that of the Vita?
They have a userland exploit for a couple free apps/games and I think a root exploit for one paid game. They can currently use a SNES emulator with SOME SNES ROMs (Mario Kart and MANY others don’t work). The GBA emulator released with the hacks doesn’t even work (it might if you have a New 3DS, that’s the only thing that would make sense, as I see no reason to include it with a hack if it doesn’t work anyway).
The vita scene has a native hack, MANY ePSP hacks (of which support MANY homebrew apps / games / emulators / PSP ISOs).
It’s nice that they have a hack that was easy for EVERYONE to be able to get and use for free, but it basically lets you play some SNES games and that’s about it as far as I’ve found so far.
Gba doesnt work :/
same here…
Just make a new folder named *gba* in the root of your sd card
And drop the bios.bin in that folder…
can’t seem to get redirected to the page.. youtube loads up as per normal even aft changing DNS settings..
Make sure that you’re connected to the same internet that you changed the DNS of. Say, you changed ssid “home” DNS, you should be connected to the “home” network.
going to try this after work
Are there other homebrews available or is it just pretty much just the gba emulator without the bios?
****Please note, this is completely irrlevant to this topic****PS Vita has graphics comparable to PS3. The PS Vita is in a whole different league than PSP. The PSP can emulate dream cast in full 60 fps by now in 2015.
At, least PS Vita could possibly emulate is Xbox Orginal and that is a lot!.
If you doubt what im saying, than you must think the Vita is no more powerful than the PSP
.
Android games cannot compare at all to Vita games. If my nearly overclocked Samsung Galaxy S2 can emulate Wii with mildly lower specs than vita at 21 fps , than imagine what vita can do with 3Ghz OF CPU!!!!!!!!
Don’t even know why your talking about Vita when this is about 3DS.
But your wrong on so many levels here..
For one PSP can’t and never will run Dreamcast with it’s 333MHz. Androids can in fact compare to Vita if your referring to the Graphics. (Game quality is another thing) And Vita CPU is not 3GHz in fact it was stated it can go up to 2GHz.
Since you doubt me here, The PSP and Dreamcast are both 128 bit systems.
Its pretty possible by now. PSP’s emulation maximum is Dreamcast. (It’s a Null DC build) Watch this video.
It doesn’t lie. You can make your own Null DC build for PSP with the right button mapping. No custom build for PSP can be downloaded currently as we speak, but it can be made with the right knowledge.
https://youtu.be/skUS7UI5OGU
And here’s an awesome graphical reference for the capabilities of the PS Vita. https://youtu.be/UGVtliJGRkA
The CPU on my part stating is wrong sorry, wrong source.. But should you know 2000Mhz is more than enough to emulate something thats 729mhz max right??? Wii=729Mhz. I think thats more than enough. My computer emulates dolphin perfectly with melee at 948Mhz. My PC has 2.4 Ghz.
Dont know if you are trolling or serious. Anw even the most powerful pc you can get your hand on cant emulate the xbox original because no one worked on it. Also one of the main reason that the vita didnt have any Triple A game bc of its power incase you dont know.
One last thing. I think the incomplete wii emu on the play store need opengl 4.0. I doubt the Galaxy s2 has it and what can it do with a based 1.2ghz XD You cant even run 10bit video with it
Wrong,…Dolphin can be ran with Open GL 2.0…. On Windows XP…. It was like that at first….Please make sure to look on the website…. xD YOU KNOW Wii HAS Only 243Mhz of GPU RIGHT???
The ATI Hollywood Chip sadly of has 243 Mhz and only ONE GPU core… Look it up man…….
Ever heard of Killzone mercanary?
Even Wii emulation on Vita is possible.
Well, since you have doubts, It’s a proven fact that the PSP’s emulation limit is Dreamcast and anytything using the ioquake3 engine.
Games like ZEQ2Lite (PC) or quake 3 for ps2.
i
IM NOT SAYING the PSP can emulate PS2 but only the ioquake3 engine borderline. It’s a known fact..
Check this out! Dreamcast running on PSP IN 2008!!!
https://youtu.be/skUS7UI5OGU
Ioquake3 engine running on PSP fully
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vooU6DDXmp8
And a really good reference for PS Vita’s ACTUAL graphics capability
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGVtliJGRkA
if PSP can do Dreamcast than PS Vita can easily do Wii, easy as that. Why? PS Vita has the specs and runs OPEN GL 3.0 and DirectX9 perfectly!!! Button mapping is the real problem. But IT IS possible.
Dont believe Vita runs OPEN GL 3.0 heres’s a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbjmxuu4XQY
Vita has greater GPU than PS3 for it’s Live Area OS. All facts on the table.
Erm.. Nope vita has nowhere near 3Ghz of CPU, it could burn your pants. But of course Vita could perform better than S2 (aside of hardware) because most of Vita codes are native and less overhead compared to Android. Also, vita GPU is 10x 3DS performance (actually more).
i have a big question..
Is it possible after the hack to play games online (like m4u)?
it’s the main reason me to have an 3ds but i want to play the region free games, like
taiko no tatsujin or hatsune miku mirai 1&2.
Smealum only did meantion that the nintendo store is closed cause of the dns change.
pls reply.
You should just setup 2 connections 1 for online and 2 for TubeHax.
Naw, you can’t play anything that requires internet or different reigon eshop access (so MH is out)
As always the question iiiiiiiiiis: Should I update when I am a lucky one with Cubic Ninja and an 3DS on FW4.5?
No!! Stay on 4.5 and get 9.9 EmuNAND!! O.o
How does the region free launcher work? Does this mean I can import Japanese games and run them through this exploit/homebrew launcher?
Yes. you just select “region free” in the menu, then you’re good to go, you can run your imported cartridge
Need a tuto for port other homebrews. Any post?
Sweet. Thanks. Can’t wait to play some games I haven’t been able to due to region lock.
The hack works on my jpn 3DS (9.9.0 firmware), GBA emulator doesn’t work.
Considering my 3DS is now region free, which are the western exclusive games ?
there are western exclusive games for 3DS ????? 😛
okey got it and it work. All other games works fine online.
now the bugs…don*’t close too long your super nintendo emulators or the nyan cat thingy or you have to restart your console. Press the power button till the console restart itself.
You may want to edit the title and correct the name semalum :P, (it’s humanly to make mistakes but the title should be as correct as possible. nice article btw.
Interesting
Would this be able to work with gw?
What about Blargsnes? would it work on New 3ds with sound using this?
I would like to know this as well. Hoping that we can have both working on it.
The exploit runs and install well for both TubeHax and IronHax on the current Emunand 9.9 but so far gameyob and blargsnes don’t seem to run properly on it. At least for me. I always get a black screen.
IT DOES WORK WITH GATEWAY!!!!! 😀
Takes a bit of effort, but I got it working. Can now run the GBA Emu on my N3DS XL. Sadly, there are not that many Emulators out right now. Cant wait for the Virtual Boy Emu to come out and the RetroArch Emulator
Another 2 question. I usually keep the WIFI on my 3ds turned off because I dont want it to download any unwanted updates automatically, how will people go about avoiding this?
Is this something that Nintendo can potentially block out or this a permanent solution for those that dont update anything further. I didnt manage to catch Ironfall before it got pulled 🙁
You can keep your wifi off > turn it on when you want to use homebrew by using youtube > play whatever you want > reboot to main menu > turn wifi off.
Anyways, to use Tubehax you have to use Smea’s personal DNS server which blocks Nintendo’s servers, you can’t access eShop neither download updates while the DNS settings are on, so you don’t even have to worry about that. Confirned by Smea.
ironhax can Run pasta CFW ??
No, this is region free and homebrew only, no piracy.
If you accidentally select the wrong firmware uninstall and reinstall the youtube app, and delete and re-add the homebrew launcher files.
Does this work on Emunand as well?
Well these hacks are good if you jumped to the latest 3ds update in order to go on the eshop or if your running exploited carts in order to spoof the update then grab the game or app. Other than that if your on lower firmware stick to it.
I have an old, european, 9.4 3DS, but even with the correct firmware chosen, is crashes as with every other.
CitrAGB (gpsp) doesn’t seem to be working for me. Has anyone had any success with this one so far?
I got the gba emulator working. You have to create a folder in your memory card and name it gba. Then download the gba bios (Google it) and rename it what they tell you to and place it in the folder. Viola
neh, is not working( on 3ds xl i mean). Red screen on launch and…. freeze. Maybe for New 3ds work, Anyone?
I just got it running with a modified homebrew launcher.
http://gbatemp.net/threads/citragb-3ds-gba-emulator-wip.376438/page-32
Its slow as heck though, not even worth using imo
Mine worked on current firmware for the N3DSXL. Just had to put the bios file in either root or create a folder in root named gba and put bios in there. It works…but most of the games don’t run past 50% speed. Better to just stick with the PS vita/PSP emulator imo.
All I get is a red screen, and I get the same red screen on 3DSGBA. I saw some others talking about it on gbatemp so I guess its an actual issue.
Question: can this be used to run DS homebrew on a 3DS? I see that the ds has interesting looking emulators (c64 and dosbox are the 2 i want)
Hi I get an error when changing dns on 3ds when running connection test any ideas?
Error Code: 003-2103
don’t run the test? just save it and run the youtube app
it is an isp problem
I tethered my phone and it worked fine with that
I got this homebrew app working. Though when I reboot to my home screen and then try to reboot the youhax it fails. I have to pull my SD card out and erase the old homebrew files and put a new copy in then reboot the system and it works fine. Is this just me?
can i run pirated games with this? otherway is ussless..
Someday… maybe… 🙂
it’s not useless.
For the people whio wanted to play exclusive japanese games i’s a dream.
Monster Hunter cross is not announced to come out in Europe or usa,
the the popular drum game taiko no tatsujin. We will never see this Game outside of japan!
The homebrew channel is new in the scene, give it some time.
And the other thing is…why pirate?? the 3ds don’t need to be pirated, the games are cheap if you go on ebay or amazon!!!
does this work on 2ds cause all it does it crash the youtube app for me.
People, Smealum released a fix for the homebrew channel. The boot.3dsx file in the root of your SD card should be updated. I did mine this morning and now I can load GBA emulators and the rest of my homebrew.
https://twitter.com/smealum/status/633480944146448385
I can’t see my nes, snes, and gameboy color emulators help please ;~;
Well done Smealum 😀
But I live in Brazil and I don’t know why my connection don’t reach that IP :/
Is it just me or is the GBA emulation awful? Blargsnes is amazing though
OMO its beautiful with play coin setter no more walking!!!
it does not work for me, i followed the instructions perfectly and youtube still opens normally
How do I fix it? And is there one for Europe because it doesn’t work.
How do I fix this? It didn’t work and I am using Europe 3ds.
Asking questions are truly nice thing if you are not understanding something totally, but this article gives nice understanding yet.
Useful information. Fortunate me I found your web
site accidentally, and I am shocked why this twist
of fate didn’t came about earlier! I bookmarked it.
Very unimpressed so far. It’ll be nice to see when it actually works well enough to actually use. Seems to work about 25% of the time, all other times it hangs up on a blue screen or youtube crashes and resets the system.
For hottest information you have to pay a visit the web and on the
web I found this web site as a best website for most recent updates.
Wonderful post! We will be linking to this particularly great post on our website.
Keep up the good writing.
Fabulous, what a web site it is! This weblog presents useful data to us, keep it up.
