VHBL: there’s light at the end of the tunnel
Yesterday I announced that Vita’s firmware 1.80 was blocking VHBL. Many talented devs heard my distress signal and started working on solutions. It’s been a long day, but I am now basically convinced that the VHBL release will happen on 1.80, it is just slightly postponed.
Some of you might have already seen that Neur0n (and others) figured out a way to install VHBL on firmware 1.80. As I mentioned yesterday, VHBL runs fine on 1.80, but copying it to the memory stick is the hard part.
Neur0n found a way to do it, but he was not the only one to find ways to copy our files to the Vita on the latest 1.80. Actually a large amount of people, known hackers or unknown members of our forums contacted me with solutions. I won’t name them all, but I want to thank all of you who have contacted me with ideas/solutions, it’s great to be part of such an active and helpful community 🙂
It turns out the changes in Firmware 1.80 were probably not an attempt at shutting VHBL down, rather than enforce stricter rules on file naming conventions for PSP savedata. These rules were already enforced on the PS3, and some of you might remember that it was not possible to install VHBL on the Vita from a PS3 because of these limitations. Funnily enough, I had already started working on taking these limitations into account for VHBL a while ago, but never really finished that because “I want to copy VHBL to my Vita from my PS3” was not such a huge use case.
Bottom line is, we freaked out yesterday over something that had probably nothing to do with us in the first place. To quote a nice conversation I had yesterday “you guys [hackers] often mistake a simple bug for a new security feature”, and I think this is what happened here.
So what’s next? Well, although I haven’t seen it by myself yet, I believe VHBL should be able to run and be installed on firmware 1.80 relatively easily, although there is of course some work to be done to get it compatible with these changes. I will get in touch with neur0n, and as far as I can tell for now, the VHBL release is a bit postponed, but not cancelled (I still need to confirm that with my own eyes, though!).
I will of course keep you updated once I have more info, stay tuned!

First 🙂
Awesome news 🙂
Good news :p
Great work!
Hey wololo will you make a ps vita program with which we can run psp apps without a game exploit.
seems impossible for now ..
how about that 2 minis games that we got for free ?
Wow that is Genius how come none of us ever thought of that. Maybe if you actually took a few minutes to read u would find out why.
you had me scard there :O
scard for life obviously.
AWESOME Love you Wololo, thanks for your continuing hard work.
Good work wololo and smarting ppl that help him, i would love to help you too wololo but i have no experience of hacking. however, if you have soemthing that anyone can help and dont need hacking experience, you are welcome to email me. thanks you again for doing this.

Hey wololo we need still follow the ninja release? Or u have another way?
Ok good bye, keep up this nice speedy work !
good to hear ^^
Yeah boy! that’s great!!!
And….a sigh of relief. Good job guys!
So, maybe now we can use a PS3 DEX to transfer it even after Sony remove it from PS Store. Cool!
This is great news! BUT! Do you think it would be smart to wait for Sony to fix firmware 1.80, seeing that everyone is complaining that not all PS1 titles are working!? I’m sure that a small patch should be in the works to fix it…. then release the VHBL title?
any who… Thanks for the update Wololo!
Do you mean that not all PS1 games are supported? If so, that will be added through the PS Store, they dont need to do a firmware update for this.
Good news 🙂 I would expect that the games will be pulled from the PS Store as before, but at least homebrew will still work for now.
hey.. i just wanna ask you guys.. is it possible for me to install vhbl? with my ps vita on 1.80 already?..
awesome!
Super News and great work !!! 🙂
Has anyone got youtube and direct video download to work again on the vita? Why is the fact that sony stopped the direct video downloads with the javascript not being discussed or at least a warning that updating to 1.80 blocks it? I think that should be front page news also as it effects many users. : o(
I wonder if they specifically affected the Youtube download or if its simply a “bug” from the browser update that happened in 1.80. Javascript is still supported afterall.
Wololo do you have any Idea how they blocked youtube video downloads? Will a fix ever be found or have they blocked all ways of downloading video directly on the browser?
Wololo do you have any Idea how they blocked youtube video downloads? Will a fix ever be found or have they blocked all ways of downloading video directly on the browser? Don’t you think the blocking of downloading video should be front page news also?
The YouTube downloaded works perfectly for me. I don’t understand what the problem is. I can directly download it from the browser and I can still watch it afterwards. It still works.
what did you do to make it work?.. teach me pls
How are you downloading and ware from?
I will make a video if you would like 😛

Thank you all for the work!
Good to here!
Can u please tell us how much the “VHBL Game” cost? So maybe it is the Last Chance for VHBL and i want it this Time!
No.
He already stated that he won’t do that.
I associate “light at the end of a tunnel” with death, so the post’s title scared me at first.
i can see the future, downloading homebrews from the ps vita’s web browser.
When do u gonne release it?
Keep up the nice work, bye!
You think Sony is going to release another fw to patch up links being opened to youtube? Cuz this doesnt seem to have copy n paste and youtube links goto youtube but tell me I need flash
and so hackers every where unite after the hack symbol was shined in the sky.
Thanks to Sony’s BS now we got hackers from everywhere with an even greater need to free this baby from the evil clutches of sony!
*** you very much Sony, let the homebrewers homebrew!
Hi,
I will say it in French: Merci beaucoup!!
🙂
Yay great work to everyone that contributed.
Good night everyone *sleep well move (hack) better*
Bye!
I love hombrews and would love to help you guys in the future. Wololo, or anyone, is there a guide on how to learn the basics of hacking and modding, from ameture level to a much more intermediate level? ill do the research myself Anywho. keep up the good work i admire all of you people! (Hackers)
If you look in the forums AcidSnake has a 3 part tutorial on how to learn to write homebrews for the psp. Which will in turn work as the same through vhbl. Hope that helps its what ive been doing. I want nothing more than to be able to contribute to the scene like so many others. On that note id like to thank wololo and the devs for their tireless devotion to the site and its users. I didnt update but was not worried because i know they wont eat, sleep, etc. Till their baby (VHBL) is realized for everyone. Thank you guys you rock!!!
