New piracy technique on PS4 in Brazil confirmed to be real, Sony might take legal action
We’ve revealed a few weeks ago that some electronic stores in Brazil were advertising a way to copy pirate video games onto your PS4 for a fee. Although the technique was not described in details (these stores wanted, after all, to make a profit out of the scheme, not share it for everyone to get it for free, or for Sony to patch it), we’ve been in touch with several members of the hacking scene, as well as customers of these stores, who have all confirmed the existence of the “hack”.
PS4 Hack for piracy confirmed to be real
Yesterday, journalists at UOL Jogos, a trusted site in Brazil, have confirmed that the hack is real, as they have verified it themselves on a test console (original article, in Portuguese, can be found here). It needs to be emphasized that this is not the well known “account sharing” trick, but a new kind of hack.
Small electronics store in some streets of Sao Paulo will charge from R$ 300 to R$ 400 (about $100 to $150) in order to install 10 pirated games on your console. The UOL journalists have confirmed the hack to work on their own console.
The process, as described by Brazilian modchip stores, is close to what we have explained before: a Dump of a “legit” console with a dozen games on it is performed, and copied to the target console. In addition to a copy of the hard drive, it is safe to assume a dump of the NAND/BIOS is performed as well. It seems the dump is performed with the help of a regular raspberry pi, as this had been implied the first time we uncovered this story.
The process described on UOL is extremely similar to what has been described on the scene, and as we reported here. Activate a PS4 for a given account, make a full copy of its state/NAND, deactivate it, then copy the backed-up NAND again. UOL mentions however that in their experiment, their console ended up with 2 registered accounts, which are part of the cloning process, and required for the games to work.
A new way to pirate PS4 games, a lucrative business
Other ways have existed for pirates in the past: Sony lets people activate several consoles on the same account, so some people abuse that system by sharing accounts with their friends. This piracy technique remains limited as you can only share an account with a limited number of consoles. This new technique, however, has virtually no limit to how many PS4s could replicate the games. As such, this is a very lucrative business for these electronics shop, who make close to 100% profit on this technique.
These shops in Brazil charge about $100 to install 10 games. These games would cost almost $600 normally. This is a great deal for both the client and the seller. To get more games, one has to come back to the store and pay roughly $15 for each additional game. UOL mention that with 10 games of the current generation, your PS4 hard drive is pretty much full anyway, so you’ll have to erase a few ones to add new ones.
The article on UOL mentions that the hack initially originated on a Russian site. Given what I’ve been told so far though, it could literally have originated from anywhere, as it is heavily inspired from a similar technique on the PS3 that is widely known. It could be one of those “not so secret” secrets of the scene.
As we’ve discussed before, this is not really what could be considered as a PS4 Jailbreak, and of minimal interest from a homebrew perspective. It is still interesting however, from my point of view, to confirm once again that a system is as secure as its weakest link. Although no encryption is broken here, pirates are still able to find their way, while us “homebrewers” are left in the cold.
Sony already taking legal action in Brazil
Sony are not totally ignoring the issue of piracy in Brazil. It seems they are aware of the “account sharing” technique (and how some stores are monetizing it) and already sending cease and desist notices about that. It is safe to assume they will at least do the same for this new piracy technique, and will probably be looking into ways to patch the hack. As a reminder, people on the PS4 hacking scene have told us that the technique they knew about has been patched on 2.51, so it seems the technique used by Brazilian stores is slightly different from that.
As always, we will be keeping our PS4 Jailbreak page up to date with the latest PS4 Jailbreak news, so you can be aware as soon as a valid technique exists that doesn’t solely rely on the greed of a few pirates.
Thanks to everyone who pointed out the UOL Jogos article, too many of you guys to give proper credit at this point!

first
But you are last in our hearts
Eu sou Brasileiro, E SIM EU TEHO UM PS4 DESBLOQUEADO.
I´M BRAZILIAN, AND YES I HAVE A PS4 JAILBREAK MADE IN SAO PAULO.

it’s like a tv show. To stop piracy don’t talk about it.
It doesn’t work that way.
To stop it, they can simply ban the shop’s PSN account because it does online every they install game to get the license. Or they can simply limit the number people can deactivate their console, like “once a week”, or “once a month”. lol
see, it’s easy to destroy these disgusting businesses. lol
Blocking features to worlwide users in order to stop a few pirates isn’t the best way to do it.
Do you really think restricting millions of fans legit use of a feature is an easy option to stop 2-3 stores from doing do this? I don’t think so.
I believe there are some limitations to activations and deactivations now.
Sony will do what it must to protect the integrity of PS4 and PSN. These stores are stealing and should be shut down.
So much ignorance, all that these Brazillian shopkeepers have done is manufacture copies of their own to sell to others for a fee.
So they are selling prints.
But the market for prints is not free in this supposedly free world. The Brazillians by doing so, they breach on the limited time printing monopoly held by game publishers. These publishers have a state-granted exclusive privilege to manufacture these particular prints for a period of what is originally 14 years.
So when people use words like “steal” or “theft”, they’ve drank the koolaid.
Look up “Rick Falkvinge the copyright monopoly stands in direct opposition to property rights”
Its not easy like this.. the account that installed the games its not online.. and users dont have the password to go online or they whould just download the new games without the need to go to the store.. the account will only go online to download the games nothing more, then you use your own account
one of my accounts on the ps4 is banned, but I could still play the games on my new account.

Cool. Might get a vita tv soon. Or vita.
no one cares about vita anymore. vita is dead.
Um… No it is NOT!
yes it is….Mobile Gaming is the in thing now….Gone are the days of handheld gaming…
Cool. Might get a vita tv soon. Or vita.
$15 for every additional game? what a rip-off.
Also it’s inconvenient to bring PS4 to shops everytime you need a new game.. lol
disgusting.
In a country where new games cost $60 and their prices start dropping a couple of months later, sure, it’s a rip-off.
But it attracts a lot of interest when new games cost from $70 (Witcher 3) to $83 (most big publishers), stay in that range for at least six months (Ubisoft being the notable exception – their games are usually 50% cheaper at this point), and people earn on average half to a quarter of what an average American citizen makes in wages. And that’s not talking into account that the consoles themselves cost at least double the price, or even more if you’re going through the official distribution channels.
In that scenario, $15 is almost too good to be true. I actually expected these stores to charge $30 or so.
Did you know that not all the world have the great economy which one USA has?
Lmao this happens because the game publishers dont understand that they just cannot try to sell their games at the same price over all countries. And regardless thats what they do, and then good ppl helps each other, and bum! Piracy born.
You mean the usa wich ecoonomy is in an irreversible decline and where the dollar is in the intensive care unit? The usa that makes money out of litteraly thin air with it’s bogus and fraudulent petrol fiat dollar? Man, your usa is about to turn into a 4th world country. It is about to return to the gutter where it came from in the first place.
In AU it’s legal to mod chip region-locked devices right?
It’s legal, but the PS4 isn’t region locked so….
Hacking and piracy, which comes from hacking, is one thing. But people who exploit a system and even monetize it like that are awful. Things like that only lead to the possibility, that Sony or other publishers cut the possibility to share licences on three devices completely next time.
There’re a couple of smarter techniques that don’t require a teensy board or raspberry pi to pirate games on ps4. The actual trick those brazilians apparently haven’t learned is how to keep their mouths shut about it. I personally know how to play backups on ps3 300x(no ode), vita, ps4 but I’ma keep it all to myself/ only idiots are after getting fame.
..and now to your left you will see a flying pig fly past your window
***.
if you do business with it, inevitable for people to learn about it and spread into public.
if you use it for youself, none care, Sony doesn’t care even if they know, as one person is hardly a threat.
It’s impossible to keep such a thing down the radar if you sell it. In order to sell it, you need it to be advertised anyway. Wherever it would have happened, it would have gone public, nothing specific to Brazilians.
Sure you do…
It’s still limited use with backups or pointless if no problem buying games, but if you said knew how to run unsigned code, then you might seem valid if true.
@snk117 yeah of course. why you then dont shut your mouth? lol
Piracy is Good , because Publishers are sc*** us with all the DLC and SeasonsPass , if the hack is real , i’ll hack my PS4 because i can’t stand Publishers giving us crappy games with less content
Piracy is a Way to tell them F U , i want the best of my Games and i want all the content DAY 1
i hope Piracy will be available on Xbox One and Wii U too
Amazing news brief we’ll know to make it in our home. I hope
So is it time to buy a PS4 now?
Not yet. wait for a little bit more.. ^_^ im sure soon enough psvita and ps4 will be hacked! 😀
I don’t have anything against downloading games, but charging people so that they can “pirate” games just crosses the line. Hope these buffons are shut down. If your going to promote “pirating”, at least don’t charge for it. You’ll only hurt yourself.
yee
PS4 jailbreak.
Hey, @wololo, where’s Wagic gone from the bar at the top of the site (you know, “Home, /Talk Forums, Downloads, Deals, [etc.]”)? I know the address is still wololo.net/forum, but how are people supposed to get to it easily now?
Hack not good!
k its guaranteed some sort of device will come out in the following months, most likely some ethernet dumping system like its rumored… so yeah piracy will run as always and homebrew will be sc*** once again.
Also stop calling it a jailbreak, its not a jailbreak, its not running unsigned code. its a hack simple.
man i love checking wololo site everyday for newz
I’m from Brazil, told you all it was real!!!
Just a correction, 10 games cost around $100 in the US, this is BRland, the land of the $2K PS4, remember? Games here may go from 160 to almost 300 BRL, divide that by 3, prices are not the same, so yeah.
You kidding? 2 AAA games = like $120 at $59.99
He wrote that wrong, he meat 1 game is $100, 10 games would be $1000
uh not everyone buys games day 1, wait a little and price reduces then buy it.
He must be talking about indies
gooood news wololo and good job , Im from Algeria , and i hope that this technique could be learned in our country soon !
Well, as I said, people were too eager to dismiss the hack just because of the raspberry pi picture.
I myself was really doubting it, and i did mention the source and couldn’t believe something like this could come from brazil, much less from portugal, apparently it didn’t come from either, but again you were right, but hey as soon as the usual channels started confirming which were a few hours after your set of posts, I believed it, just didn’t know the proportions.
Can’t wait to get mine!
The originals are too expensive, pirated is the way to go.
I easly see this to spread more than the PS3 Jailbreak, people will care less about playing online since it stopped to be free as it used to be.
Brazil is not a colony of Japan
I want this… but i dont want fly to brasil…
The PS4 Plus 10 alredy installed game are been selling for around $700 in MercadoLivre ( Something like Ebay )
So it’s cost officially right now rere around $530 to $620 aprox. Price.
unofficially around $450 – $ 500. For 10 Piracy game it’s a well profit for then.
Peoples who don’t know about piracy method will enjoin
