Bubble madness – Bubbles here, bubbles there. Where are the limits of the custom PS Vita bubbles?
Even though this is not the first time, that those weird ‘custom bubbles’ have appeared on our blog, I would still like to talk about them.
In the last few days people have showed pictures and videos of PS Vitas running custom-made bubbles, which could start a various amount of different things, be it our well known VHBL (up to 3.35+), be it a TN-V launcher (for ≤3.20) or even an ARK-2 launcher (for ⋚3.20?).
Most of the time it has been me who showed you those things, but my good friend KanadeEngel also showed some interesting things.
The questions now are: What are custom bubbles, what can they do – what can’t they do, where are the limits and can this be easily patched by Sony?
Let me explain it.
If you did not had the chance to take a look at these custom bubbles for the PS Vita, feel free to check out this Playlist that I’ve created. It contains all current and will contain all future videos that deal with these custom bubbles.
Most of the work on this has been done by Qwikrazor, while I’ve provided key information about important things, which, in the end, lead us to success.
We would also like to thank all people that have been involved in this. Without you this would not have been possible!
What are those PS Vita custom bubbles?
Like the name already suggest, it is a modified bubble for the PS Vita. The PS Vita usually launches its games via the click on a small bubble, which is on the Homescreen of the PS Vita itself.
A custom bubble pretty much just means that it is a modified version of an already existing bubble (or a completely new one). It is not an official bubble that you can download from the PSN store (or create via a PS Vita cartridge).
The first appearance of these custom bubbles has been a month ago, which shows the custom bubble method by french developer Tomtomdu80 and our forum member mr.gas. Those two figured out first how to do this, but there is never just one way to achieve a goal, is there? More about this at the end of this article.
What can those custom bubbles do (as of now)?
Like with most kinds of code execution, we prepared a simple hello world. Something that is easy to do and should always work, that is, if you have enough access to run (at least) a Hello World in the first place.
Since a hello world is pretty boring, and I have to agree, our hello world was especially boring – It lacked cool colors, special snow flakes and everything that makes a hello world cool, we know – We went a bit further and tried to incorporate the VHBL into one of these custom bubbles. The success speaks for itself, I would say.
A VHBL is pretty cool, I mean it can run emulators and other kind of homebrews, but how about another kind of launcher, for example one that launches the PSP XMB?
We did this as well, and after some trial and error it worked. Keep in mind that since TN-V is not open sourced, we were unable to port TN-V to firmwares 3.3x, fix the bugs that TN-V has on 3.3x and therefore this can only be done on firmwares ≤3.20.
Some other ideas have been the direct launch of a homebrew itself, without the help of TN-V, ARK-2 or the VHBL, and we have to say that this is possible too. Some homebrews might have to be patched to work, but, in general, this should be possible with most kind of homebrews. No video for this, though.
Playstation 1, Playstation Portable and PS Vita game backups were pretty much the last we have thought about (at first), but after some tinkering we even managed some of those things.
For example the English patched version of Final Fantasy Type-0 is fully working on a PS Vita, even though it has never been approved for the western world or the PSN store itself.
Other games, that have never been on the PSN store before, or are only available on one PSN store, are also working without problems.
PS1 games are currently still untested, but we think this should be possible too. It is also possible that this does not work at all, so I would like to leave this uncommented.
What is definitely impossible to do (as of now)? Limits?
To those who have paid attention in the last part, you might have noticed that I spoke about PS1, PSP and PSV backups. PSP backups were confirmed to work, PS1 backups might (not) work, but we can definitely confirm that it is impossible to run non-bought versions of PS Vita games.
Qwikrazor’s custom bubble method is not capable of running pirated PS Vita games. Yay~
This unfortunately also includes all the legal content that could’ve been installed via the Package Installer on firmwares ≤3.20.
And since those stupid questions will appear: This also does not enable the playback of PS2, PS3 or PS4 games.
Can Sony easily patch this?
To the other part of you that might have paid attention while I was talking about Tom and mr.gas, might have noticed that I would like to talk about the method at the end of this article.
Since this is pretty much the end of this article, lets talk about the method (at least about as much as I can say without spoiling it, of course).
While Tom and mr.gas have been the first to achieve this on a retail PS Vita, we still do not know the method they use. They refuses to share files and they refused to share too many information, but we are kind of glad that they shared a bit of information with us.
Tom’s and mr.gas’ method might be easily patchable by Sony, as far as I know, but the method that Qwikrazor uses might be a bit more durable [Note from Wololo: I don’t have the same understanding].
You read that right, there are (currently) at least 2 completely different methods of creating those custom bubbles. This is good news, because even if one gets patched by Sony, we will still have another way of creating, using and abusing those custom bubbles on our Vitas.
Conclusion
We also know that a lot of people would really like to have custom bubbles themselves, but not even Wololo himself has access to this [udppate from wololo: between the time this article was written and now, I have actually had the opportunity to test and confirm this hack. It is great!], and he also said he prefers to not have access to this, since less people with access means less people that could potentially leak and spoil it for everybody.
This will be released at some point in the future, but don’t expect an official release too soon. Qwikrazor still has to iron out some bugs, and for example to confirm if PS1 backups are possible or not and investigate what else can be done by this.
If you appreciate Qwikrazor’s work, feel free to drop a buck or two, we would really appreciate it.

First!!!
Great read! I always wanted to know how those custom bubbles work, interesting stuff. Seems like you got it to work. 🙂 Awesome job! Nice videos.
You shouldnt take much credits for something that was worked by other people. It just grinds my gears a little but nevermind, go on
Kind of agree here. Following up privately with The Z to understand why he says “we” all over the place, I don’t think that’s a fair way of stating things.
Edit: With the Z’s approval, I have toned down his own importance/involvement in the article. He does feel however that he was key in this technique gaining attention and focus, and even though he was not involved in the code (that was Qwikrazor), he was an important component to the success of this hack. He did not tell me to say that, but I think it is important to clarify his vision of the situation here.
When he says “we” I interpret it as meaning “We the Vita scene” as a whole, including hackers and users, because it’s a united endeavor by all of us?
Not this time, sorry.
I don’t know… If I were Qwik, and The Z helped me by, as they put it, “provided key information about important things, which, in the end, lead us to success.” I’d would’ve liked to give The Z half of the credit since it was a team effort.
But since I don’t know the full story, I guess my opinion doesn’t hold that much weight. But yeah, that’s my opinion on the issue.
Technically qwik wouldn’t have known anything about this trick/method and wouldn’t have been interested this, if I wouldn’t have told him about it, provided him with important information, aspects and (working) ideas how to manage to get this to run.
He might have done the coding part, but I did my part as well. I’ve stated that qwik did the most important thing, but I didnt do “nothing”, thats why Ive initially put myself into the news too, and spoke of “we”.
But I guess that does not count in your eyes…
Sounds like full BS to me; anyway people dont need to be too bright to know who is the guy here
agreed gbro
Lol that pic! and finally you said something 😛
some people are comparing psp scene and ps vita scene, well psps scene was friendly and enthousiast, psvita scene is silly and full of morons and arrogant kids (developers / hackers and users) just keep everything private, and let the scene die, the device is almost dead btw,
Do it yourself and “change the scene” or shut up.
Be glad we release anything at all…
I’d rather you dont you are really self centered and I hate people like you so keep this exploit in your own circlejerk of friends because youre no help.
i read it all
So, I got a custom TN-V bubble running on my Vita. However, I tried replacing icon0.png with a custom one I made, and now it just shows up as a blank white bubble. Mind you, TN-V still works, but could you share some light for those of us who have access to this method already on how to change the icons? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
Keep the same name/format/resolution
Suena, bien “menos burros mas olotes”.
BUEN TRABAJO
awesome write up and wonderful work you guys cant wait to see what the next few months have to show us
comparto con ustedes,,, yo tengo de esas burbujas y si corre el ps1 confirmado …mexico
Hay alguna manera de que me digas como hacer esto please
Custume bubble was one of the first thing I did try back with 1.80 firmware I think was preety cool but idk what happens wen I did it. yea the vita games have a bit of a challenge to them.
Vita 3g 2.xx. Vita WiFi 2.80 shirt thing was after the 2.00 firmware Sony made some real cool updates. cool is having ps4 remote play though.
I have a question is the psx loader exploit also possible by bubble without the need to buy tekken 2
please say yes
cause i missed to buy it
im on 3.18 Ps vita FW with patapon 2 exploit
and no i dont have a retail ps3 or a second Vita and cant afford it at the moment
Do you not know ANYONE with a PS3. You just need it once to put the game on. You could even do it on a PS3’s store demo unit.
I think all this bubble stuff is cool and I can’t wait until something comes out officially. I am still on 3.18 and using both Tekken 2 and Gladiator Begins exploits. Something faster would be great. Keep up the good work and have fun with it.
hmmmmm.. from the explanation, i think this is done by tricking the existing purchased psp game’s icon/shortcut to load a different game/eboot/fboot from /ms0/PSP/GAME.. well if that’s the case, finally, my past exploited games for lower firmwares will now have a use in the future.. nice!
what firmware do you have? ive still got my 2.12 uno exploit locked and loaded brotha
3.18 T3 (Talkman Travel Tokyo).. as what has been advised, stay on 3.18 and do not upgrade FW>3.20.
Well there custume bubbles so I guess there jus with custume pic at least that’s what I thought I did one time with my vita on 1.80
I understand you guy’s owe us nothing but I do not really understand showing us this when we can’t use it yet.
You know, enough of this. Either share it or don’t. Don’t keep showing us something that you guys can do, but aren’t sharing with everybody. You guys are like the kid on the playground with the new ball that won’t let anybody touch it
It’s not that they don’t want to share it but more because they have no permission to share it. And even if they told us how to do it, in the article he stated that there are bugs and problems that exist still. Releasing it now might be patched easily by Sony. Yet there are 2 methods, but still. Also if it was released; there are problems, we’ll probably complain and “blame” them and demand a fix immediately. They’re making a smart decision to not release it. Besides you shouldn’t complain since so much amazing progress is being made on the Vita. Web Exploits and Custom Bubbles. What more could you want? That’s what I think.
@Sleetui Well said! I think he doesn’t realize that someone’s doing the programming!!! I feel like slapping him…*Slaps Ricky D!*
I agree with that, whats the sense of show something if u dont share with everyone, just keep the it in secret. I think the z is a kid, thats why he act like this. It remembers me to “kiko” from la vecindad del chavo
Now listen here you ungrateful little brat because I’m going to tell you how things work around here. These guys walk among the gods and play games with the fruits of knowledge of Hax0rz and every once in a while throw you a bone when they feel they can do it without ruining it. You’re lucky to be getting anything at all.
This is so good love finishing work and coming to read this kind of thing cant wait to see what happens with this guys 🙂 i almost need a towel
I’m still waiting the day someone will manage to run a psvita game copy (aka non-bought versions). It seems impossible to do this LOL
Z and Qwikrazor: what about unlocking vita to use any 3G sim (specially DOCOMO unlocking) Please add this too in your TODO list
I support this
me too
But an european 3G vita (most of those are unlocked) or simply wait.
A locked Vita is *** anyways. Why would anyone lock a Vita?
*buy, damn.
Stop this teasing already
agreed! It’s nice to be up to date with recent developments, even if they are not publicly released, but with this topic it starts to feel like cockteasing.
Dude Z u r a ZERK
Z for ZERG
Hey, The Zett. What if I decided to rebuild the database due to some reason, will all the custom bubbles be gone?
Just tried it myself, the bubbles stay.
So. this means you got a working .rif file (license file) for each of those bubbles. can you back them up to your PC as well? so they become .psvimg and .psvmd files?
I guess you guys just modify the backup files of your games and send them back to your vita.
Gonna try this this afternoon
When i first got my Vita, i tweaked and changed the name of the backup game in the PC but the Offical CMA didn’t let me install it in the Vita… Gonna try it again and see if with the QCMA i can install it and ”tweak it”… DAMN I am at work right, can’t do anything 🙁
First must have 2 or more than 2 exploit games, and then I can change the exploit game file name by pspfiles ,it can be show up as a “new” game though by cma then backup game and reinstallion it ,u can find this “new bubble show up in your livearea,I already test this trick few months ago and success replace WELCOME PARK bubble as a “new” game.
The z has hacker friends and we dont. His greatest pleasure is to rub our noses in that fact. Oh, and to over inflate his own self importance. I would love him to write a detailed blog on just what exactly he does apart from showing us pokemon on his vita in every bleeding video he makes.
damn right. lol
rofl
You sound like you would prefer some digimon action?
Lol best reply ever XD
I know I would, should definitely have some more Digimanz. You should go and try to play a Digimon World 1 Back up on your vita, I Dare You, no wait, I Triple Dog Dare You Bro!
After that time you guys leaked the *** out of PSP exploits I can sorta understand why other people are so secretive around you.
The only person who leaked stuff that wasn’t theirs is Acid_Snake, and his is not involved in this thing. So what the heck are you talking about?
BUBBLES!!!!!!!!!
I just like to blow bubbles…. My grandfathers name was bubbles. Since Im being such an important active member I might as well ask why my 3g vita will only download at 25k/s when I set my ration 2/1 in p2p applications. Somene had to ask….. Im done being an ***.
IS TRUE!!!! psp scene has been awesome devs avaliable, friendly etc now ps vita scene only stupid kid no life player C’MON RELASE FACK THE FUTURE!! NOW RELASE ARROGANT KIDs
I had to lel, m8.
Shut up eat potatoes ahah you have this hack and so? Is only a videogame idiot!!
In Latvia, no potatoes. Only sadness.
Such is life 🙁
Such is life? Naaa life is other 😉 you no relase? Ok no problem 😉 bye kid
Naaa life is other!! Bye 😉
I have no word only in private kid ridicolous arrogant kanadeangel go out from home the sun is most beautifoul of videogames!!!
such engrish u hav here.
Very interesting. I would be extremely happy if I was able to reproduce this on my ps vita. My aim is to play Japan only released PSP games with custom translations like grand knights history. You said that this bublexploit should work without exploited games and on newest firmware, but are there any software requirements ?
Piracy isn’t evil at all. When all the game companies produce low quality/buggy stuff and yet charge a high price for it, piracy is justified. So what that the executive will have to settle for a boat that’s a couple feet shorter, they have tons if money they don’t deserve.
As for the bubbles, nice job Vita modders!
it seems you got a buggy brain, let’s make stew out of it. lol
Ehh there are a lot of different opinions on Piracy. Personally I use it similarly to Bubbleman here… If a game doesn’t have a demo I am not going to drop cash on it until I have a chance to try it out. I have been burned too many times paying full price for games and then not being able to return said game for full price.
Im so excited
ive still got my vita 1000 with the uno exploit, thing must be worth a fortune
You should get a better game, but not change the firmware.
<2.05 is really good 🙂
Any rough estimates for a release date? (Just thought it can’t hurt asking)
Why did Z remove his Paypal? 🙁
I wanted to make a small donation for his awesome work and effort.
There was some disagreement/flames about his level of involvement in the hack, so he asked me to remove the buton
Thats because this particular article was written in such a fashion simply to garner funds for himself, not so much as an informative piece and so hes been busted. So while we catch him in a more humble mood, maybe you could advise him to be more tolerant towards newbies on this site to help foster a more friendly atmosphere. His arrogant and “high and mighty” replies causes nothing but aggravation to people that come to this site everyday.
Didn’t Yifan Lu make a custom bubble just over a year ago?
That was SKFU, and it was not a hack that actually allowed him to run homebrews, just a customization of the icon. Very different.
Awesome to have a writeup on this. I have really been enjoying and drooling over these videos of the custom bubbles (haha). Can’t wait to see what the future holds. Until then I will keep on loving every minute of Type-0 through TN-V. On as side note… if you can even confirm… Does the capability of loading things directly from a bubble create any less overhead or access to more resources that could possibly lead to greater compatibility with emulators such as those for SNES and possibly even N64?
the Z, wololo if you need 1 more tester well im here 🙂 im on 3.18 😉
So this is going to be a thing? Good to hear! I hope Sony takes their time in patching it, once it’s released…
