3DS hack: smealum confirms his exploit works on the New 3DS
It didn’t take long, the New 3DS from Nintendo was released less than a week ago in Japan, and it is already hacked.
Well, except not publicly. Smealum, a 3DS hacker, has revealed several months ago that he had a fully functional hack on the 3DS. He was planning a release for “very soon” not so long ago, but Nintendo announced the upcoming release of their New 3DS right around the same time. Smealum did decide at that point to postpone his release “for the time being”.
Yesterday, he did confirm that his hack is working on the new 3DS, and showcases a “proof of concept” simple homebrew application running on the New 3DS (video below).

What’s not sure is if Smealum is now willing to release his exploit as soon as possible, or if he will be waiting for the new 3DS to reach the US and Europe in early 2015. Was he only looking for confirmation that the New 3DS isn’t patching anything critical, or does he want to wait, in order to make sure a significant amount of New 3DS users will also get the exploit?
The fact that his exploit works on the New 3DS isn’t surprising, after all it is extremely likely that the device uses pretty much the same firmware, functions, memory mapping that the “other” 3DS devices, at least for the most part.
Nevertheless, it’s still great to get confirmation, and exciting to wait for this release. Enjoy the proof of concept video below.

Curious, does it work using the ‘New 3DS mode’ (i.e. utilising the extra capabilities)? The fact that it is a user mode exploit using a game suggests that it might only have access to ‘regular 3DS mode’ capabilities.
Smealum mentioned how excited he was after hacking the N3DS as there was now even greater potential for great homebrew due to the extra ram.
Do we know how much RAM the N3DS has? 256MB?
That’s curious then. Surely it can’t be ‘merely’ a user-mode exploit if the exploit has access to more resources than the game itself?

I’m pretty sure he’s being a sarcastic *** and grouping up the people who want to pirate and the people that wants homebrew/ no region locking.
The only thing I want is that we can bypass the region-lock :< Wonder if it is possible?
I was thinking the exact same thing! Rune Factory 4 will never be released in the EU because the company went under (and as far as I know, no-ones picking up the I.P) and I would buy up an American copy instantly if I knew I’d be able to get it running on my 3DS.
I really don’t understand why Nintendo has insisted on keeping it region-locked anyway.
They keep region-lock to make people buy multiple 3DS, yeah stupid, but that is the reason. To make people with Foreign people with Japanese skill buy Japanese 3DS.

OK, so it works, is he going to release it now?
He delayed it 1 day before the first release date for the new 3DS and now its shown to work is he finally going to release it again or delay for the next thing Nintendo bring out?
Oh, Nintendo might release a new firmware next month so I guess he’ll delay it for that. Then delay for the next one after that. then keep delaying it so nobody cares for it anymore.

Why would he? He waited so he could could test to see if his exploit would work on the new hardware or not.
I think a wise thing to do right now is to wait for the New 3DS to be available worldwide and not only japan.
