Nintendo’s NX platform will use an Android OS (Rumor)
(Update: As many of you had correctly guessed, the rumor has been confirmed to be false by a Nintendo spokesperson. “There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX,” a Nintendo spokesman said. Source Wall Street Journal)
Today, a post by duckroll at NeoGAF claimed Nintendo’s next platform (Nintendo NX) will use an Android OS. The post points to an article at Nikkei about Nintendo’s partnership with DeNA.
It has been sometime that we heard about “NX”, next-gen hardware of Nintendo. Nintendo says it will be a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept. It has been speculated that it will be a combination of a console and a handheld. Given with collaboration of Nintendo with DeNA for smart apps/games, this rumor might be true so that Nintendo might use a customized version of Android OS on their next-gen hardware.
Even if Nintendo uses Android OS, it will probably be a heavily customized version. It might have its own store and application compatibility list. At this point, these are just assumptions, but given the rampant piracy on Android OS, Nintendo should take extreme precautions if they don’t want day 1 piracy on “NX”.
My opinion for this choice is on the positive side. The insider source of this info emphasizes the lack of third party support on Wii-U and says this caused the turning point in the company. I totally agree with the decision. A more flexible platform like Android might just be what “NX” needs to regain the attraction from third parties. It might also help to remove the borders between handhelds and consoles with a unified OS.
I would like to hear your opinions about this in the comment section below.
Seems….cool to me, but still on the fence about this….would this radically change the them and make more money…sure, but would it make their quality of games more better? I dunno…just, very skeptical about this…
Then again, you’re right about it being much more positive than it sounds…A more unified OS would definitely make it much more attractive to third party developers, and while the Wii-U is on the rise since it’s slump after it’s release, this could really boost Nintendo…
Just…feel skeptical…
Let’s wait and see. Hope we can get the Nintendo quality games with the bonus of extra flexibility of an android based OS.
I think it’s a very bad idea… Like Nvidia with the SHIELD…
For exemple, on the SHIELD, there’s Portal and HL. If I go on Aptoide, I can download these games on my Android tablet/phone, and for free! So, if we just need to download an APK to get Mario Kart 9 or Zelda HD Remaster (that’s just exemples!), nobody gonna buy this platform!
Just what we need, another Android gaming device to play candy crush.
S.T.U.P.I.D.
F#ck off
This.
Highly improbable that Nintendo would choose ***-droid for its system too.
Heard about pspemu on android? 🙂
PPSSPP sucks on android. If it lags on Tegra then it will DEFINETLY lag on Nintendo. For years they haven’t cared about leading innovation. They’re all out of ideas. They never try to be better for the sake of being better.
TASTY!
Nintendo is going to bankrupt.. yay.
That would be awesome. I love android and nintendo. Even though i am a Sony fan boy. Nintendo hasn’t been the same since the GameCube era so it would be nice to see them get back into the game. Currently i own a psp 3001, psp go, ps vita, ps3, and retro 3ds xl. 2 words to say about this partner ship Bring It
Am I the only one who sees the negative in this? The ONLY upside I could possibly see is that it would make the virtual console experience easily the best one ever due to the fact that there are 20 million emulators for all of Nintendo’s Backlog of Consoles… Not to mention pretty much everything else Wii Emulates with VC… Its not like Playstation consoles being based on FreeBSD, or Xbox being based on Windows 8/.1/10, this is Android, and the implications for security are pretty nil… I can totally see within the first month the NX getting “Rooted”. Then what? We will have all the homebrew and piracy we want, but then We will have a worse-than-wii U situation to where Devs will stay away for reasons of insecurity OR we will have 100 different Candy Crush/Clash of Clans clones, while still being able to play Super Mario World…
Yeah, Android is a system that never attracts developers due to piracy. No big names ever support the platform at all.
/sigh
You are an idiot
One, there’s no reason for trolling/uncalled for name calling and the likes…
two, Actually no, Sure you have Resident Evil 6 coming to Android, but the games that people associate with big consoles, the mainstream Call of Duty’s, the big numbered Madden’s, the tourney level Street fighters, none of the big AAA titles are coming at all to Android platform. Android currently is getting hyped for a big release of Metal Gear Rising… and thats even on the Shield Platform. You wont see (any time soon) Black Ops III on a console. Of course we know there are other good games on systems and none of those games are the only big games on systems… but come on, the biggest games coming to Android, are ports of games from last year, and two years ago that were AAA (or maybe AA?) EXCEPT for games that are streaming to the console. So yes, I stand by my point, no big names really support the platform with real games
As the guy said above, you’re an idiot. Android is the most popular mobile OS out there right now. Most popular OS means more developers already familiar with the framework and more developers familiar with the framework means more support for the console with both games and apps. If you knew anything at all you’d also realize that there are easy countermeasures against piracy that many apps currently use such as license verification, server side checks for transactions and checks to make sure your device is not currently rooted. Sure there are apps that counter such measures but most apps do a good job making it more trouble than it’s worth to get the app/game for free.
haha.. no, they could just rip-out detection code from an app/game.
“most apps do a good job making it more trouble than it’s worth to get the app/game for free”. Never said it was impossible.
Besides, this version of Android will obviously be heavily modified. I’m sure it won’t be as easy to decrypt the .apk’s as the ones from the play store are.
Super Mario World Free-to-play, Zelda Free-to-play, donkey kong Free-to-play..
Wow.. that sounds even worse than usual F2P craps from indie devs.
all im hearing is negative remarks android is a games dream come true. to the people hateing on android ( clearly you havent reached the full capibilites of your device) the merge would be awesome
if anything it would boost sales and maybe get them out of the funk they have been in for years
You guys keep thinking that Android as a whole is negative for gaming, its really not, hence why I invested in the Shield Android TV, and various other Android gaming devices… however outside of Borderlands, Modern Combat 5 (Which I love btw), and Metal Gear Rising, what real console game thats current do I have to play on it? Its never gonna replace any of my big 3 right now, and with Android at the helm, Even with Googles now-psuedo mainstream focus, I don’t see any way that Android as a whole can be a viable platform for what a console today needs to be viable and successful. Like it or not, Xbox and Playstation’s and even Nintendo’s recent strategies work. Thats what gets the EA’s, the Activision’s, the Square-Enix’s developing those new games. Whether you play them or not, Kingdom Hearts, Madden, God of War, Smash Bros, they sell systems, Nvidia has literally no games of its own, but the hardware is freaking amazing. And although in my opinion my Shield TV has got to be vastly more powerful than my Wii U, Shield TV will never have a Bayonetta… if Nintendo took it on, I may see a Mario Kart, or Smash Bros again, however what user is going to really buy a new Android Console for Nintendo’s Premium, that does the same thing their Galaxy Tab does… I stand fully by this is not a good thing for Nintendo. Nintendo DOES need a reboot, Nintendo DOES need to get itself together, but Android is way too open for it to be the boost Nintendo needs. This would benefit Gamers yes, there is no denying that, but this does not make BUSINESS sense.
that make this easy target for hacking
Sooner or later every device gets hacked. I personally do not believe choosing Android OS as base will make “NX” more susceptible to piracy.
Heh more like day one rooting overclocking custome Roms and porting the nx is to other phones lol also might get ps4 remote play XD like some phones get via hacks like my s5
port apk to other phones.. lol
done, none buying NX anymore.
nintendo is going bankrupt.. they deserve it.

Breaking News: Nintendo NX hacked, only one single hour after official release!
Nah, it will be Dead on Arrival, hacker will steal one sample from game show and hack it.. LOL
i WANT a nintendo smart phone or nintendo tablet.
i would so buy it
I think it be very popular and nintendo may have a chance to make some profit. I’d buy 1 for sure
Imagine a game device with 500ppi Screen Amoled or IPS, Gorilla Glass 3, with SmartPHONE capabilities (u can now call or text on your device),and builtin Joystick. NOT BAD
To all who saying bad against NX. F@CK 0FF fan boys
If it had piracy only Nintendo would be making games for it. I wonder if it could be rooted.
Probably wouldn’t even need to make homebrew when we could use .apk as homebrew
For all we know the release of the n3ds could have been a test to see if people were willing to buy a product they already own with slight improvements. The data they gathered must’ve proved it was very profitable to take this approach and they are probably using those funds as a safety net incase the release of the official nintendo smart phone or tablet flops and if it doesn’t, rinse and repeat. In a few years they will probably release another nintendo smartphone revision with further improvements. I’m not usually an early adopter but the n3ds was an exception however in my opinion this is quite exciting and I want to see where nintendo goes with this considering that I don’t have a tablet and my smartphone is now 4 years old.
Look all of you are looking at this the wrong way with the “hacking” deal.. lets take a trip down memory lane for a sec, Playstation Then xbox were the first consoles that really had a “visual” firmware that the hacks that you put in would stay on the system and change the look and feel of how the console operated..they got all patched up over the years (somewhat). Which in turn made the “console” MORE secure in the long run.. now here we have xbox going off of what they have been learning in WINDOWS OS to make their console “MORE” secure, Same goes for playstation with Their “linux” version. nintendo DOESN’T have really a designated OS that they take code from AFAIK. BUT they are working on it.. Android on the other hand (CLP > AKA: Custom Linux for your Phone) has had patch here patch there But really most people tend to develop on the “cheaper” side for android . So they really have HAD no reason to bump security up in the “APP” setup that they use. BUT when they DO have a GOOD reason to raise security they will. So i don’t really understand on what console makers are SOO worried about having a console that people can “hack”. More people that hack a console the more “problems” they will find in their code so the FINAL OUT COME IS.. A secure console because at SOME point the code will be so well written that it would not allow any code to be run with out “permission”. END OF STORY!
(P.S.> Alot of people develop for android because the fan base, the mobility, common operating system for a BUNCH of devices, etc etc..
They are NOT scared because of the “PIRACY”, Unlike with “Gaming” consoles they DO NOT rely on the Company that makes the devices to keep THEIR data out of peoples hands that didn’t pay. SAME GOES FOR WINDOWS AND LINUX. Rather they put in THEIR OWN “Systems” in pace to keep said from happening..)
Probably be an upgraded Wii u with a remote controller like nividia shield the Android part will probly be an emulator. Or it be jus a android box like alienware but with a controller like the Wii u remote. Would still be cool. Since Wii u was jus a next gen Wii.
I remember this guy that went buy “duckroll’ back in the late 90s. He used to frequent the ZSnes IRC channel. I wonder if it’s the same guy?
I think this will be a really good thing for Nintendo. Yes, there always the chance of someone hacking the device. Yes, there a chance of illegal activity to happen on this new platform. There a bunch of stuff that “Could” happen to it but the main thing is that almost none of these will reduce their sales of the platform. People love stuff that can be hack even if they don’t really know what the hack means to the user end. What may happen is that they will have a Cat/Mouse chase like how sony is doing with this scene. The only thing different is that it won’t only be nintendo searching for bug and exploit to fix in there system, It will be the whole Android community(Excluding does who don’t want to or can do). That a big positive in my book if i was the owner of the company.
Also like someone else said, Android as a base means that they can potentially support native android games/app and have a wider developer community that can make new stuff for their device without paying them. This is always a good thing.
In overall, I can see a lot of good coming out of this. More than what could go wrong with this. Of Course this is all presuming that Nintendo implements it correctly and does a good job doing this. If they do it correctly, I may be the first one at the front door to get one. xD
That’s a fake : http://mynintendonews.com/2015/06/02/nintendo-says-the-nx-wont-use-android/
“There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX,” a Nintendo spokesman said.
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/06/02/will-nintendos-nx-adopt-android-company-says-no/
If this rumor is true the console is dead
Yes, as people have pointed out, this has just been confirmed fake. https://twitter.com/ReRepRep/status/605781195167690752
Android would have been an incredible fail if Nintendo really had gone with it. Ever since the NDS (DS/DSL/DSi/DSiXL/DSiLL) and the first Wii, Nintendo has seriously beefed up their security.
Justin Nightingale (dev behind the (AWESOME) Sticky Study flashcard apps on iOS) had told me via twitter(?) that the reason he doesn’t release on Android is due to rampant piracy. Makes no sense for Nintendo to seriously consider that route.
I’m not saying IOS is immune to piracy threats– its just that piracy on Android is like a moped through the park in comparison. Ridiculously uncomplicated.
(And yes, I am aware this rumor was confirmed to be false)
Nintendo hasn’t beefed up their security ie letter bomb hack, sky and gateway flash cards. Same goes for Sony with with each new firm ware, and Microsoft. If their is a way to hack it someone will find a it. With that being said and this android/nintendo project being a rumor (big disappointment) Android is the way to the future of mobile gaming hopefully home console as well.
Agreed, even though it is a rumor, using a more flexible OS should be the way to go for dedicated gaming devices.
I think Nintendo and positively might do good and I here come planning and come on that’s kids complain u guys need to be positive if not you’re a five years old grow up
