Is your PS Vita Memory Card getting too small? What size is your next Vita memory card going to be?
When the PS Vita was introduced in 2011, Sony announced (of course) a new proprietary memory format to go with it. We gamers have learned to hate Sony’s memory cards because they are vastly overpriced, but I assume this is how Sony makes up for the losses when selling the device.
Vita Memory Stick – what’s the best size for your needs?
The typical issue, for every gamer, is that their first PS Vita Memory card soon runs out of space (still amazed at how fast my 4GB was filled, given that I barely use the console… I guess being a PS+ user and compulsively downloading every. single. free. game. on PS+, even those I don’t play, is part of the problem… Escape Plan is more than 2GB, Killzone Mercenary adds a nice 3.5GB to that, etc…), and then comes the time to buy another one.
Will you go with the level just above yours? You were fine with 4GB until last month, so 8GB should last a bit, right? Or are you the type to decide it’s high time you bought the biggest one? Your choice will depend on how soon you expect to fill the additional space, and how fast the price decreases in the meantime. Honestly, it’s not an easy choice. Moving forward, I’ve decided to go on a “price per GB” type of decision (these are the price in the US, at the time of writing this article):
Size | Price | Price per GB |
4GB | $13.00 (Amazon) $9.00 (eBay) |
$2.25 ~ $3.25 |
8GB | $19.95 (Amazon) $14.99 (eBay) |
$1.85 ~ $2.50 |
16GB | $35.82 (Amazon) $34.95 (eBay) |
$2.20 ~ $2.25 |
32GB | $67.49 (Amazon) $59.99 (eBay) |
$1.85 ~ $2.10 |
64GB | $89.95 (Amazon) $87.90 (eBay) |
$1.35 ~ $1.4 |
Note: eBay also have 32GB cards for $55 and 64GB for $83.95 at the time of this writing, but these seem to be temporary sales and not the “regular” price.
Unsurprisingly, and removing the odd exceptions (the 8GB card on eBay being one) the price per GB goes down for bigger cards, so in general you get more bang for your bucks if you go with a bigger vita memory stick, even for the 64GB which are typically Japanese imports these days.
I have an 8GB vita memory stick right now, and I’ll probably switch directly to 64GB for my next purchase.
The next question is of course, will 64GB be enough for your current use? Some people have started complaining that they’d really appreciate a 128GB PS Vita Memory card by now…
I’m down to 2GB on my 64 GB PS Vita memory card. Where’s that 128 GB…

Oh, and in case you wonder: No matter what, the PS Vita Memory cards are way more expensive than regular SD cards, where the price per GB is closer to $0.5. And there’s no technical reason behind that, besides Sony needing to make a profit one way or another on the Vita 🙂
What’s your current Vita Memory stick Size? Are you thinking of upgrading? What will you be getting next?
I know this site gives quality depending articles
or reviews and additional material, is there any other site which offers
such things in quality?
I only intend to play the new Odin Sphere game on my Vita, and I’m wondering if anyone knows what the memory requirements are for that game (or if I even need the memory card for a non-download). Otherwise I’m going to have to wait until after the release to get a memory card if I need one, that way I can riffle through the game booklet for the exact specs.
99.9% of Vita games require a memory card. If your Vita is a 2000 model, you get (a measly) 1GB of internal storage space that can act as a memory card.
