Finally, we’re one step closer to dumping our backups on the Vita. Seeing how the Vita lacks a lot of AAA titles, piracy won’t make much of a difference. Shiet, this is good news tho. I’ve been wanting to dump Fifa 15 to play against my bruh during trips. But for real tho, this is good.

How dare you speak the truth about piracy? you my friend deserve to be banned

    • Jack Attack

Piracy has never made a difference for a platform since the Famicom Disk System. Anyone who says otherwise is completely uneducated about the FACTS. It doesn’t absolve pirates or justify pirates but it DOES JUSTIFY FAIR USE! Which in today’s messed up world, FAIR USE as what it should be is called “piracy”.

Stealing games is wrong no matter what, sure, but the impact is negligible since it’s a EFFECT and SYMPTOM not the cause or disease.

  3. t6uty

Love the “Vita has no games” style photo, LOL.

    First. Yay pirate games todolo

  6. Raul

Mr. Gas commented that it doesn’t work with more than one game at a time.

  7. dyey-em_si

I wonder what’s the firmware version of both vita

  8. John Mission Smith

    I WANT TO BE A PIRATE….. KING!

  9. Wiseguy

Arr’ ya ready kids? Aye aye Captain!

  10. DjAaron

So, what im guessing, pleace correct me if im wrong.
When Mr Gas inserts the cartridge, a certain part of the game gets loaded into memory, and it stays there hence why there’s no error when starting the game after ejecting the cartridge.
Either way, very well done! I love seeing things like this, takes a lot of talent and patience.
Thank you REPREP for the article, Mr Gas for this amazing progress and of course Wololo for this awesome site.

    Well done, gas-san

Thr#e are a lot of more interesting questions to be asked:
Is the Speed of the Game faster on MemCard (eg. loadtimes shorter)
Is the overall Smoothness better? (more responsiveness for example)
Can you shrink the Games on the MemCard (like ISO to CSO) by removing stuff like updates?

    キタ━━━(゚∀゚)━━━!!

  14. nCadeRegal

This is a major step in the right direction., it would be so awesome to be able to just carry around one or two memory cards, then to have to carry around the huge case I have now that only holds 8 games and my vita. I look forward to seeing this developed to a point that the game isn’t required at all for booting said game. I do like the idea of the game share possibility if the other person doesn’t have the game. I run into this problem often when trying to play with my nephew who lives 5 hours from me. Again nice work guys.

  15. Stanislav

    Mr.Gas,i love you,please continue!

  16. Lambda

Mmm… i’m trying to find something practical for this, maybe not right now, but there’s no doubt this is a HUGE step, so congrats to Mr. Gas!!!

So far he managed to install games on the memory, the only thing missing is to recognize the game without inserting the game card? what impresses me the most is how he managed for the vita to recognize a game as being installed, is he missing the “key” within the game card? sorry, don’t know a lot of this and trying to understand

    • Tony

Dumps from a retail game are most likely coded to read from the game slot so i think it wont be possible at all to boot said game without having it inserted until we get a native hack that redirects the game slot to ux0: or some type of breakthrough to allow us to modify said game files.

  17. w00t

is it possible that this could maybe lead to fan translations some day? that´d be pretty awesome :/

  18. lol

Cue lots of noobs not fully reading the article and asking “woohoo can i play isos nows without paying cause im too awesome to pay?”

  19. Freemyvita

    1 Cartridge 2 boots lol ;-p

  20. BIZRKID

so is this like having a untethered jailbreak as long as my vita doesn’t die i can boot the game

  21. 1

It wouldnt be piracy even if you didnt need the cart every time. Its only piracy if you get the game without owning it, or keeping the digital version and selling the physical copy. It could perhaps lead to piracy if this method allowed for such things (as dumping games and selling the afterwards).

    • i wish

Unfortunatly under law, even just dumping your own game u own is breaking the law :/

      • Cypherous

Actually the part that is illegal is the circumvention of copy protection, and seeing as you have to do that to copy it in the first place 😛

      • ahnp

Legally your allowed 1 backup for your own use. It becomes illegal if you share your backup

        • Sky Yuki

          Pretty sure there’s this
“You may only install this game up to 3 PS vita systems”
On the games in the ps store
          So I think it’s 3 games and not 1

  22. win

    first after first!

  23. raw

Could this be used to run games with modified files? Such as Undubs or hacks?

  24. troll

Incredible! I hope this turns into something great!

  25. Second

    Second

  26. BIZRKID

so this is kinda like having a iPhone with a tethered jailbreak as long as the vita stays on/sleep it will boot the game?

  27. SeConD

    FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Patrick

So, theoretically, I could install my physical games to the Vita. Interesting. I like it.

  29. Ace

Quick question..No disrespect here. But I fail to see the point in this if you already have the game in. And all you’re doing is playing it from the vita memory from a dump..So my question is. If you have the physical copy. And it’s not a disk base type of game. Why would you want to do this if it’s not for piracy? Any and all work is appreciated..Just curious. Again no disrespect

    • neoman4426

It’s useful for, say you’ve got multiple devices, with a digital game you can do multiplayer while only owning one copy, but with physical you would need one copy for each device. This allows you to play multiplayer with one cart

    • Jamx

This is actually useful for playing multiplayer on more than one systems but you have only one game card. Since Vita no longer supports Game Sharing feature like PSP did before (3DS also supports game sharing on some games as well), this trick definitely great for multiplayer purposes and possibly useful for earning MP trophies, providing this trick works with latest updates and PSN is able to connect.

  30. marios92

Woha. Anyway i dont understand a step: you can use any cartrige for play backup? For example, if someone install Killzone innto memory card (the dump), i can put Ninja Gaiden as cartridge and play killzone? Or works only with his own cartrige?

  31. deathblade200

this is pointless and would just waste space on the vita we aren’t dealing with umds that actually benefit from being dumped this is obviously just a step towards piracy which the vita does NOT need unless all of you want to see all game development on it dropped and for it to REALLY be dead like everybody has been claiming it is for years….

    • aramaru

piracy or not almost nothing will change, youll just get more control over your device. even more than 10 years since it’s release psp still gets releases, if only in japan, even with all the piracy. whether you get or dont getgame depends on dev interest, which for vita is currently absolutely minimal in west and its unlikely this would change. thus i believe piracy argument on vita is irelevant, on psp its overrated at very least. with vita completely open you have higher chance of getting emulators, ports maybe even unlicenced homebrew games, in the end it’s all about comunity……. so have no fear

    • Nope

Piracy can’t kill what is already dead. Actually, piracy can’t kill ***. You know what had piracy for a while? The 3DS. And look how it is stomping the Vita, despite the Vita being unpirateable (at least for Vita games, which are the ones that matter).

  32. Doodle210

This… this what what I’ve been waiting for. 🙂

  33. Gamegard

Amazing news at least the 50% OF IT …We need others to complete the other 50% 😉

  34. sniperDude

i am not shutting my vita down!!! NEVEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRR !!!

  35. jamski

so I think he points out that you can save a game to your system and maybe find something like a game cd booter somewhat like the dreamcast does to continue playing a game… hmm… quite interesting 🙂

  36. Omar

Ok i might know this trick. I was once trying to play with my vita backups. I downloaded backups from torrent.

So i had uncharted backup from psn working. So i replaced the main game file from the torrent with any other game file and let the other files there i dont remember exactly. So when i launched the game it said insert cartidge of the new game like ninja gaiden. So if i had the cartidge it would have worked. This is useless trick. Guys make your psn game backup, download sone games from torrent, of which you have cartidge. Play with files your game will eventually launch from memory card.

  37. Reeker

Is it possible to do it with PSM app on 3.52? Someone should try

  38. disisgud

This is useful when you have a friend who also owns a vita but you don’t have the same cartridges to play 2player or multiplayer adhoc games. Obviously we don’t want to buy another cartridge for our friends to play with them. Then, they could also do the same for you if they own a game cart that you don’t own.
