Revitalize homebrew competition: Splash screen winners announced
Hey people, sorry it’s taken so long. I’ve been super busy with real life and work recently, so it took me a while to review the splash screen entries for the Revitalize competition.
What is the Revitalize Vita homebrew competition?
Revitalize is an upcoming homebrew competition that we will be running here on wololo.net. Although the details still need to be ironed out, we’ll basically ask people to submit homebrews running on the rejuvenate Vita hack, we’ll have some kind of vote, and cash prizes for the best entries.
First, we needed a Splash Screen
To get first things done first, we needed a cool splash screen for the contest. We’ll basically ask all homebrews to show the splash screen when their application starts. We organized a friendly contest for people to design a splash screen, and we received many, many entries. I was expecting to review maybe a dozen images, but instead we got close to a hundred (I didn’t count, to be honest).
There were an insane amount of really good entries, and it kind of sucks that I had to choose a winner. It took me a good amount of time to narrow it down to 12 entries I really likes, and ultimately, I decided to actually pick 2 winners instead of 1. You will be able to use either ones of these splash screens in your homebrew when the contest starts.
The winners are domthybomb and St3f, respectively for the two following splash screens:
Both winners received a $20 PSN Code, although St3f has asked me to donate the money to childsplaycharity.org instead of sending a PSN code to him, so I did that.
I will follow up soon with full rules for the actual homebrew contest. Give me a few days to finalize the rules and post an update!
Congrats to both winners. I enjoyed the apparent simplicity yet cool design that these 2 entries surface.
Again, there were lots of other great entries. Some others I really liked unfortunately contained the playstation symbols (square triangle circle cross), and to avoid any legal issue I decided to not select any of those, even if some of these really looked great. Overall, many entries looked really professional, and I suggest you have a look at all of them here. Which one was your favorite? I’m personally easily impressed because I suck, really, really bad at any sort of graphic arts, and clearly most people who entered have way better skills than I do.

What!? Are you f-ing kidding me? The guys who should have won are SpaceFolding and St3f.
Both had excellent pieces of art. SpaceFolding made a bubbly render and St3f made a pixel art themed splash screen.
I hope next time we get a poll or something before Wololo decides to select random tasteless ***.

Look, there are 2 winners, you are free to choose either one of them in your homebrew. Since you seem to like St3f’s work better, go with that one.
As I said, there were lots of great entries, and SpaceFolding’s one was in the 12 ones I chose for my final decision.
Personally Inwould t like the job of scrolling all the bloody covers and I bet there would be people that would vote without looking at them all so probably better this way + everyone has their own opinion…

Maybe the day when HE coughs up the prize money, he can choose the winner.
Congrats to the winners! I am upset at myself because I actually edited my submission to add the PS shape symbols, invalidating myself during the very last day. I will stick to the guidelines strictly next time!
I still prefer orangpelupa’s splash screen though. But I guess that’s just my opinion.

The other one is neat too, but I really like the way the pixel art has been done.

Really? There were way better ones than domthybomb’s. all this person did was run a basic font through cinema4d to give it a 3D effect and added a background and some outter glow. Yet some of the actually creative ones didn’t make it.

i particularly liked domthybomb’s creation with its popout 3d effect that makes a bold statement. and a nice contrast to St3f’s work and the pixel art effects. great job guys.
