Famous 3DS developer Smealum has released his Regionthree hack for the Nintendo 3DS/XL.

Regionthree can enable you to play foreign games (e.g. NA & JP games on an EU 3DS) on your local Nintendo 3DS/XL.

Regionthree does not require any kind of exploit game, it just requires you to have a wireless network (wlan) connection.

Regionthree does work on any Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL and might work on a Nintendo 2DS, regardless of their region (EU, NA, JP, CN, etc). It does not work on the New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL, though.

Regionthree supports firmwares up to version 9.4.0-21X (X is the regional letter, E for EU, J for JP, and so on), which means that the exploitable NinjHax firmware 9.2.x is also supported.

With Regionthree you can circumvent the Nintendo 3DS’ regional lockout (region-lock), which would usually prevent you from playing imported japanese games on your North American or European Nintendo 3DS device.

It can also circumvent game updates, which saves you from being forced to update to a higher firmware to play a certain game.

You only need a launcher.dat file on your 3DS’ SD card, the foreign game you want to play, and access to this website.

The execution is also very easy:



Be sure to have the launcher.dat file on the root of your SD card (X:/launcher.dat).

Power off your Nintendo 3DS/XL and then insert the foreign game you want to play.
Power on your Nintendo 3DS/XL and start the download play application (the one with the 2 orange Nintendo (3)DS’).
Press home and return to the home menu, but DO NOT close the download play application.
Start the browser (on the top of your 3DS) and visit http://go.scmods.com/ (you might want to add this to your favorites, to save time).
Wait a few seconds. The screen should turn black and after that your game should start.
To properly exit the game, keep the power button pressed until it asks you if you want to shutdown your device, or return to the home menu.

If you run into an error after visiting the website, be sure to delete the cookies, history or all data of your Nintendo 3DS’ browser.
To do said thing, start the browser and scroll through its settings. At the very end there should be the delete options.

Another thing you might want to do is properly exiting the foreign game. Pressing home, while playing the foreign game, will freeze your 3DS, so be sure to use the above mentioned way of properly exiting the foreign game.
