VHBL upcoming release: more homebrew test results

Many of you are wondering if the upcoming release of VHBL will be worth your attention. Should you stay on 1.61 or 1.67 if you are running one of the previous exploits? Should you not even bother buy the exploited game if your favorite homebrew is not running? Our beta tester (thanks for your help!) came back to me with a few results that I’m sharing here.

Please note that the version he is testing with is not the final one, although from what I could see, the compatibility results are quite definitive. HBL has been very stable for a few months now, and improving compatibility would be difficult without some major breakthrough regarding syscalls.

Anyways, sorry for the boring technical details, below is the report from our tester. Remember that my own tests of this upcoming version of VHBL can also be found here, with additional homebrews. Our tester is using the US version, but we believe compatibility should be the same across all versions.

Homebrews/Apps that work

  • Quake 1 Arena (from time to time framedrops but very enjoyable on the Vita)

Quake 1 Arena

Jelly car

Spider solitaire

  • MVS (a little bit slower than the CFW version but still pleasant to play)
  • uo_SNES9x 0.02y32(kinda of slow from time to time)
  • Picodrive (As always picodrive runs with sound and savestates)

Picodrive

  • CPS1 (Perfect but the menu combo is a Start+Select+R which is hard to hit on the Vita :D)
  • gpsp (works with savestates)
  • NesterJ (works with savestates)
  • Final Burn Alpha v12p1ALL (works with savestates)

Final burn alpha

  • PSPFiler (Not quiting properly for some reason )
  • yMenu ( this menu is really nice :D )

Homebrews/Apps that don’t work

  • Thing Thing (Most probably would work but for some reason it does not find its files )
  • pspkvm (Not sure what is the right version for VHBL but I tried several with no luck)
  • SNES9xTYL 0.4.2 (As I already mentioned in my previous tests)
  • Ragdoll Cannon
  • PSPLBreakout
  • Lua games in general

Not bad, hu? Snes9xTYL not working is a let down, but uo_snes9x is a very good alternative that will satisfy your emulation needs, from what I could see. Thanks again to our beta tester. Remember, for more results you can also check my previous tests.

Wololo, do you tried to use the version of PSP Filer 6.6 which ive offered as one which should be able to work with the Vita HBL? I am talking about this version:

Well, I guess there is a little chance that some other version of SNES9xTYL will work.
Anyway, definitely I will use this release if I won’t miss it.

Regarding the comment on Tetriabetes, to clarify, that is a homebrew running in vhbl, but it detects music saved in the Vita space? That sounds very interesting.

Yeah I tried it on SC3 VHBL and it was playing my music. You can even change songs while playing by pressing R.

It’s nothing special; the Vita’s music/pictures folders are just available to the PSP emulator as the PSP music/pictures folders. I saved a screenshot of Cladun with its own ingame screenshot function and it showed up in the Vita photos area.

But this means that we can use the PSP sandbox for at least reading files that are stored outside the sandbox itself which is rather interesting

wololo, nice work always. A question, what emu MAME works in the new VHBL?

    Thanks

    Reply

    1. dimy93’s avatar

You don’t really need MAME emulator on VHBL
the FBA supports (on my opinion) more MAME games than the exsisting PSP mame emulators and also the MVS and CPS1 support many of the most played mame games ever(though they support small amount of games they are all high quality)
I’ll suggest to find the games you want from mame and check the compatibility list of the 3 already mentioned

I had VHBL on 1.67 and updated my FW for the remote desktop app. I hate myself more and more each day for that stupid decision. Hoping this new version is better!

Gamescom is coming very soon so VHBL release is coming closer as the 1.80 is expected few days after it. I guess that now is the right time for testing the compatibility.

Always have trusted Nintendo. People use emulators just to play Nintendo games. I wonder if Sony hates VHBL cause its a shot to the balls for every time a kid plays Mario Bro on the Vita.

It’s a mod of snes9xtyl that was made in the old advancedpsp day by a user named thorwak specifically to overcome an issue with hbl. If it doesn’t work maybe you can contact him for help compiling since he was able to do it before. He is on /talk but not online since june, but that’s not all that long ago so maybe you can drop him an email or something.

No se ha podido, la única forma sería llamar a at&t y pedirles que lo hagan, tal vez explicándoles tu problema te lo desbloqueen. Otra forma sería decirles que no conoces la marca del móvil (le dices que es un móvil viejo y no conoces la marca).
