NVIDIA shows us “Project Shield”

We’ve all heard of this company, NVIDIA, for giving us some of the most top quality graphics cards and processors, but apparently it will also give us the device that we’ve all been waiting for, a perfect mixture of a gaming handheld and a smartphone, something Sony failed to give us.

This handheld is codenamed Project Shield and its features have impressed me. It will have a Tegra 4 CPU, which is said to be the most powerful mobile CPU out there. It will come with the latest version of Android installed (4.2), which means we will have emulators, homebrews and everything the Google Store has to offer. The console will be able to stream games from PC (a GTX powered PC is needed) and will be compatible with most Steam games.

The console looks like a modified xbox controller with a 5-inch retina display attached to it. The console will feature HDMI, USB and microSD, stuff that Sony and Nintendo failed to provide.

In my opinion, the only downside to this console is its bulky size, but the controller scheme and the features make up for it.

I think this is the console we’ve all been waiting for, not a cheap chinese rip off, but a real high quality handheld console with Android installed.
What do you guys think? Will Project Shield wipe the floor with the Vita and 3DS? Will Sony learn from this and finally make the Vita more open? Will this be a success or a failure? Let me hear your thoughts.

Well, it does look intriguing and its specs are quite brow raising though, I highly doubt that it will prove to be a true competitor for the Vita or 3DS simply because of the practicality. The design is nice but would i really want to carry a controller around with me everywhere i go? Also, I fail to see how any apps other than games could successfully run on it (due to the obtuse shape and layout. If it is released at a similar price point as the Vita and 3DS I can almost guarantee it will be a flop. I would, however, be interested in testing it out as NVIDIA has made quite the strides in regards to Processing power and graphics. Will it be a success? I suppose only time will tell. ~Just One Guys Opinion~

I hope it succeeds. It’s lame you need a GTX 650 or higher. I have a 460 and don’t anticipate upgrading in the near / distant future. That’s the function I’d use the most; the local game streaming from controller-supported Steam games. The more of these things out there the better.

It’s lame you even need an Nvidia GPU to stream content. I’m sure they could make it work with AMD if they tried.

unless this thing can emulate the ps2 or gamecube it wont impress me. i can carry a vita around in my pocket no problem but i doubt im gonna wanna carry this and if i can only use this thing at home theres just no point since i can use my computer. im also interested to see battery life on this thing because i doubt it will be able to hold more than 3 hours of gaming.

    1. Asdfjuma’s avatar

PS2 emulation isn’t going to happen on ARM based architecture (90% of mobiles) for a long time if at all. From what I hear they would need to rewrite everything from the ground up as the PS2′s CPU handled shit differently or something. Only hope for seeing one in the near future is if we get something which is x86 based or similar and had A LOT more power.

Tbh, It sounds great, yet the design looks odd, a touch screen there!? I also haven’t particularly liked android such as smart phones, it feels bad, doesn’t look the best then again it might of felt bad because it was a much lower firmware of android, I mean the xperia play, felt terrible when I had it for a few days! The windows phone outmatched it even though at the time had less features.

Though battery life sounds good 5 to 10 hours right? I also know Nvidia, know have never purchased a GPU or fan etc from them. Wonder how much? However I’m content with PS vita, its awesome, but needs Skyrim ;)

Seems like a smartphone, minus the phone. Am I missing something?

Will this actually *natively* play anything better than smartpone games?

It mentions PC games, but it sounds like they don’t really play ON the phone, but just crappily stream off your PC.

I mean, it looks great for arcade emulators on the go, but without native console-quality titles this seems pfffft.

I want to add that powerful emu is the main thing I want in a portable console, but it needs games to compliment it or that goes stale.

I just wanted to clarify that.

Disign looks terrible. Mobile console need to be slim (pocket size). Since it is for android, price will be high. Nvidia earn their money from hardware, not from games. So probably we wil end up with expensive PC controller with almost no games.

android platform does not make it expensive (It’s open source and based of linux), there are plenty of little “Smart TV” adapters that are between $45 to $100 that are android based. now if was IOS based that might be a different story since Apple would want to charge them their first born to use their OS on the device.

a good example of cheap and high quality android devices would be the last three toys that came straight from google and manufactured by Samsung….. the Google Nexus 4(phone)/7/10 devices are well priced under most adroid devices (and dramatically under the iP(ad/hone/od) devices, but are the highest in specs and quality while running the latest version of Android.

The nexus devices are cheap because they are subsidized by google and/or selling at a loss. Not all companies can afford to do that, and this works only because google get their money back with advertising.
I agree with you however that Android does not add to the cost of the device, I don’t know where that comment from cold_hell is coming from

I think you find the concept of a new handheld by a new company in the console fray that you’re giving too much to this device. Truthfully it does intrigue me and take it from a guy who has bought every console shortly after launch for the past 5 years, I am curious, but as another person said above; I CANNOT see the practicality of carrying this with me and android for gaming can only take you so far. Give me ps2 emulation (hopefully a decent homebrew following/community) and I’ll give nvidia my money.

Hi :) I’ve heard about Tegara 4 SoC and this “console” some time ago. Idea is good, but design is worst even than Nintendo DS. First of all stupid thing is this controller – in this case it is portable device – controller compared to screen is very bad idea. It is not ergonomic, good is only that they plan to give HDMI out – in this case $ony makes me sick when they told us that Vita will not have HDMI out. OK another thing for tablets is that the life time of product is very short – good for them that the make 4-core A15 CPU – better that Nexus 10, but it will be very very expensive. And in the another nVidia’s idea will fall (handheld consoles) because they not developed thair own OS like Sony did. Android for developers of games isn’t good because there is no way to prevent piracy – even if thay develop great SDK for developers it will not show big tittles on this console. It is good for example Microsoft to get on handheld market – offcourse they must build their own OS, because use Android is stupides idea. So don’t worry about Vita it will be still good. Sorry for my chaotic post, but I am writeing it from scratch.

Something really good is here. It looks great, and the 5-inch screen just makes it better with you flipping it. But – how will the screen flip back down? xD But I think this will be the greatest handheld yet when released.

    1. makak1984’s avatar

Good i don’t think so… Look at the size of the controller compared to the screen it is not ergonomic, good only for play on tv – like normal controller on cable. Better idea is make console with all buttons and analogs on the side of the screen… this design that nVidia show is not ergonomic for handheld gameing – and so, And as I said before there is no way to play a unique games (exclusives) on this consoles because developers wanted to make games that will not be pirated few hours after release – in this case that is on Android. If nVidia develop our system and give SDK to developers that wanted to work with them good, but if based on Android – nope it is impossible.

I actually liked the design, not very portable but the shoulder buttons kinda make up for it.
But i’ve never been into smartphone platforms(i carry around a dumb phone and a console all the time). So i wonder how well this controller will integrate with the games. If this could somehow run OUYA games and fully use the controls on smartphone titles, i’d totally buy it.

i kinda like it. :) Finally a handheld adults can use !

I’ve owned a psp and 2 nintendo ds models in the last years and all ended up on ebay. One major reason i stopped caring about handhelds is their tiny size, making them uncomfortable for my hands (which are basically normal for an adult).
And touchscreen totally suck for video game playing, so please don’t mention that to me. :(

And as an adult, the last thing i could care about is if it’s gonna fit in my jean pockets… That thing belongs next to the sofa/bed and in a bagpack.
