Digital PS4 games still up to 48% more expensive outside of the US. AAA Titles up to 57% more
If you are not purchasing your PS4 digital games on the US PSN store, I feel bad for you. I switched to a US PSN account several months ago, and I haven’t looked back.
Last year I published an article showing that PS4 and Vita games are about 50% more expensive in Europe than in the US. After doing the check this year, I can confirm this is still true. This year I am including Japan, Australia, Canada and Brazil in my analysis.
As I needed a sample to work with, I took the best 10 games out of Gamesradar’s 25 best PS4 titles. The list is fairly recent and includes a nice mix of indie and AAA titles.
As was the case in 2013, we see that PS4 digital games are much more expensive outside of the US.
Europe, including the UK, are the most sc*** of all: digital games cost 48% more in Europe than in the US. In other words, this means gamers can buy 3 games in the US for the same money that gets them 2 games in the UK, Germany, France, etc… Worse, if you’re into AAA games, some titles can go up to 59% more expensive in Europe.
Australia is not much better, with digital psn games costing on average 43% more than in the US. And that’s the average. At the end of the spectrum, AAA titles such as watch dogs cost up to 57% more in Australia.
The numbers in Brazil and Japan almost look reasonable compared to Europe, with PS4 games in Brazil being on average “only” 28% more expensive than in the US, and games in Japan 17% more expensive than in the US. Looking at the extremes again, AAA titles easily climb up to 50% more than their US counterparts, in both Brazil and Japan. (Note: for Japan some games were not available in the list, so the comparison was made only for the games available)
At least canada’s prices are more or less aligned with those of the US, actually a bit cheaper thanks to the current exchange rate between the two currencies.
What we see is that Indie titles tend to drive the differences in pricing a bit down. Basically if you’re into Indie gaming, that’s probably good for you. If you like AAA titles however, you get impacted even more by the insane price difference.
Wait, there has to be a catch, right?
No, there is no catch to these numbers. People have told me in the past that US prices don’t include the VAT, which is why they are cheaper. That is somewhat true, but not really. First, sales taxes in the US (the equivalent of the VAT) are typically between 5% and 8%. That’s basically nothing compared to the 50% price difference we are seeing here. Second, given that sales taxes are not enforced in all US states, it is pretty easy to bypass them entirely when purchasing digital goods in the US.
People have also told me that the numbers should be compared to the average income in each country in order to be fair. Well, surprise, surprise, the average income is higher in the US than in any other country in the world (source). If you actually calculate the numbers based on the average disposable income, the numbers get even crazier: games up to 70% more expensive in Australia, 90% in the UK, 170% in Germany (yes, we’re almost reaching 3 times the price at this point), etc…
Is this for me?
So if you live outside of the US, it’s pretty simple, the question to ask yourself is: how much would you benefit from the price cut if you switched to a US account today?
The first condition to switch to a US PSN account it to speak reasonable English. If you need your games to be in your native language, and that language is not English, then it won’t be good for you to use the US PSN. But if you live in the UK or Australia for example, this should be a no brainer.
The second thing to take into account is how much you still rely on physical purchases today. Many people still buy physical discs and resell them to a local store for resale. Basically, if you can resell your physical games for more than 33% of their price, you break even with the US store (except that with the US store technique, you get to actually keep the game – albeit digitally). What I think is that if you can’t resell your games for more than half their price of purchase, you should think about switching to a US account, and go digital instead. Also keep in mind that physical games are not region locked, so you can still buy physical games locally and use them on your US account! This actually means that if you are into physical games, that’s even a better reason to switch to a US account now, so you’ll be ready when the worlld goes to “digital only”.
Finally, people have told me they are afraid to make the switch, because of their previous investments on another account, and that might be the one good reason to not switch. It really depends on how much you have spent so far, and how much games you plan to buy moving forward. To put it simply, it would basically take you less than twice the time you’ve put in so far to break even and start saving. And that’s assuming you want to re-purchase your entire collection in the US account, which most people won’t really do! In my case, I just switch to my old account on the other country once in a while, if I want to play one of my old games. Again, keep in mind that this does not apply to physical games, that you can reuse on the new account.
In other words:
- If your level of English is reasonable
- If you don’t already have many digital games on your “other” account
then you should definitely switch to a US account like I did.
How to switch to a US account and purchase on the US PSN
Switching accounts on the PS4 is easy, just make sure you enter a dummy US address when creating the new account, so that the PS4 knows this is going to be a US account. On the Vita, it’s a bit of a pain but I explain how it’s done here.
The real trick is how to purchase stuff on the US PSN without a US credit card. Paypal or the PSN itself won’t let you do that. The best solution is to buy PSN cards with instant email delivery through Amazon. The basic idea is to purchase a PSN Digital card on Amazon, and make sure to put a US billing address on your credit card. I explain in details how it’s done here.
There’s more
It’s not only about the “everyday” prices. There tends to be more “flash sales” on the US PSN, and on external stores as well. For example, last year in November it was possible to get 1 year of PS+ subscription for only $30 in the US! Also, having a US PSN account on your PS4 lets you access US-only services such as Netflix, assuming you use a DNS redirection trick.
I have saved hundreds of euros/dollars on my gaming hobby since I switched to a US PSN account several months ago. The only reason Sony charge more in Europe, Australia, Brazil, or Japan, is because people let them do so. You can go the hard way, complain for years to Sony about their pricing policy and see how they won’t bulge, or you can go the easy route like I did, and switch to a US account today. If you’re like me, you won’t be looking back, and laugh at the people who are still stuck on their old habits.

I switched to US PSN when i got my PS4 just for all those reasons. There is no valid argument against that. And while not using the Vita there is no reason against using your other accounts simultaneously either.
Here in Peru, new physical ps4 games can cost between 50~70$.
Lucky you, here in Aus its like $70-$100, digital games are the same, if not more expensive then physical
It’s worth mentioning that you can have multiple PSN accounts on a PS3/PS4 and purchase games on both, if you have the PS4 set as your home console for both PSN accounts, you can play the games you purchased from your US account while logged into your main account, you still get trophies too! (Not sure if you can do that on the PS3)
I’ve got my NZ account, with PS+ (The European PS+ service tends to be better than US) and my US account logged into my PS4
Yes. Just be aware that a good amount of games are not cross-compatible with DLC. 2 examples are Bioshock: Infinite and Mass Effect 3. Always be wary. Also, some saves are not cross-compatible, and tied to a specific region.
This cost stuff always bothers me, when comparing any product, each market is different, so to just convert prices isn’t fair. What are other costs in the area? Taxes? Insurance? Laws? All of those things have an effect on cost, along with simply making money. Which, if I were to guess, they aren’t racking in that much more from other countries than the U.S. I’m not saying it isn’t a problem, but I don’t pretend to know other countries and their cultures in absolute detail.
“The only reason Sony charge more in Europe, Australia, Brazil, or Japan, is because people let them do so.” – Oh wololo, I don’t agree with this. I’m sure if anything, they’d force it the other direction if people exclusively started adopting U.S.-only accounts. Other regions, and SONY, are sure not to like that. For now, they seem cool. I take advantage of sales for both regions, cause we both get great sales, sometimes more in Europe than U.S., so it’s not fair to say U.S. is always better, but via direct cost converting, yes U.S. is in fact cheaper.
I’m all about taking advantage of cheaper prices, go ahead. If you can do it, why not, but the reason is more complicated than people give it credit.
What I do recommend if one wants to save money, is to buy a Playstation Plus membership from your respective West to East neighbors. I have a UK account with PLUS as well as my main U.S. account, and while sometimes getting a U.K. PS PLUS 1 yr is annoying at time, I look for sales, the value is so much stronger. Or…Not stronger, but different. I have a crudload of games offered from both regions, some overlap, but most don’t. It’s great! And I am building a catalogue of games for my PS TV, if it gets more VITA games support in the future. Cause switching users on my regular VITA is just too much hassle.
Oh. And Canada’s PSN prices have gone up, even though they dollar value is cheaper. So, I believe they adjusted to the losing of money, like they do in other countries…
I did take taxes and average wage into account, it makes the situation even better in favor of the US. Read again.
Oh, yeah. Sorry for my lack of Clarification wololo. (Semi-Rant and all). What I should have said was that I hate when people don’t, cause you did. I didn’t mean that you didn’t go into that yourself. Your article was better than most blatant posts. I’m glad that you did the whole math.
The part that I want to understand though is the Marketplace of other countries. As an example, health care in the U.S. is so expensive, but it’s because they have to follow very specific procedures/laws/certifications, and the training for that profession is also costly. There’s reason their costs(Still highly overpriced, but that’s their reasoning not mine) are so high. Cost of living is so high as well mainly due to capitalism. However…The cost of living, housing in particular, in Germany, for example, is really cheap, but a car or a computer it is ridiculously overpriced. Products seem to get super high prices overseas, from my experience, while services/housing/healthcare are way lower. It’s a different economy.
Still…Just buy from the U.S. like you said. It’s definitely cheaper. If one can do it, do it. 🙂
While you take wage and tax into account you also have to factor in living expenses. They aren’t the same from city to city much less State to State. Renting a rundown apartment in New York city costs a small fortune compared to renting a good place where I currently live.
In Canada, the going price of ps4 games is 69.99, 10 dollars more than wiiu, xbone, and ps360.
Also the ps4 is 450 dollars. It was raised by 50 because they were flying off the shelves too fast.
I’m from Brazil, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Digital games may bem “just” 50% more expensive, but when it comes to physical games (which sometimes is necessary because internet here is hyper crappy) sometimes are 150% or 200% more expensivem and that where the minimal wage is about U$300 (making it MUCH poorer than Europe).
I just cannot understand why digital copies are more expensive. There is no reason for this at all. There is no shipping, manuals, no packaging, no nothing. Even the CDN is probably outside Brazil, because datacenters here are ridicuclously expensive, every company here host their solutions in other countries or even in other continents (as ridiciculous as it may sound) .
Companies tend to complain that they don’t support Brazil much because of piracy, but it’s not reasonable to ask people from a country that have 1/5 or less per capita income of US the same inflated prices as Europe. It’s just won’t happen.
Hi! The cheapest PSN account is not US, it is PSN Turkey. Look for the proices and you will see.
welcome to the American dream
Pro Tip for PS4 owners.
Open a US Psn account and log into your PS4 with it. When asked uf this is your primary playstation, say yes.
Now you can play games downloaded from the US PSN on your existing european or australian account.
Switch users to check the sotre and compare prices, buy the cheapest one ane enjoy.
i switched from US to JP and never look back, my main problem is games not money.
If I buy from the US PSN store and then switch back to my main account which is New Zealand (EU PSN) does it force me to play on US servers or would I still be able to play with my friends? Been trying to work this out but havent been able to find a definitive answer. For instance for Destiny I can buy the digital guardian edition cheaper from the US than I can buy the standard edition here but that would be a waste of money if i cant play with my friends here.
I would first say that digital content is worthless compared to a disk. The prices should be close to equal. And yes in Canada prices are gone up or not close. One example is Killzone mercenary, every damn store $39.99, and used at EB games $35. not much savings there. on DLC version. $24.99. Is the plastic cartridge and case worth that?
I feel bad for some people here who have to pay way more for games and $ony gear. I am sure alot of cost is due to VAT, and stupid import fees. I try to get games used but alot of times its cheaper to get them off ebay. I am not sure if it would be cheaper for people to import a game for less, but id bet there is local duties and taxes that would be pointless.
And as for DLC, dont get me started, it has 0 resale value. I refuse to buy any DLC unless it is an addon to a disk/cartridge based game. With a disk or cartridge you own it, you can have access to it anytime, you can sell it. with DLC they control it forever, you paid for it but only rent it forever.
\
look what they did to Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and mvc2, they took it away due to licencing. no one new can now buy MVC2. i was lucky to find UMVC3 on vita and ps3 on disk and already had MVC2. my rant is DLC has no resale value and u never truly own it.
There should be a law that a person can resell their DLC to another persons PSN ID for PSN money, even if sony got a percentage, they would make a mint.
“Is the plastic cartridge and case worth that?” With the cost of production plus shipping, yeah, probably…
Brazillian prices are not reasonables, as a brazillian myself i can tell you this, $ 449.99 to brazillian reais is R$1,001.30, most games in psn US is like $59, if you convert is like R$ 131.30, but they sold as R$199.00
also, the prices sometimes changes as they like to, for exemple, PS3 version of last of us, in psn BR cost R$199.00, but you can purchase bluray version from 109.00 to 150.00, in other hand, ps4 games cust 199.00 in psn BR but bluray versions cost 250.00.
brazil have insane prices, the start price of ps4 here was R$ 4,000.00, if you convert to usd you’ll get $1,797.70 dollars, it’s insane! how can 399 can turn into 1,797 reais??
sorry, the last price is alread dollars, $1,797 dollars was the start price of ps4 in brazil
cant developers reverse engineer irshell 5.0 and nethosftfs bundled with it
so there comes a 660 version of the tools and remotejoy for the net
im intrested in reverse engineering
My PSN is a Middle East account, which has the prices the same as EU. There’s no PSM, & I can’t switch to a US account because, as mentioned, I have bought games & I have trophy progress, & because Amazon & eBay don’t ship here, so there’s noway I can buy games. Sony care most about the US so they can compete with the Xbox, that’s the main reason.
i would say blame european taxes
I don’t understand you guys! You can get a USA account and open the game in your normal account (europe account), get trohhys progress and everything else…You only have to remenber to only buy games in USA account to get a low price. I’ve had one since I bought my first ps3 in 2008. I think i saved more than a thousand dollars and i live in Brasil one of the highest tax countrys i know.
The Brazil is more expensive than in Portugal. I disliked Brazil at all since they have too many old stuff like old bus, bad street and road and no improvement. That’s why woman government does nothing to improved things in Brazil. Portugal is beautiful and its awesome. The games are affordable.
I don’t know if this has been said already but I have a U.S account and an Irish account. I buy the games from the U.S account(using codes I buy from a U.S Amazon account) and download it, then I’m able to play it on my Irish account. So if anyone is afraid of losing everything they have done so far, you needn’t be.
