Sony announces the PlayStation 4; Full roundup of details
Sony just announced the PlayStation 4 at their “Future of PlayStation meeting” in New York as I type this, something we all saw coming. Keep reading and I’ll do a full run down of the specs, controller and features! This is it everyone, the future of console gaming has arrived; the PlayStation 4.
THE SPECS
Veteran designer Mark Cerny, who headed up architecture on the new console, introduced the PS4 at an event today in New York City. He ran down the specs briefly.
The PS4 specs described are still very much a PC in terms of internal hardware and OS: an x86 processor, an 8-core combined CPU/GPU, and 8 GB of unified GDDR5 memory (versus the PS3’s 512 megabytes). The PS4 will have a local HDD however nothing yet as to whether its a solid state. The new RAM will enable the new “suspend/resume” functionality that allows you to instantaneously start and top playing by hitting the power button. Quite impressive and especially if you notice that its a 16x the RAM of a PS3 or XBOX 360.
You can suspend/resume the system instantly by pressing the power button. A secondary custom chip will handle downloads and uploads so you can get games onto your console even when it’s turned off. You can also play games while they’re being downloaded, Cerny said.
THE CONTROLLER
The controller is basically the same as the prototype leaks we recently saw however this official controller is a little more refined with raised platforms around the standard buttons. The PS4 controller has the known touch pad with full motion control and a “light bar” for identification purposes. There’s also a share button, and the light bar, as well as being used to identify players with color coding.
THE FEATURES AND DESIGN
The PS4 is a next generation console and the features are something that are something to set it apart.
Sony’s Gaikai cloud tech has been put into the console, turning the machine into a server and making the PS Vita a client. So you’ll be able to play your PS4 games on the go on your Vita, and support should be full unlike the PS3 remote play. Furthermore, Gaikai boss David Perry said his company is exploring long term options to make PS3 game “ubiquitous on any device.” The cloud tech is advanced Sony could put PS1, PS2, PS3, and PlayStation Mobile games on any device, including the PS4. According to Sony, it would change the idea of game longevity.
Sony also just made it official: a big feature of the PlayStation 4 will be a share button on the controller. Full Facebook integration will be part of the sharing system.
Your friends list can be expanded to include accounts from third-party services like Facebook, including real-world names and profile images. You can record and share videos and screenshots, including streaming your content live. You can access the PS4’s online services not just from your PS4, but from phones and tablets as well, queuing up downloads and messaging friends. After announcing this they then showed the preview of what the UI (User Interface) will look like, its dubbed the dashboard for the time being and will be a mix of the XMB and the PS3’s new PlayStation store.
Stay tuned, more information is spilling out slowly including new games for the PS4 and tech demos.
Yeah, watching it right now! Totally worth it! Now just tell us about the GPU and Processor! It probably is more powerful than most modern computers!
Probably not. It may have more cores than usual as many AMD CPUs do. But those cores may not necessarily pack that much of a punch if they are much like other AMD CPUs which for gaming at least all seem to be blown out of the water by Intel’a quad core line up.
Something does not add up, how does a x86 architecture work with 8GB ram, it can’t natively address it. That’s the reason why we have x64 now.
I believe it’s x86-64 a.k.a. x64. That’s where the confusion comes from
going to be way to expensive though… I will wait for the price to drop
Did they give a price?
No price was announced but a release date is aimed at Holiday 2013.
I’ve heard it’ll be priced at $400, if that’s expensive for you then don’t expect to be able to buy a ps4 in a couple of years
That is how much my current craptop cost.DAMN I GOT RIPPED OFF.
jk jk jk
Well, I missed all but the last 5 minutes, but I can’t believe Bungie is releasing something for the PS4.
Think it will be better than the original Halo?
so I have a ps4 controller now *** poor vita
well its more for there remote play i guess ps4 game on the go hope they do sumthing with the vita fulll unlimited 4g data plans would make dust 514 or crisis prety booos on the go at the park..
I don’t get it , how the console itself will look ?….
Sony probably hasn’t even figured that out yet.
its sony probly be black but japan will get a custume white one and ill have a blue ps4 n say sony playsation hoping blue neon lights or the whole thing clear black n glow blue or sumthing think they sad it will come with a controler n the new eye toy for the ps4 so its have like 3d n montion capture videoing that willl proly a kinext set but two ps3 eyetoy together
That comment was so stupid, it was epic.
They never showed it. I assume they must be still working on it.
I think so as well, none of the games are ‘complete’ I think, most are still WIPs, they probably still have to take care of some loose ends.
I don’t like the touchscreen though, it is like the rear touchpad, so how do you know where the game expects you to touch, if it’s for gestures then fine.
I really liked the design of the ‘motion sensor’, instead of transmitting more data wirelessly by using gyroscopes, they used the PS3’s system, tracking the light, but I don’t understand how that could be so accurate, do the PS3 remotes also have some infrared waves as well?
And so it begins…
Two hours later, and no console unveiling…
Supposedly a 399.99. Price
And that’s probably cheaper than the PS3 if you adjust for inflation.
nice any realse bundles
PS4 is for E3
Kinda disappointed with presentation… wanted to see more…
Watch dogs looks mint, i hope its a ps4 launch title.
Shame they didnt show the console but maybe at e3 they will show us a nice sexy design.
Why a touch pad? I hope it’s not gonna be one of those things I never use, like the 3DS’s 3D, the Vita’s back touchpad, and the Xbox’s Kinect.
mouse keyborad i guess the two button on the side of the thouch screen r right n left click button on the mouse
Not using the 3DS’ 3D beats the purpose of having bought a 3DS.
Nice article. Rumors say it will have 2 models. One of which will cost about $429 and the second $529. Also, it will be released in November.
probly different hardrives 500 gigbit or terabit hopping more …
so they making cloud gaming a big thing in the 2013-14 gen consoles nice to see the vita got upgraded..hope they throw in a huge hard drive got lots of movie in music n all remote to the vita n server fuction was a nice touch cloud my music n video …wander if it will have psp n psx ps2 game cloud storage to the vita probly but helps to save on my game storage i guess.. anything on the “PRiCe”…???…
“The cloud tech is advanced Sony could put PS1, PS2, PS3, and PlayStation Mobile games on any device”
That’s all I heard.
bumers jus there mobile game well sum r prety alright any on there classic psx game them on mobiles would be cool tough n sony can make money light nintendo with the old games going mobile..
So no Backward compatibility, maybe possibly via streaming like “On-live” service.
I can already see this just like PSN PS3 games or PSP games for
PS VITA about 5% of games of will be available.
As for the games im disappointed, really port of “Diablo 3” for PS3 and PS4 and a new “Final Fantasy”.
Out of Ubisoft i was hoping for “Beyond Good and Evil 2” and from Square-Enix you guessed “Final Fantasy VII Remake” cause seriously latest “Final Fantasy” are rally disappointing.
wy after final fantasy eight i went everquest and final fantasy vanadeil the ps2 derg was good did not like a lot of the ps3 tittle cuz there lack large battles n the battle system was a bit shity n the load beofre battele is a shity thing now days they need to be more instens into a battle then instenly picking up item n forigin..oooh final fantasy remake of eight and nine…hope the next gen consle has more sapport for online rpg games like warcraft n games like star wars repulic online think yulll be able to cloud warcraft but wont u jus have like a video stream from the gaming server hosting the game buffering was always a shity thing playing concles games online welll that n the power of the system to handle the game
The PS4 could emulate every console ever made so far at full speed but as usual, Sony likes to under-use their hardware.
No. It will be able to emulate PS1 and PS2 games no problem. But emulating PS3 games will be very difficult. Probably harder than PS2 emulation on the PS3.
For all I care,it is guaranteed to emulate GC/Wii.
Heh… two years on, and we now have trailers for the legendary FFVII remake.
YYYAAAWWWNNN…… PC>PS4
server>pc>ps4-pc=(ps4-server)
Thats a good one
true story, then hops the latency bunny in and your down to pc.
Also, pc = server = ps4 = ps3. Last 2 are just locked systems 🙂
2x > e^(1/2) + sqrt(2)
Don’t buy into hype. If a feature sounds good, don’t just buy it because of that. Most new features have bugs and don’t work as well as they’re hyped up to.
A system is a system, it doesn’t matter the brand, specs or price. What matters above all else is the games. Don’t fall into the branding.
Think before you invest any amount of money into anything. If you’re spending 400-600$ on something that has only one thing you want, find something else you want for less that will hold you over until more reasons to buy come along. -Very rarely- is it worth it to be an early buyer, and often times it’s better to be a late buyer, as was the case of the last generation. Early PS3’s YLOD’d, Early 360’s RROD’d, and the early PSP had a RAM upgrade. Don’t buy until you’re sure.
same with vita got new model coming but there concles modification were mostly due to the softmod sceen n hard mode seen so i heard welll the 360 hard a problem with overheathing wy ps3 came more populer but hard ware wise i would think i would prefer an xbox but game wise a ps3 n for werd crazy games a nintendo wii more hands on motion games was prety interesthing… but after they made the jasper in the elite xbox 360 xbox was jus a good as ps3…
i guessing the start n select buttons or the long retacle button on by the r1 n r2 then there the thouch pad with the two input button on the side of it looks like the a stero or sumthing or is that for airflow intake herd sposed to get cool or sumthing the remote well neve mind look at the picture n the two botttun on the side of the touch pad r the start n select button looks like use mini usb to charge.. the blue light or blue part on the fron side of the controlers kinduf stows it off n makes it look werdly shity looks like the xbox 360 controlers a bit welll the underneath of the controllers looks a bit bulky….
Gunblade – deciphering your text makes my head hurt
Same here… I’d be interested to know more about gunblade’s background. Is he a native English speaker with a massive writing disability, or a foreign engineer who designed a weird version of google translate? It’s sad because when you do spend the time to decipher what he says, there is *some* interesting points in there
This probably means that you’ll have to buy the PS3 games from the store again, despite having the discs. Sony doesn’t seem to learn from it’s mistakes, huh?
I think it does, apparently to them, the PSP and Vita trick worked out quite well, for us as well as them 😉
Our exploits, their sales 😉
well, at the very least they could have added a disk check… the drive should be supporting old disks. then the system can verify if it’s genuine and then offer to play the game using their service… the only problem could be a re-use, but if there’s any writable place on the disk, or an identification number, there would be no problem
if every disk has its own unique ID, there would be no problem for Sony to only allow one account to play the game with this disk ID… simple because you must go online anyway.
since theres an apu, can I assume all 8 gigs is available for the cpu and gpu? how will the x86 cpu address all 8? seems like there is going to have to be 3, at max, for cpu side and 5 for the gpu side, but then there is probably going to be 1 or 2 reserved for the system/the standby mode. I wish they elaborated more…
Isn’t PS3’s RAM 256 MB?
Vita is 512 MB
i dont really care. all i really care is how to hack and break this thing
This seems interesting. I like the ability to play games from any generation (might finally be able to play all those .hack games!) and hope they include the full library for PS/2/3/P/Vita games. I wonder how you’d play PS2/3 games on the Vita, though? An emulator with the L/R buttons being L/R and L/R2 wouldn’t work too well…
ps4 weak … 8gb RAM, tower-pc’s have ~16gb these days … octacore ? well thats nice but tower has 8 aswell…
gamelineup … 1 good game … ow and facebook. cool. /not
the question is: is this really needed? on PC you run tons of apps each eating memory. here you aren’t really much to go with sony’s known restrictions
also the ps3. what about it?
also consoles != PC
this bored me to death. only an apple product could have bored me more. -_-
Pc arch?
PC GPU?
x86 CPU?
Windos pls.
