TN-V4: Clarifications on firmware 3.01, 3.00, and the recently patched exploits
A few days ago, Sony released firmware 3.01 for the PS Vita. As the Z mentioned already, this kind of disrupted some of the release plans for TN-V4, but not too much. If, at this point, you are completely lost about the upcoming TN-V4 release, about usermode exploits, about what firmware you should update to: don’t panic, it’s perfectly normal. So many things happened over the past few days that pretty much everybody is confused. Let me try to clarify a few things:
If you are on firmware 3.01
So, you upgraded to the latest firmware? Don’t worry. As The Z stated, TN-V4 has been confirmed to work on firmware 3.01, and so does the game exploit that shall not be named from the Ninja release. Basically, you’re good to go. Don’t know how and where to get the ninja release? Check this thread.
If you are on firmware 3.00
You’re on firmware 3.00 and are not sure if you should update to 3.01, stay at 3.00, or throw a coin, sacrifice a cow, and decide based on the answer of the gods? Well, here the choice is up to you: Firmware 3.01 patches several game exploits that are potentially compatible with TN-V4. In particular: if you are on firmware 3.00, it appears you will be able to run TN-V4 through game King of Pool.
King of pool is the game I have used to shoot the #PSVita TV #TNv4 video a couple of weeks ago.

What does that mean? It means you have here a game available on the PSN, that will work with TN-V4 as long as you stay on firmware 3.00. If you upgrade to firmware 3.01, you’ll have to get the game from the ninja release (see paragraph above), but if you stay on firmware 3.00, you can get King of Pool. That’s basically useful if you already own that game, or do not want to wait for the ninja release. In order to be able to buy the game (and therefore, access the PSN) without updating your firmware, follow the guide here.
Some people have claimed that a new exploit in Urbanix would also work for TN-V4 on 3.00. Our resident hacker qwikrazor87 says no, so I’ll side with him on this one. Also the new urbanix exploit is real, it seems it will not let you run TN-V in firmware 3.00 and above, only lower firmwares.
The above feels too complex/unsure? Then upgrade to 3.01, and you shall grab the ninja release game when the time comes
If you are on a firmware below 3.00
There are several exploits that have been confirmed to be compatible with TN-V4, depending on your firmware. Staying on a low firmware has benefits: TotalNoob has stated that 2.12 and below give you access to 64MB of Ram in the PSP emulator, while any firmware above will only give you 32MB (For those of you born after 1990, MB is the unit of Ram that was used on electronic devices in the nineties, and on Sony’s devices 5 years ago).
On the other hand, if you are on a low firmware, accessing the PSN to get one of the exploitable games can be a challenge. Again, try the technique mentioned here if you want to give it a shot.
But more realistically I’d say: if you are on a lower firmware and already have one of the exploitable games, you might want to stay there. In any other case, I’d recommend to go to 3.00 or 3.01.
An incomplete list of the older firmware exploits compatible with TN-V4 can be found here (thanks to The Z). Again, what exploit runs for you highly depends on your firmware.
Why the heck are we talking of user mode exploits? I thought TN-V4 was kernel??
Yeah, this is confusing for a lot of people, yet it is simple: in order to trigger a kernel exploit, you need a usermode exploit first. Think of the PSP kernel as some jewel protected in a safe. The safe is locked, and is in a house. The house has many windows, all locked. in order to reach the jewel, you need to break into the house through one of the windows, then break into the safe itself. The windows are the exploitable games, and breaking into a window is what the usermode exploit does. Opening the safe, the second layer of security, is the kernel exploit. You can’t open the safe when you’re not inside the house.

They will announce the game publicly, then they release the files a few days later. In short, yes we have to wait a bit longer.
Hopefully this clears up some of the chaos confusion that’s spread in the last couple days. I somehow doubt it though.

No, Sony will patch the PsVita firmware when they analyze TN’s kernel exploit. This is why they have ninja releases.
Kinda wish I had this information before I upgraded to 3.01… I was hoping the exploit would be available in the JP PSN store (from the Vita TV article), but I guess that game is now patched. From my understanding, the ninja release is not available on JP PSN. :/
The game he used was patched. However the game from the ninja release was not as stated by the z. Wait paitently and when you get the release you will be able to run tnv4 on vita tv

It’s secret for a reason, for one, Wololo would probably filter a comment with someone saying the name. Two, forum members who receive the name, may never receive another ninja for leaking information. Register on the forums, and get the name like everyone else.

You don’t ask for the game, nobody will tell you. It’s the same as leaking the release. I’ve had the ninja since Wednesday, and newly registered members only receive the ninja like 24 hours before the release.

yea i prefer to upgrade to latest so i have greater chances to play new games.. and one we should remind ourselves that not all in the lower firmware have access to 64mb.. 2.02 for example doesnt have the 64mb but only 32mb. got the ninja release luckilly

After TNV is released aren’t we going to need a updated Open CMA or is version 5 okay to use.

It will. If you have an exploit already, it will work. TN-V will be released for all exploits from 3.01 and before. This has been said.
This post is more of a “hay, you don’t have an exploit or want to update? Here is what you need to do”. Personally, I left 2.02 for this as I want the updated youtube/browser/ect. O, and Tunein. I happen to like that, even though the check in *** sucks.

Hi :D!!!. About Urbanix EU, is it patched on 2.12 ? Because I have it on 1.81. If it’s not patched, the owners of this exploit will update to have the 64mb 😀
So what if I miss the public release? Sony reacts pretty fast. The period of time you have to download it is just + – one hour (thats the information I got somewhere from this site). Will I be forced to wait weeks or even months for another exploit or do you have more hidden exploitable games that you release shortly after the TN-V4 release? I really want to use this but I also need sleep and I have a real life. Its important to know wether or not is it worth it to wait and check as often as I can. I did not know that there is this ninja release thing so I never registered b4 the TN-V4 announcement. I am not begging for it but if I dont get the info b4 the public release I at least want to know if I have to be alert all the time.

Well, do you have a /talk account? If so you probably won’t have to wait for the public release, although the window may still be small. This post implies that there is a ninja release in progress (or soon to be) so you will probably have some time to get it.
If work prevents it (assuming the window + public release before Sony pulls it is less than something like six hours), then that’s just unlucky. The ninja release method is incredibly beneficial as compared to Sony pulling the game for everyone within a few hours of the announcement.
I have a question, rigth now I have my ps vita on FW 2.06 and I have apache overkill exploit so Can I stay on this FW and I will be able to get TN-V4 later? Or do you recommend me update my FW? Probably I will use TN-V4 only for psp games so really I don’t care about 32MB a lot. 🙂
Tn-v4 will run on Apache Overkill, but wont support 64mb ram.

Just to clarify…My firmware is 1.81 urbanix exploit so I can use tnv4.
But is there any major difference between 1.81 & 2.12 & can I use a pc to force update to 2.12 if there is a major difference? (I mean like iphone & itunes aystem with shift restore…anything like that?)

Just stay in 1.81 firmware, at least it is sure that tn v4 will be realised for it, but for 2.12 not really sure. Don’T update now, just stay in 1.81 it is better. And the 64mb isn’t important at all really :D. Even Total noob doesn’t use it looool 😀
It depends if you get the ninja release in time, or if the rumor about exploits working on 3.00 is true. 2.10-2.12 is the ideal firmware, if they are the only ones to allow 64mb ram. But many homebrew applications work fine with 32mb, so 1.81 might be fine. I plan to stay on 1.81 until I have no choice but to upgrade or buy another PSVita.
So, basically, assuming that wololo is mistaken and the claim that 2.10-2.12 only allow 64mb RAM, then upgrading to 2.12 may be a good idea. But otherwise you should stay on your current firmware (it probably won’t require additional store purchases) until you find a homebrew or game that requires an update. (though, obviously, for games you’d have to have a sub-3.01 exploit game, so this is a relatively small number of Vita titles – especially if 64mb is important and only the games between 1.81 and 2.12 would be available)
I bought Arcade Darts awhile ago for one of the usermode exploits. I still have that game and since I can not buy Gamocracy since it isn’t in the US PSN Store anymore, I used a proxy and my PS3 to install it onto my 2.02 Vita which I will update to 2.12 when TN-V4 comes out as I still want to have access to my current eCFW using Uno.
The last few exploitable games have been pretty pricy so I am glad that I already have something I can still use.

Wololo – probably makes sense to clarify in the article that high memory support (64mb) is ONLY for the 2.1X exploits per the TN-V4 change log.
Maybe this was answered in The Zett’s partial list, but is Fieldrunner exploit on 2.61 going to be applicable with TN V4? I did not see it on the list.

Could you please tell me if I want to run psp isos in psp emulator, do I need to buy TWO games (one for unlock the user mode and the other for the kernal mode), or only one game for the kernal exploit is ok? If you are a member of the forums, in good standing, and post then you should get at least 12 hours leeway to deal with before it is released to the public. So check when you go to bed, and when you get up.
Heck, for Uno I was lucky by being able to get it days before it was announced to the public. So don’t let this ruin your sleep, you need that :).
Besides it took sony days to start taking it down from the store after the public release.
That’s why we’re in hurry before Sony take it down.It will happen if TN release the exploit.

If you have a exploit that is currently working, and you don’t update, then yes. You will just replace your current exploit for the new one which will include a kernel exploit.
Will we have openCMA for the PSV 3.01???
Already works. Well, I am on 3.00 until the game is released (lets me test how my proxies are doing) and it works fine.
Though if you want you can also use QCMA (http://wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=34677) which as a bonus also works on Linux (ARCH for me) with the usual OSX/Win support.
