Now with that out of the way, nice article. After such a long time with no days of gaming, it’s nice to see regular updates.

  2. NoSpam says:

A fair chunk of PS2 focus in that, felt a little fanboyish but otherwise excellent.

My only gripe is with how you’ve skimmed over the Dreamcast’s features. Yes it had online gameplay, it also had a web browser, voice chat and the VMU could be used as a 2nd display and as a tamagotchi/(simplistic) hand held game system with certain games/saves.

    • Acid_Snake says:

I don’t see any fanboyism here, I made it pretty clear that I learned about the GameCube and Dreamcast way into the end of 6th gen, and I was impresed with them (I still use them today). Most of the article is about trying to study why the PS2 was so successful, and to do that I picked apart the good and the bad of its direct competitors one by one to try to find a reasonable conclusion (the last paragraphs of the article). A similar thing I will try to do for the Wii and the PS4 in the next two articles.

      • Kira Slith says:

Well yeah you can’t see fanboyism in you’re own posts regardless of whether or not the claim of fanboyism by “NoSpam” is valid or not. Fanboy’s can’t see their own fanboyism regardless of how hard they try. Its just another fact of life…

Although the Xbox bashing is definitely real with this one: “This console really felt like a weaker PC” and there was a bit of PS2 slurping too, confirmed by the line “and why Nintendo fell to Sony’s dominance for two generations in a row” although they certainly dominated in raw console sales 6th gen if only for costing as much as a DVD player and also being a game console, Nintendo actually had better console sales both 5th and 7th generation. so yeah, your fanboyism does kinda show Snake… which is to be expected considering this is a blog founded on Sony products.

        • Kira Slith says:

***, i misread my own chart again, sony dominated console sales 5th gen (even if total game sales where outdone by Nin10), still slurp slurp.

  3. deathbydevice says:

He forgot to add the criticism Microsoft gave console gamers saying PC is the future of gaming and not home entertainment systems. Then they turn around with the xlax cause they saw money in it

    • Acid_Snake says:

I didn’t know about that, I didn’t have a PC back then so I didn’t follow that world, and I didn’t own the Xbox, I only really had a PS2 and later a GameCube I bought to play Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes.

      • deathbydevice says:

Its all good, but that was a major reason why xlax didn’t take off as it should have. It was a good system. You did bring up a very good point the Xbox controller looks just like the dreamcasts. Now I get to make fun of my friends that like xlax for the controller lol.
I know where your coming from tho, for me if it wasn’t PlayStation, it wasn’t worth my time.

ahh ps2 ,my release day ps2 still boots up and stuff without any errors etc while my ps3 sits broken in the corner with an RROD xbox 360 slim
im sure steam os and pcs will be the next big thing if sony doesnt loosen up restrictions on the ps4 and vita etc

  5. Jefphar says:

Why is it hard or impossible to emulate PS2 on handhelds like PSP or PSVita

    • snickersnack says:

Because the PS2 is more powerful than a PSP and the Vita is woefully underpowered to do the job. They’re both awesome handhelds but you really need a 3GHz+ core i series or 4GHz+ Piledriver/ Steamroller CPU to run PCSX2 well.

    • Conjo says:

PSVita isn’t even fully hacked nor there is a SDK that allows to do that.
And since unless Sony do it, it will lag with most games I think.

      • Conjo says:

Broken English there but I guess it’s understendable

        • ski says:

          understandable

        • JCK07115 says:

Hey Conjo, I saw your tutorial under the PSP section. It was a good one. This article by Acid_Snake is an exceptional one. I was born close to the beginning of the 21st century hence, I enjoy learning about the history about the field to which I feel strongly called. I love learning about the early consoles. I got a PS1 when I was about 7/8 y/o. A PS2 about 2 years after. A PSP not too shortly after the PS2 and a PS Vita late last year. Please keep these articles coming!

          • Conjo says:

I was born really close to the beginning of the 21st century too (98), lol

          • Kira Slith says:

Same here, (96). mom always said I was born with a Game Gear in my hands, (must be why I weighed 11lbs 12oz, XD)

  6. Jefphar says:

Why won’t anyone come up with an innovation Handheld that will be able to play or emulate PS2, PS3, or Xbox.this will be the best hit. Android did not even come near.

    • Aerinas says:

It’s not that nobody came up with the idea. The problem is that to make an emulator you have to run it on hardware that is about 10 times as strong as the original. Or you can run it on the bare metal (like the ps2 did with ps1 games, and the wii did with gamecube games), but that requires that you have the schematics for that hardware, something that is not going to be released, ever.

      • Quade321 says:

Didn’t Acid_Snake just mention in the article that the PS2 just had a PS1 processor and that’s why it worked? Also if you read and watch stuff that failoverfl0w (where’s the zero again? idk..) they say that the Wii really is just a Gamecube. It even has the same graphics card and processor. Everything is just clocked up a bit. So, when the Wii wants to enter Gamecube mode, it just underclocks itself and runs the game normally.

So… neither of those are really emulation. Although the PS2 is kinda half emulation since it only had a roughly similar processor.

Kinda makes me wonder if they put an IOP in the PS3 or PSP so POPS runs really good. xD

  7. jlo138 says:

It’s funny that the gamecube used the mini DVDs when lots of us know that modders eventually made full DVD size custom tops that look identical to the original. So close that many wouldn’t notice unless shown. Wish we could post pictures here… Wololo? 🙂 Then they could have just make the laser rail longer. You didn’t mention the Panasonic Q Nintendo released in Japan that sported a DVD player but was $450… Not much competition at that price and limited release though. I like these articles….

  8. edukarlo says:

just add PS2 and DC emulation on the PSV, and I’ll be good.. then, sony releasing next handheld in 2020’s will be just fine for me.. #istilllovepsvita
