PSM hack: no rush, make sure to install the PSM Dev App, says Yifan Lu
May 31st has come and gone. It was the deadline for registering an account on Playstation Mobile, and many of us are now anxious to know “what’s next” for Yifan Lu.
PSM Hack: the story
Yifan Lu announced a while ago that people should download the PSM dev assistant and install it on their vita. He also recommended people to get a PSM publisher license. That last step turned out to be tricky: with the increase of publisher license requests, Sony could not catch up with the demand and not everybody got approved. Sony started asking for proof that people requesting the license would actually publish a game, and ultimately stopped approving requests altogether, as they had announced.
Now that nobody can join the PSM program, people are wondering if Yifan Lu will finally “reveal” what this is all about. Although he was not always clear on why he suggested everyone to do that, putting the pieces together is not very difficult, and it seems he has a hack in preparation.
I myself do not know all the details, and I didn’t ask. It’s my philosophy that the less people know about something like that while it’s under wrap, the better. If Yifan wanted to give me more details, he would have given them to me.
What will the PSM hack allow us to do?
Yifan Lu initially said that people should get a PSM Publisher license. Such a license is a prerequisite to test your own apps on your own PS Vita. One could imagine that people could share their PSM Source code with each other, and everyone with a publisher key could compile and run “homebrews” this way. A major issue though is that test publisher keys have a limited validity in time. It’s not a stretch to assume that Yifan Lu has found at least a way to bypass this limitation. This would allow people with a Psm publisher license to compile and run their own code, without having to run through Sony’s approval. Homebrews could be exchanged in source code packages between the lucky PSM publisher licensed. That sounds like it would be a very “niche” use case.
Yifan Lu has however stated a few times now that the PSM Publisher key is not necessary. This implies there is a solution to let people without a publisher key run these tests. I’ll let your imagination work here, but you could imagine anything, from a bug in the PSM Dev App to a way of sharing keys between users without Sony knowing.
This would allow everyone to create PSM apps even after the PSM program is over, assuming people don’t update their Vita (a software patch preventing the PSM Dev App from running is always a possibility)
What sounds odd to me, in that scenario, is the need for a scene Vita SDK (Yifan Lu asked for help on this a few days ago, you can help if you have SDK creation experience and even if you don’t own a Vita). We could, after all, use the PSM SDK as is. In my mind, this points to an additional vulnerability in the PSM engine, which would give us additional access to the Vita. This could, after all, be the awaited release of UVL.
That’s 2 reasons to be excited in my opinion: we could see the rise of PSM specific homebrew, which in itself would be awesome progress for the Vita scene, but also maybe the possibility of deeper access to the Vita internals through a hack in PSM.
When will the PSM hack be released?
I contacted Yifan Lu about his schedule, and we had a quick chat. He said there is no rush at this point, and recommends people to get and install the psm dev app on their Vita. He’s pretty busy this week but we’ll be following up as soon as possible.

First !!!
Wish I could help more now just learning the basics of python. One day I hope to contribute more.
LOL phyton, phyton is for kids, you won’t get too far with phyton, learn C instead
A programming language is only as good as the programmer, of course if you suck as a programer, then any language you use won’t be any good. Sometimes is a matter of taste. I for one love C. But sometimes I have to get out of my comfort zone and use Java, C# or C++. No web-oriented languages for me ._.
If Python is for kids then so is Java, C# and most of C++. And everyone at NASA and Dropbox are kids.
Lol
PSM is on C#…
We’ll, if you’re new to programming, Python is a good choice for a beginner, you probably then want to move on with C, you should try the Head First book series, there’s one about python (Head First Programming) and one for C (Head First C).
There’s also books for Java, C#, JavaScript, HTML, PHP, etc which are part of these series. They’re really good at teaching you the inner workings of the languages and also teach you good practices.
I’m sure you didn’t even read the article.
Probably not. Haha.
I’m so excited !!
Kind of pointless post
kind of pointless comment
Kind of funny snapback comment
cant wait, btw will it allow piracy?
DONT TELL ME YIFAN LU IS AGAINST PIRACY!
What part of homebrew don’t you understand….
I think probably the whole article.
u dont understand my question……..or maybe i didnt ask it the proper way
remember consoles which once got homebrew allowed piracy 😀
thats what i asked….or meant
will the vita native homebrew allow piracy? 😀 😀 😀 😛 😛 😛
if you consider emulation is piracy, then it is.
no it won’t allow piracy, another exploit has to be found to allow that
God you are so stupid, you people will be the reason legal backups probably won’t come from whatever this is.
ur just acting as if u are against piracy, in real, u urself are a thief trying to pirate games 😀
No ***, for example, ripping the game cart to PC, or Vita. One of my games has been chewed by the dogs and having a backup would have been aces.
I don’t care about piracy, I have a job, and I don’t live in a 3rd world country.
Pretty xenophobic your reply. God bless murica.
Ps.: I live in a “third world country” and I don’t resort to piracy.
LamE
oh yeah I purchased all the vita games released till now, I stored all that in my personal van and last night my van crashed with a truck and I lost all my games :p
hahahahaha
Sure it will but whats there to pirate
nothing…………….except old games which have been remade in hd like metal gear solid collection etc. 😀
no use of purchasing it again as i arleady know the story and have played it on other consoles!
i deserve it for free :p
You deserve ?
Yeah… All the re-releases coming out, are just money grabs ….. NO
Been waiting for an update on this. Glad to hear something and I am patiently awaiting word on the next step to hopefully a Vita with its full potential, i.e. a SNES emulator running through the Vita, not the PSP hidden in it.
That would be pretty pointless, considering the PSP is pretty well capable of running SNES games. But yeah, hopefully we’ll get something soon. I actually think it would be cool if we could crack the PSP emulator open even more. Like re-enabling 64MB to be used as opposed to only 32MB and stuff like that. But native homebrews would be really cool too.
Hm, I have no idea why a Vita-native SNES emulator would be pointless. Yes, SNES emulation on the PSP is very good, but it’s not perfect (Donkey Kong Country for example doesn’t run perfectly for example) and besides that due to the missing Media Engine on the ePSP, the emulation on a Vita is a bit slower than on a normal PSP.
Enabling 64MB ram seems to be pointless though, because the Vita has a ”little bit” more power than a PSP anyway.
Why should be that pointless? For all emulators: 1. Native resolution of the Vita display, no bad upscaling 2. More power for better emulation and graphic filters 3. all Input devices of the Vita could be used 4. Emus of devices for that the PSP is too slow are possible.
I want to play the Amiga Turrican games on my Vita, but the PSP Emu is too slow for a good Amiga emulation and so this games runs really bad on it.
“a SNES emulator”
Surely you jest, my good Majin?
We have much in the way of SNES emulators…on consoles several generations afore the PS Vita.
The time of the Atari draws nigh!
@Wololo
It seems that Yifan Lu is entitled get the bounty/reward of the Vita native exploit that you talked about before. 🙂
Yup, definitely, but waiting for proof/release before this happens.
How do u install the PSM dev app past the end date? Or is it not possible?
The general method requires that you have a PS3 and a PS Vita on which you can use the Package Installer trick. I found a post somewhere here in the forums about it. Basically you use Charles proxy to trick your PS3 into downloading the PSM Dev app and then install it on your Vita. Then you use Package Installer to install the update for it. One thing I didn’t see mentioned is that you need to get the PSM Dev app in your download list first by going to the Sony developer website and clicking the download link for it while you’re signed in. I’m not sure if it’s still possible but hopefully it is. Google around for the rest of the story, I’m sure it’s not hard to find.
I’m on latest versions on both ps3 and PS vita can I still do it?
I’ll send Yifan nude pics until he finishes. This should speed up the process 10 fold.
I’d imagine that’d slow him down since he needs to personally admire them.
The combination of your name and that comment is too much! XD
It will take him the amount of time he takes to ejaculat* into the number of pics
Hey i’ve got the first version psm dev app on my vita, should i update or it work with the first..
Does the app run? If it does you’re probably fine. I had to update mine before it would run at all though.
Thankfully, it didn’t do the firmware check when updating the app. Just connect to the internet, select the refresh icon by the app, and the update button should appear. Update (and then switch back to airplane mode) and the app should run fine.
Of course, you can’t do anything with the app yet, but that’ll be coming soon.
It’s 4 days past the deadline.
Yifan is stalling.
Suspense is killing me 🙁
I love you Yifan!!
“It’s my philosophy that the less people know about something like that while it’s under wrap, the better.”
Your absolutely right about that but I still wish if I knew what was happening… How could you resist asking Yifan??? Your most likely a saint of some sort to have that kind of patience
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
Conclusion:
I contacted Yifan Lu about his schedule, and we had a quick chat. He said there is no rush at this point, and recommends people to get and install the psm dev app on their Vita. He’s pretty busy this week but we’ll be following up as soon as possible.
Touche.
Do u think he should have only posted that conclusion part?
U know what, ur brain is the same as a donkeys brain :p
That much typing would have been boring article and no one would have read that
cool
So, we don’t need to have a licence, just the Dev app?
Yep.
“Unity for PSM” or “PSM SDK” ? tell me
PSM SDK.
Thanks buddy 🙂 By the way do you think that this hack also needs a game exploit or it is a game exploit -free ?
Latest News:
This hack will require you to run a xbox one game on your ps vita, gta v with 100fps
If u have done that pm me and I will tell u the next step to hack your beloved vita 😛
To be honest, I don’t understand anymore. *confused* 😀
Hey, should I install the lastest ps vita version? I am on 3.18(I think). I haven’t used my vita since 4 months.
Edit: PSM Dev app is available in my download list.
Plz reply fast 🙁
I will try to install it using the ps3 on OFW and charles proxy trick today, Hope this leads to something good like a homebrew channel for vita, or a way to run linux on it, that would be sweet. in a completely unrelated news, you guys with a 3DS should be watching the scene right now is advancing incredible fast. (CFW with region free is coming for FW below 9.2)
By the way do you think that this hack also needs a game exploit or it is a game exploit -free ?
cant wait to start playing n64 games on my vita and possibly we can start porting pc games too
Can’t wait for Crysis on my PS vita !!!
Me 2, cant wait for crysis 4 on vita 1080p 60fps :p
Sorry for if it’s a stupid question, but how do I install the dev app on my vita? I just installed PSM Studio on my PC , what do i do from there?
Got to this address on your Vita’s browser, I think (don’t quote me on that) that you already have to be registered in the PSM Dev program.
http://bit.ly/psmdevapp
Can someone make a media player for vita with this ? Need .mkv support .
Hey, sorry for this, but I need help! I tried to go to the page with my Vita, but when I click in the download link it only points me to a PStore page that doesn’t has a ‘Download’ buttom! What do I do??
Hi guys. I would appreciate if someone please answers these questions:
1.Can I still download the app?(If yes how much time do I have?)
2.Is it safe to update to 3.51 for this hack (does the hack work on 3.51?) or is it better to manually update to 3.50 and use the queue trick?(Does it(queue trick) even work?)
p.s: I have a vita on 3.18 and I can’t have an access to a PS3.I have registered in the PSM Dev program and PSM SDK is in my download list.
1) yes
2) you need a ps3 to transfer psm app to versions below 3.51
if you really want this hack and you dont use your psp-tn-ark-whatever that much you can just update to latest version and get the psm dev assistant
thank you so much I would probably update to 3.51 then.
People need to get off their high horse.
Yes it would be nice to have full access to vita’s potential, but all everyone really wants is to pirate.
Even if Yifan Lu doesn’t approve of it, it will eventually happen.
and yes, im a proud pirate. arrrrrrr.
Yeah, I think the same because with my phone I can already run whatever software I might want, watch videos and so on, and it’s much portable than the handheld.
I don’t have any problem to admit that I only want this “hack” with pirate purposes.
Considering how the first model of the PSVita is considered a “legacy” platform, I would not mind it being fully exploited. I do not like the thought of pirated games, but this hack will inevitably lead to it. I just hope this will not kill the entire platform.
thank you so much Yifan Lu
I really hope we get a dosbox emulator out of this. I got elder scrolls: arena to run on my psp at about 5fps. If the vita gives me 30 fps I will be in heaven.
I am not sure if it will lead to Vita piracy as from my readings PSM is sandboxed just like the PSP EMU so we won’t have access to the Vita side that runs retail games. Theynever found a hack to get out if the PSP sandbox and probably will not find one from PSM.
If they do find an entry point from the PSM sandbox Vita piracy would be possible then but I think this is just for homebrew apps and emulators to be developed that can have more of the Vitas raw power.
I have been installing the PSM Dev app on folks here locally using my CFW PS3 to install the app and I have the 1.14 update for those 3.30 and below and the 1.15 update for those on 3.50 and above.
I must not be the only one who’s noticed… every time someone comes here and (idiotically) asks for piracy, they never seem to understand basic English or spelling… what’s the deal with that?
true man. Or they use their feet to communicate online instead of their hands. I’ve never actually used my feet to type, I will have to try it.
Dont, ur keyboard will rott because of the stink
That’s ’cause all us pirates of convenience/demoing are smart enough to wait quietly. (Which isn’t necessarily the same as waiting patiently, mind you.) ;P
I have to say those pirates your referring to are most likely dropouts living off the welfare and just sit at home doing nothing but gaming and talking trash on xlive or psn. The worst thing is there’s too many of them like this and they’re hard headed *** choose not to want to learn a damn thing. Going to a library for starters could help with just picking up on simplified learning of the English language. Seriously take a break from the sodas and fps gaming and take your brain for a jog at a book store at least.
Gosh, I’m still on 3.xx and I’m super anxious to update it, even though I haven’t used it in like, 4 months. I don’t want to lose my GBA emulator! D:
I own every vita game i want,
im just hoping for a proper ps2 emulator one day
even on my 24 gb RAM gaming laptop pcsx2 is far from flawless
so i doubt that vita will handle it better, if i understand correctly vita also has a Cell35 system just as ps2 so maybe its an advantage? Anyone knows let me know
i have 8GB Ram and ps2 emu works at 100 fps
Yes, FLAWLESS
no phuking way josé. 100 fps lol isnt it 60 fps 🙂
Does anyone knows if there is a way to get the dev app with a Vita on the last firmware without needing a PS3 with CF D: ?
Well it would never let me get my license thing and it won’t let me download the app either. Can someone point me in a better direction.
I never got the damn license but I managed to install the PSM Dev app. I just registered as a PSM Developer, and then went here on my Vita’s browser:
http://bit.ly/psmdevapp
Hey, how did you register?? Each time I try, it gets stuck in the ‘Sign Up’ window, it just keep showing me the grayed out buttom D=
I registered around a week before May 31st.
I got the license, but when I try to generate a key, it says entitlement check failed when I log into the PSM Publishing Utility. I have installed the app on my vita and everything too. Anyone have this problem?
amazing if port ppsspp (psp emulator) to psm =D
What. Why would you even do that on a device with native PSP support?
So, could users just share the Dev/publisher keys though? Is there anything in place to stop that?
