[PS3] Hard Drive Decryption Proof of Concept by naehrwert
I haven’t tested it yet (or even tried to compile it), but I’m posting this because I believe this could lead to a bunch of good things. Naehrwert just twitted that he is able to decrypt the content of the PS3 Hard Drive, and posted basically all the required code to do it.
The code, at a quick glance, requires you to have access to your eid root key (this should not be too difficult given that there are lots of tools to do it, such as eeid_rkdumper), and a list of sectors (of your hard drive, I assume), which might be retrievable with standard tools?
As usual, I’m sure that noob friendly tools will come up soon enough, if that turns out to be as interesting as I think it is.

I’ve been wondering if there’d ever be any merit to anyone trying to gain any more access to the Vita from the PS3 side, maybe this paired with the higher firmware DEX cfws available will answer that.
Though I guess it’d be the same as trying to go through the PC, huh, which is completely useless as of now. Maybe they did something dumb like store the Vita keys in a secure sector of the ps3 :p
Sweet, reminds me of graf_chokolo’s decryption patch. If you patched the firmware and reformatted the PS3s harddrive, it would run with a decrypted harddrive.
Maaaaaan, if this leads to me being able to back up my files from my PS3 without needing the file manager..I’ll be so happy.._. I already got a USB sata connector thingum, so really..if this leads to something like that, with no ill effects on the copy protection thing it uses for some save files, I’m gonna cry tears of joy. It’s really dumb that it makes you delete your HD when you swap drives, i lost many a good savegame when my first 60gb bricked from waninkoko. =/
Yeah, this stuff is brilliant, I have my YLODed 40GB completely torn down and I wanted to bring it back to life only to backup my saves, because I need a working PS3. Now this should be doable with just a USB to SATA connector! Bring on the GUI version of this stuff and I’ll be really happy!
In order to decrypt your HDD you need your console working to obtain its unique keys. So, no you can’t use this method to salvage your data.
